Philadelphia in the first game since the Cards lost All-Star first
baseman Albert Pujols (POO'-hohlz) for up to six weeks with a
broken forearm.
MIAMI (AP) - At 80 years old, Jack McKeon still knows how to

losing streak by beating the L.A. Angels 5-2 to give McKeon his
first victory as interim manager as the Angels went 1-for-15 with
runners in scoring position.
CHICAGO (AP) - Paul Konerko will try to hit a home run in his

Cubs last night.
UNDATED (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') and

would net the players just under 50 percent of the NFL's total
revenue.
NEW YORK (AP) - NBA owners and players swapped proposals during
a three and a-half hour session yesterday and more talks are
scheduled for Friday. NBA Commissioner David Stern is backing a
"flex cap" system proposed by the owners, but the players insists

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

KWBG Sports for June 21st

collective bargaining agreement. This is the first meeting called
by the league strictly for labor matters since the lockout began
nearly four months ago.
WASHINGTON (AP) - A group of NFL Hall of Famers is ratcheting up
the pressure on the owners by backing a class-action lawsuit
against the NFL, demanding better benefits for former players.
Former Vikings great Carl Eller, Lem Barney, Elvin Bethea, Paul
Krause and Joe DeLamielleure (deh-lah-meh-LOOR') were among the
former stars claiming the NFL has not done what is "fair and
right" in supporting the financial and medical concerns of former
players.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals, locked in a dogfight
with Milwaukee for the National League Central lead, are preparing
to do without three-time MVP first baseman Albert Pujols

outfielder Lance Berkman to first base while the 31-year-old Pujols
recovers from a fractured wrist suffered Sunday.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Marlins changed managers
but little else. In 80-year-old Jack McKeon's first game as interim
manager taking over for Edwin Rodriguez, the Marlins lost 2-1 to
the L.A. Angels for their 11th straight loss, dropping Florida to
1-19 in June.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - There doesn't seem to be any end to the messy
divorce of L.A. Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his ex-wife Jamie.
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig (SEE'-lihg) has rejected a proposed
television deal between the Dodgers and Fox that voids a recent
proposed divorce settlement because the deal diverts team assets to
what Selig calls McCourt's "personal needs."

WIMBLEDON (AP) - A day after the second golf major of the year
ended, the third tennis Grand Slam of the season is under way.

victory on the grass at the All England Club.
MIAMI (AP) - The Florida Marlins manager situation remains up in

lead Masters champ Charl Schwartzel and Y.E. Yang by three.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Wild have called a news
conference today at which they are expected to name Mike Yeo (yoh)

first NHL head coaching job.
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox are proving to be very
neighborly to the new Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, who
captured their first NHL title in 39 years on Wednesday night in
Vancouver. The Red Sox moved their scheduled game Saturday to a
night game so that fans would be able to attend the victory parade
for the Bruins in the daytime.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - On the field, the Boston Red Sox are
one of the hottest teams in baseball, having just completed an 8-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies own the best
record in baseball - 43-26 - following their doubleheader sweep of

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Vancouver will be without

into the board by Boston's Johnny Boychuk in Game 6 Monday.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Jozy Altidore (JOH'-see AL'-tih-dor)
rocket into the top of the net in the ninth minute was all the

first-place finishes in group play.
NEW YORK (AP) - Progress has been reported in the NFL labor
dispute with both sides getting together for talks at an

KWBG Sports for June 14th

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins chased Roberto Luongo
(loh-AHN'-goh) while scoring four times over a 4:14 span in the
first 10 minutes of a 5-2 win over Vancouver, evening the Stanley
Cup finals at three games apiece. Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic
(LOO'-chihch) began the offensive barrage by scoring 35 seconds
apart early in the opening period. The series concludes tomorrow
night in Vancouver, where the Bruins have scored just twice in
three games.
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi says he

Texas Rangers. Jeter collected his 2,994th hit with a first-inning
single but had to leave the game in the fifth with a strained right
calf.
NEW YORK (AP) - Plaxico Burress will work with the National
Urban League and Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence after
spending nearly two years in prison on a weapon possession charge.
The 33-year-old former New York Giants receiver said Monday he
would be mentored by Magic Johnson and Tony Dungy (DUHN'-jee)
through the Brady Center. He'll volunteer with Urban League youth
programs and recruit other pro athletes.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kyle Busch has been docked six points and
his crew chief fined $25,000 because his car failed post-race
inspection at Pocono Raceway. The No. 18 Toyota was found to be too
low after finishing third in Sunday's Sprint Cup race. Despite the
penalty, he remains fifth in the standings, but he now trails
leader Carl Edwards by 31 points.
PHOENIX (AP) - The Fiesta Bowl has hired University of Arizona
President Robert Shelton as its new executive director, replacing
the ousted John Junker. Shelton is a member of the presidential

KWBG Sports for June 13th

MIAMI (AP) - Jason Terry scored 19 points and the Dallas
Mavericks led the Miami Heat 53-51 at halftime of Game 6 of the NBA
finals, putting the Mavs two quarters from their first
championship.
With Dallas leading the series 3-2, the teams returned to Miami
and put on quite a show. They traded big runs, traded the lead
several times and even traded shoves during a timeout midway
through the second quarter.
Terry made 8 of 10 shots, helping make up for Dirk Nowitzki
going 1 of 12. He couldn't get anything to fall from anywhere on
the court and had only three points.
LeBron James led Miami with 11 points and Dwyane Wade and Chris
Bosh each had nine.

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) - Brad Adamonis has earned the final spot in
the U.S. Open at Congressional and will be playing in his first
major.
The U.S. Open held back three spots in the 156-man field in case
players qualified in the past week by either moving into the top 50
in the world ranking or becoming a multiple PGA Tour winner of the
past year.
Gary Woodland, who secured his spot in the top 50 with his
sixth-place finish at the Memorial two weeks ago, was at No. 40 in
the ranking published Monday.
Two other spots were awarded to alternates - Zack Byrd from the
New Jersey sectional qualifier Sunday night, and Adamonis from
Maryland qualified Monday morning.
The U.S. Open starts Thursday with Graeme McDowell as the
defending champion.

CHICAGO (AP) - A Cuban player has defected during CONCACAF's
Gold Cup tournament, leaving the team hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
In an interview aired Sunday on Univision, Yosniel Mesa says he
decided before the tournament to defect. Mesa says the decision was
difficult, but the 30-year-old wants to play professionally and
that's not possible in Cuba.
Cuba played Mexico in Charlotte on Thursday night, losing 5-0.
After the game, Mesa says he climbed down a fire escape ladder and
ran to a car where family members were waiting. Mesa was listed as
"injured" on Cuba's roster for Sunday's 6-1 loss to El Salvador
in Chicago. The team left Soldier Field immediately after the game,
with coach Raul Gonzalez skipping the customary postgame news
conference.
CONCACAF spokesman Ben Spencer declined comment.

NEW YORK (AP) - The 3,000 Hit Club is an elite group of
baseball's greats. Musial. Ripken. Cobb. Mays. Not one of the 27,
though, joined while wearing a Yankees uniform.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig never did it. Neither did Joe DiMaggio
or Mickey Mantle. Same for Bernie Williams and Don Mattingly.
There's an All-Star roll call of Yankees who came up short for
reasons that include illness, injury, wartime service and, frankly,
not being wanted any longer in win-now New York.
No. 2 from Kalamazoo is about to change that.
Sometime in the next week or so, Derek Jeter will perhaps send
another liner to right field to reach the magic number.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) - Jeff Gordon led most of the final 40 laps
and won for the second time this season, taking the checkered flag
at Pocono Raceway for a fifth time Sunday.
Gordon won in February at Phoenix International Raceway and has
multiple victories in a season for the first time since 2007.
Gordon tied Bill Elliott with five wins on the 2 1/2-mile triangle
track.
Gordon's victory at Phoenix ended his drought at 66 races
without a win. This 11-race winless stretch was just a blip
compared to that.
Pole sitter Kurt Busch was second and Kyle Busch third. Jimmie
Johnson and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five. Dale Earnhardt
Jr. continued his rebirth with a sixth-place finish. It capped a
great day for Hendrick Motorsports - first, fourth and sixth.

their first NBA title. The Mavs got 29 points from Dirk Nowitzki
(noh-VIHT'-skee) and Jason Terry contributed 21 off the bench in
beating Miami 112-103 to take a 3-2 series lead in the NBA Finals.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - After losing two lopsided
games in Boston by a combined score of 12-1, the Vancouver Canucks
are back home for Game 5 tonight against the resurgent Bruins in a
series tied 2-2. The Canucks are hoping for steadier goaltending
from Roberto Luongo, who was yanked after allowing four goals
Wednesday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies' lead in the
National League East has dwindled to two games over Atlanta. The
Phils dropped a 4-3 decision to the Chicago Cubs in 11 innings
while Atlanta handed the Florida Marlins their ninth straight loss,
3-2.
CHICAGO (AP) - Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko each hit two-run
homers and the Chicago White Sox spoiled the debut of Oakland
interim manager Bob Melvin by beating the Athletics 9-4 last night.
Melvin replaced Bob Geren (GEHR'-ehn) earlier in the day, but the
change couldn't keep Oakland from its 10th straight defeat.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Scottsdale police say Arizona
Diamondbacks television announcer and former major leaguer Mark
Grace was arrested on Memorial Day on suspicion of driving under
the influence of alcohol. A Diamondbacks spokesman says the team
had no comment on Grace's arrest, calling it a "pending legal
matter."

BOSTON (AP) - Tim Thomas turned back all 38 shots and the
Stanley Cup final is heading back to Vancouver for Friday night's
Game 5 all tied at two games apiece after the Boston Bruins' 4-0
victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night. Rich Peverley scored
twice for the Bruins, who have scored 12 goals in their two
victories on home ice.
DALLAS (AP) - Tonight's pivotal Game 5 of the NBA Finals has the
Dallas Mavericks hosting the Miami Heat with the winner taking a
3-2 series lead. With only two or three games left this postseason,
Mavs star forward Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT'-skee) says he'll have
plenty of time in the offseason to deal with a sinus infection and
everything else that ails him and fully expects to play tonight.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired
the negotiating rights to Terrelle (tur-REHL') Pryor and are
interested in bringing the former Ohio State quarterback to the
Canadian Football League. The 6-foot-6, 233-pound Pryor has given
up his senior season with the Buckeyes in the wake of an NCAA
investigation into the Ohio State program.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Don't think that Oklahoma, which was beaten
convincingly by Southern California in the 2005 Orange Bowl that
decided the national title, will be laying claim to that crown.
Sooners coach Bob Stoops says the Sooners "aren't claiming any
championships" since USC was stripped of the title for NCAA rules
infractions.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels won his eighth game while
striking out nine in eight dominant innings in the Philadelphia
Phillies 2-0 win over the L.A. Dodgers. Hamels is 6-0 lifetime
against the Dodgers, including three wins in the postseason.

KWBG Sports for June 8th

DALLAS (AP) - The NBA Finals are tied at two games apiece after
Dirk Nowitzki scored 10 of his 21 points to fuel a fourth-quarter
comeback in the Dallas Mavericks' 86-83 win over the Miami Heat.
Nowitzki battled the flu and shot just 6-for-19 from the field, but
he also grabbed 11 rebounds and hit a huge layup with 14.4 seconds
left to put the Mavs up 84-81. LeBron James scored just eight
points on 3-of-11 shooting for the Heat, who also received a
game-high 32 points from Dwyane (dwayn) Wade.
BOSTON (AP) - Ray Allen has exercised his option to remain with
the Boston Celtics next season, keeping the team's Big Three of
Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett together for one more year.
Allen became the NBA's all-time leader in three-pointers this
season and averaged 16.5 points and 49 percent shooting. Garnett
has one year left on his contract and Pierce has three years
remaining.
BOSTON (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks will finish the Stanley Cup
finals without defenseman Aaron Rome, who received a four-game
suspension for his hit on Boston's Nathan Horton during Game 3
Monday night. The hit left Horton with a severe concussion that
will prevent him from playing the rest of the series. Game 4 is
tonight in Boston.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Quarterback Terrelle Pryor will likely
enter the NFL supplemental draft after announcing through his
attorney that he won't play for Ohio State this season. Pryor had
already been suspended for the first five games for breaking NCAA
rules by accepting improper benefits from the owner of a tattoo
parlor. ESPN is also reporting that a former friend of Pryor's

UNDATED (AP) - The 2004 Bowl Championship Series championship is
now vacant after Southern California was stripped of the crown
yesterday. The BCS waited to make a decision on the championship
until USC appealed the NCAA sanctions, which included a two-year

seasons. The NCAA ruled that star tailback Reggie Bush received
improper extra benefits during those seasons and was ineligible
when he played.
ROME, N.Y. (AP) - The agent for Plaxico Burress (PLEK'-sih-koh
BUR'-ihs) says the wide receiver hopes to return to the NFL again

draft. Seattle chose Virginia junior lefty Danny Hultzen with the
second selection, and UCLA hurler Trevor Bauer went third overall
to Arizona.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks will
