KWBG Sports for September 3rd

HONOLULU (AP) - The Lane Kiffin coaching era at Southern
California opened with the 14th-ranked Trojans posting a
high-scoring 49-36 victory at Hawaii last night. Trojans QB Matt
Barkley completed 18 of 23 passes for 257 yards and five
touchdowns, including four in the first half.

ATLANTA (AP) - Parris Lee scored the first touchdown in Georgia
State history, Drew Little threw a pair of scoring passes and the
Panthers won their inaugural game by beating Shorter 41-7 before
30,237 at the Georgia Dome last night. The game marked the return
to coaching for 67-year-old Bill Curry, who had not been on the
sideline since being forced out by Kentucky in 1996.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') will
meet with Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lihs-bur-gur)
today to discuss the quarterback's six-game suspension. Backup
Steelers QB Byron Leftwich sprained his left knee in last night's
preseason finale, which probably means that third-stringer Dennis
Dixon will be the Steelers' starting QB for their regular season
opener against Atlanta.

NEW YORK (AP) - Maria Sharapova has advanced to the third round
of the U.S. Open with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Iveta Benesova of the
Czech Republic. Playing under the lights in New York last night,
the 14th-seeded Sharapova came suitably dressed with her dark blue
dress, which had a black collar and lapels, giving it a tuxedo-like
effect.

DENVER (AP) - Chase Utley drove in six runs and hit a grand slam
to cap a nine-run seventh inning last night as the Philadelphia
Phillies overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies
12-11. The Phillies moved within two games of NL East-leading
Atlanta, which dropped a 4-2 decision to the New York Mets.
