NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Kyrie
(KY'-ree) Irving, a point guard who played just 11 college games at
Duke because of injuries, with the No. 1 pick in an NBA draft that
quickly became filled with international players. Three of the
first six players taken were from Europe.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The Sacramento Kings traded up to obtain the
rights to AP college player of the year, high-scoring BYU guard
Jimmer Fredette (freh-DEHT'). Fredette was the leading scorer in
college last season, pouring in 28.9 points a game in his year with
the Cougars.
CHICAGO (AP) - Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzo is expected to
name bench coach John McLaren to serve as a short-term manager by
the time the team takes the field for tonight's interleague game
against the Chicago White Sox. Jim Riggleman stunned the baseball
world by resigning over a contract dispute as manager of the
Nationals, who've won 11 of 12.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - In an effort to clear enough salary cap
space so they can go after goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov (IHL'-yuh
brihs-GAH'-lahf), the Philadelphia Flyers have traded top
goal-scorer Jeff Carter to the Blue Jackets for forward Jake
Voracek (VOHR'-rah-chehk) and two draft picks. The Flyers also sent
team captain Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings for forwards
Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds and a draft choice.
UNDATED (AP) - NFL owners and players met for a second straight
day outside of Boston as they try and close in on a new collective
bargaining agreement. The two sides probably will meet against next
week.
