MILWAUKEE (AP) - All-time career saves leader Trevor Hoffman
earned his 600th save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning in the
Milwaukee Brewers' 4-2 win over St. Louis. Before a roaring crowd
at Miller Park, the 42-year-old Hoffman got a double play and a
groundout in the ninth before being mobbed by his teammates and
family after the historic save.
PHOENIX (AP) - Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) struck out 11, three
San Francisco players homered and the Giants beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks 6-3 to keep up the pressure on San Diego in the NL
West. The Padres remained one game ahead of the Giants by nipping
the L.A. Dodgers 2-1.
UNDATED (AP) - There's a new leader in the National League East
where the two-time defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies have
overtaken the Atlanta Braves by a half-game. The Phils held off
Florida 8-7 while the Braves were dropping a 5-0 decision to the
last-place Pittsburgh Pirates.
MIAMI (AP) - Bill Parcells is turning over control of the Miami
Dolphins to general manager Jeff Ireland but will retain a role as
a daily consultant. The Dolphins say the change is part of a
long-range plan put in place when the Parcells regime took over at
the end of the 2007 season.
NEW YORK (AP) - U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin says picking
world No. 1-ranked Tiger Woods as one of his four captain's picks
for the Ryder Cup in three weeks was a no-brainer. Pavin also chose
a pair of major champions, Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson, and
21-year-old Rickie Fowler, who will be the youngest American Ryder
Cup player since Woods in 1997.
