MIAMI (AP) - Jason Terry scored 19 points and the Dallas
Mavericks led the Miami Heat 53-51 at halftime of Game 6 of the NBA
finals, putting the Mavs two quarters from their first
championship.
With Dallas leading the series 3-2, the teams returned to Miami
and put on quite a show. They traded big runs, traded the lead
several times and even traded shoves during a timeout midway
through the second quarter.
Terry made 8 of 10 shots, helping make up for Dirk Nowitzki
going 1 of 12. He couldn't get anything to fall from anywhere on
the court and had only three points.
LeBron James led Miami with 11 points and Dwyane Wade and Chris
Bosh each had nine.
BETHESDA, Md. (AP) - Brad Adamonis has earned the final spot in
the U.S. Open at Congressional and will be playing in his first
major.
The U.S. Open held back three spots in the 156-man field in case
players qualified in the past week by either moving into the top 50
in the world ranking or becoming a multiple PGA Tour winner of the
past year.
Gary Woodland, who secured his spot in the top 50 with his
sixth-place finish at the Memorial two weeks ago, was at No. 40 in
the ranking published Monday.
Two other spots were awarded to alternates - Zack Byrd from the
New Jersey sectional qualifier Sunday night, and Adamonis from
Maryland qualified Monday morning.
The U.S. Open starts Thursday with Graeme McDowell as the
defending champion.
CHICAGO (AP) - A Cuban player has defected during CONCACAF's
Gold Cup tournament, leaving the team hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
In an interview aired Sunday on Univision, Yosniel Mesa says he
decided before the tournament to defect. Mesa says the decision was
difficult, but the 30-year-old wants to play professionally and
that's not possible in Cuba.
Cuba played Mexico in Charlotte on Thursday night, losing 5-0.
After the game, Mesa says he climbed down a fire escape ladder and
ran to a car where family members were waiting. Mesa was listed as
"injured" on Cuba's roster for Sunday's 6-1 loss to El Salvador
in Chicago. The team left Soldier Field immediately after the game,
with coach Raul Gonzalez skipping the customary postgame news
conference.
CONCACAF spokesman Ben Spencer declined comment.
NEW YORK (AP) - The 3,000 Hit Club is an elite group of
baseball's greats. Musial. Ripken. Cobb. Mays. Not one of the 27,
though, joined while wearing a Yankees uniform.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig never did it. Neither did Joe DiMaggio
or Mickey Mantle. Same for Bernie Williams and Don Mattingly.
There's an All-Star roll call of Yankees who came up short for
reasons that include illness, injury, wartime service and, frankly,
not being wanted any longer in win-now New York.
No. 2 from Kalamazoo is about to change that.
Sometime in the next week or so, Derek Jeter will perhaps send
another liner to right field to reach the magic number.
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) - Jeff Gordon led most of the final 40 laps
and won for the second time this season, taking the checkered flag
at Pocono Raceway for a fifth time Sunday.
Gordon won in February at Phoenix International Raceway and has
multiple victories in a season for the first time since 2007.
Gordon tied Bill Elliott with five wins on the 2 1/2-mile triangle
track.
Gordon's victory at Phoenix ended his drought at 66 races
without a win. This 11-race winless stretch was just a blip
compared to that.
Pole sitter Kurt Busch was second and Kyle Busch third. Jimmie
Johnson and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five. Dale Earnhardt
Jr. continued his rebirth with a sixth-place finish. It capped a
great day for Hendrick Motorsports - first, fourth and sixth.
