co-leaders heading into the second round of the Masters at Augusta
National after they fired 7-under-par 65s yesterday, two shots
ahead of K.J. Choi and Yon-Eun Yang. Matt Kuchar (KOO'-chur) and
Ricky Barnes opened with 68s, and Sergio Garcia and Geoff Ogilvy
are among seven players who shot 69s yesterday. Defending champion
and three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson finds himself five
shots back through 18 holes, while Tiger Woods is at minus-1.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - More than three years after Barry Bonds was
first indicted, his federal trial is now in the hands of the jury.
Bonds' lawyers and federal prosecutors spent several hours
yesterday delivering their closing arguments to the jury of eight
women and four men. The record-setting baseball star is charged
with three counts of lying to a grand jury in December 2003, and
one count of obstructing that jury's investigation of sports
doping.
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox will be looking for their first
win of the season when they play their home opener against the New
York Yankees this afternoon. The Bosox were 1-0 losers at Cleveland
yesterday, thanks to Asdrubal Cabrera's suicide squeeze in the
bottom of the eighth. It's the first time since 1945 the Red Sox
have begun a season with six straight losses.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Kansas is losing a pair of its best
basketball players a year early. Marcus and Markieff (mahr-KEEF')
Morris have announced they are leaving the Jayhawks to enter this
summer's NBA draft. The twins led the Jayhawks in scoring,
rebounding and blocks last season.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - It will be the Minnesota Duluth against
Michigan on Saturday for the NCAA hockey championship after both
teams won on Thursday. Minnesota Duluth advanced to the title game
for the second time as J.T. Brown had a goal and an assist in a 4-3
triumph against Notre Dame. Ben Winnett scored in the first period
and Kevin Hunwick made 40 saves to lead the Wolverines' 2-0 shutout
of North Dakota.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - After making up ground on Western Conference leader San Antonio with a nine-game winning streak, the Lakers have backtracked by losing two straight while the Spurs were winning two in a row. Visiting Utah snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating Los Angeles 86-85 after the Spurs had posted a 97-90 road win against Atlanta. L.A. trails San Antonio by 3 1/2 games with five games left.
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - You can understand a little letdown after clinching the Presidents' Trophy for the league's top record, and that's just what's happened to the Canucks. Last-place Edmonton beat Vancouver 4-1 for their second straight win over the first-place club. The Canucks have lost consecutive games after winning 12 of 13 to clinch home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
CLEVELAND (AP) - Predicted by many to win the AL East, the Red Sox are off to their worst start since opening 0-6 in 1996. Boston is 0-4 after a 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
LONDON (AP) - After previously turning down women's ski jumping for the 2010 Vancouver Games, Olympic officials tell The Associated Press that the event is one of five that have been approved for inclusion in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi (SOH'-chee). Ski halfpipe, mixed relay in biathlon, and team events in luge and figure skating are the others. Slopestyle events in snowboard and freestyle skiing and a team Alpine skiing event were put on hold.
