BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag inthe Carmax 400 NASCAR race yesterday. In doing so, he clinched aspot in NASCAR's Chase for the Championship. The victory was histhird of the season.

ATLANTA (AP) - Right-hander Kris Medlen of the Atlanta Bravesfaces season-ending elbow ligament-replacement surgery thisWednesday. Best known as Tommy John surgery, the procedure meansMedlen will need a year to rehab the arm. He was the Braves' No. 5starter with a 6-2 record and an ERA of 3.68.

HOUSTON (AP) - Running back Ben Tate of the Houston Texans willneed surgery after suffering what coach Gary Kubiak (KOO'-bee-ak)calls a "pretty severe" ankle injury. Tate suffered the injury inthe club's preseason opener in Arizona two days ago.

UNDATED (AP) - The weekend's big winners in tennis were AndyMurray and Kim Clijsters (KLYS'-turz). Murray beat Roger Federer7-5, 7-5 to defend his Rogers Cup title in Toronto, while Clijstersrallied for 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory over Maria Sharapova(shah-rah-POH'-vah) in the Cincinnati Women's Open final.
