their return to prime time, riding their top-ranked run defense to
beat ailing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lihs-bur-gur)
and the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 last night. The nationally
televised game was delayed twice by power outages at Candlestick
Park.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Nik Cochran scored 21 points, including
a clutch 3-pointer in the closing minutes, and Davidson shocked No.
12 Kansas 80-74 last night in Top-25 college basketball action.
That gives Davidson a little bit of revenge over an NCAA tournament
loss three years ago.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Dexter Strickland scored 14 points to
help No. 5 North Carolina overwhelm Nicholls State 99-49. The Tar
Heels enjoyed a 72-35 rebounding advantage and those 72 rebounds
tied for the second-most in North Carolina history.
BOSTON (AP) - On NHL ice, David Krejci (KRAY'-chee) scored off
his skate to break a second-period tie, and Tim Thomas stopped 33
shots to lead the Bruins to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal
Canadiens. That's the fifth consecutive win for the defending
Stanley Cup champions.
NEW YORK (AP) - The two-time AL champion Texas Rangers are the
big winners in the Yu Darvish (yoo DAHR'-vihsh) sweepstakes. Major
League Baseball says the Rangers have won the rights from Darvish's
Japanese League team and now have 30 days to negotiate a contract
with the 6-foor-5 pitcher who has been clocked with about a 98 mph
fastball.
