TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram will
miss Alabama's season opener against San Jose State Saturday after
injuring his left knee during practice. Coach Nick Saban said in a
statement that the star tailback had an arthroscopic procedure
Tuesday and should make a full recovery in a "relatively short
time."

UNDATED (AP) - Minnesota wide receiver Sidney Rice will be
ineligible to play in the first six games of the regular season
after being put on the physically unable to perform list following
hip surgery last week. He's expected to need at least two months of
recovery.

MIAMI (AP) - Washington Nationals rookie ace Stephen Strasburg
will have Tommy John surgery on Friday to rebuild his injured right
elbow. Strasburg tore a ligament while pitching Aug. 21 in
Philadelphia after going 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in
68 innings.

NEW YORK (AP) - Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki
(vohz-nee-AK'-ee) were straight-sets winners in the first round of
the U.S. Open yesterday. Other winners on the men's side include
Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) Mardy Fish and James Blake.
Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic (yeh-LAY'-nuh YANK'-oh-vihch) and
Svetlana Kuznetsova (sveht-LAH'-nah kooz-NET'-soh-vah) advanced on
the women's side, but No. 8 Li Na was the highest seed to fall
yesterday.

PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU says it will go independent in football
while joining the West Coast Conference in all other sports in the
2011-2012 school year. The Cougars had an agreement to join the
Western Athletic Conference in everything but football earlier this
month, but that fell apart when the Mountain West Conference
invited Nevada and Fresno State to leave the WAC for the MWC.
