WASHINGTON (AP) - Roger Clemens has entered a not guilty plea to
charges of lying to Congress about whether he used steroids or
human growth hormone. He was arraigned on three counts of making
false statements, two counts of perjury and one count of
obstruction of Congress. The Rocket could face up to 30 years in
prison and a $1.5 million fine if convicted, although he'd likely
face no more than 15 to 21 months under U.S. sentencing guidelines.
CLEVELAND (AP) - Manny Ramirez is back in the American League,
claimed by the Chicago White Sox off waivers from the Los Angeles
Dodgers. The 38-year-old Ramirez hit .311 with eight homers and 40
RBIs in 66 games with L.A. this season, missing 33 games this
summer with a right calf strain. He's a lifetime .313 hitter with
554 home runs and 1,828 RBI in a major league career that began
with the 1993 Cleveland Indians.
NEW YORK (AP) - Roger Federer has cruised into the second round
of the U.S. Open with a straight-sets victory over Brian Dubal
after Andy Roddick and Robin Soderling won their first-round
matches. Defending women's champ Kim Clijsters (KLYS'-turz) and
Venus Williams reached Round 2 with straight-sets victories.
ISTANBUL (AP) - The U.S. men's basketball team is 3-0 at the
World Championships after pulling out a 70-68 win over Brazil. The
U.S. took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter and
survived a a potential game-tying shot by Leandro Barbosa that
rattled out at the buzzer. Kevin Durant led the U.S. with 27
points, while Chauncey Billups added 15 in 31 minutes.
CHICAGO (AP) - U.S. men's soccer coach Bob Bradley has accepted
a four-year contract extension through the 2014 World Cup. Bradley
is 38-20-8 over the last four years, including a victory over
then-No. 1 Spain at last year's Confederations Cup. The Americans
reached the second round at this year's World Cup in South Africa
before losing to Ghana.
