LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - The Washington Redskins opened the Mike
Shanahan-Donovan McNabb era with a 13-7 win over the mistake-prone
Dallas Cowboys. The game ended when Tony Romo found Roy Williams
open for an apparent game-winning touchdown, but Alex Barron was
called for holding, the 12th and most costly penalty on the
Cowboys.
SEATTLE (AP) - Pete Carroll returned to the NFL for the first
time in 11 years and coached the Seattle Seahawks to a surprisingly
easy 31-6 win over San Francisco. Matt Hasselbeck threw for two
touchdowns and ran for another as the Seahawks gave new coach
Carroll a winning start after he left Southern California to return
to the NFL.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) looked every bit a
two-time Cy Young Award winner and had a two-run single as the San
Francisco Giants roughed up San Diego ace Mat Latos (LAY'-tohs),
6-1. The Giants won three of four in San Diego over the weekend and
cut the struggling Padres' lead to less than one percentage point
atop the NL West.
DENVER (AP) - You can't count out the torrid Colorado Rockies,
who've won 10 in a row to climb within a game and a-half of the top
spot in the NL West. Pinch-hitter Jason Giambi (jee-AHM'-bee)
connected for a two-run ninth-inning homer of the Rockies' 4-2 win
over Arizona in advance of their three-game series against San
Diego starting at Coors Field tonight.
NEW YORK (AP) - For the third straight year, the U.S. Open will
finish a day later than planned. A rainout yesterday postponed the
scheduled men's final between top-seeded Rafael Nadal and third
seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) until today when
they'll try again at 4 p.m. (Eastern time).
