ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers go for a four-game
sweep of Minnesota tonight, sending out 10-game winner Cliff Lee
against Francisco Liriano of the Twins. Last night, the Rangers got
home runs from Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero in beating the
Twins 4-3 to open an eight-and-a-half game lead over Oakland in the
AL West.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates had lost 13 of 15 games
before beating the St. Louis Cardinals the past two nights. The
latest loss was a damaging 5-2 defeat that dropped the Cards
three-and-a-half games back of Cincinnati in the NL Central.
UNDATED (AP) - There were two wild games in the National League
yesterday. The Cincinnati Reds blew a nine-run lead, then regrouped
and rallied past the San Francisco Giants 12-11 on Joey Votto's
tiebreaking single in the 12th inning and Colorado overcame a 10-1
deficit and beat Atlanta 12-10.
UNDATED (AP) - The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays remain
tied atop the AL East as both teams lost yesterday. Toronto dumped
the Yanks 6-3 while the Angels routed the Rays 12-3 behind a 17-hit
attack.
ATLANTA (AP) - NFL owners are eager to increase the regular
season from 16 to 18 games in the 2012 season, but the players
aren't nearly as sold on the idea. During an owners meeting
yesterday, Patriots owner Bob Kraft called the 18-game season a
"win-win all around," but several players said they would expect
a bigger chunk of the NFL's multibillion-dollar revenue pie.
