CHICAGO (AP) - Lou Piniella (pihn-EHL'-uh) retired from his job
as Cubs manager after yesterday's game in Chicago, allowing him to
go home to Florida to be with his ailing mother. The 66-year-old
Piniella had been involved in baseball, first as a player and then
as a manager, for 48 years.
UNDATED (AP) - Defending National League champion Philadelphia
blanked Washington 6-zip and remains 2 1/2 games behind the
East-leading Atlanta Braves, who pummeled the Cubs 16-5. The
Phillies are two games ahead of St. Louis and San Francisco in the
wild-card hunt following the Cardinals' 9-0 win over the Giants.

New York Yankees bulldozed Seattle 10-0 and remains a game up on

MADRID (AP) - Spain will be without one of its key players at
the upcoming world championships. Jose Manuel Calderon, who plays
for the NBA's Toronto Raptors, tore a muscle in his left leg in
Sunday's 86-85 exhibition loss to the U.S. The 28-year-old point
guard was part of Spain's 2006 world champion team and won Olympic
silver two years ago in Beijing.
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - A Monday qualifier won a PGA Tour event
for the first time in 24 years. Thirty-seven-year-old Arjun Atwal
of India posted a one-shot victory at the Wyndham Championship for
his first Tour title. David Toms was the runner-up.
