non-cancerous. Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will run the
defense for Houston in Sunday's game against Carolina.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA plan to give athletes a $2,000

be implemented; the perceived impact on competitive equity; and
implications for Title IX.

finale. The investigation determined several factors contributed to
what became a "perfect storm."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel
(kreh-NEL') is the interim coach of the Kansas City Chiefs after

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State football coach Joe Paterno
has decided to retire at the end of the season, his long career
brought down by his failure to do more about an allegation of child
sex abuse against a former assistant.
Paterno said in a statement Wednesday he is "absolutely
devastated" by the developments in the case of Jerry Sandusky, a
former defensive coordinator accused of molesting eight boys over
15 years.
Paterno says the board of trustees should "not spend a single
minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters
to address."
"This is a tragedy," Paterno says. "It is one of the great
sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had
done more."

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's House has given final
legislative approval to a bill that lets the University of North

to American Indians.

says the next offer is expected to call for rolling back players'
salaries.

UNDATED (AP) - Magic Johnson says it is "ridiculous" to
suggest that NBA commissioner David Stern is racist. The former

attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who is representing the NBA players'
association, that owners are treating players like "plantation
workers".

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A major college basketball star from the 1940's

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly
says Penn State's Joe Paterno, the winningest and perhaps most

Graham Spanier.

leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.

NEW YORK (AP) - NBA Players Association president Derek Fisher
doesn't think much of commissioner David Stern's latest contract

Regardless, it will drop to 47 percent Wednesday if players don't
accept the current offer by the league-imposed deadline.

in 2010 before posting a 71-91 mark last season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The embattled owner of the Los Angeles
Dodgers has reached an agreement with Major League Baseball to sell
one of the sport's most storied franchises. It ends Frank McCourt's

to maximize value for the Dodgers and McCourt.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday. The Detroit Lions' star
defensive tackle says he wanted a better understanding of how his

"continuing to play within the rules" and has learned from his
mistakes.

membership in the conference isn't conditional on the university
getting an early release from the Big East after all. Interim Big

Thomas also were suspended on Tuesday for what was announced as

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Philip Rivers fumbled a snap with 48
seconds left in regulation, costing the San Diego Chargers a chance
to kick a winning field goal. That led to the Kansas City Chiefs
beating the Chargers 23-20 in overtime on a Ryan Succop (SUH'-kuhp)
30-yard field goal for the Chiefs' fourth straight victory to tie
them with San Diego and Oakland for the AFC West lead.

UNDATED (AP) - The injury situation is looking better for the
Rams and the Texans this week, with star players from each team

adds an additional season and $30 million in guaranteed money,
bringing the left-hander's total over the next five years to $122
million.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Derek Lowe's durability - and price tag - were
too much for the Cleveland Indians to resist. The club acquired the
15-year veteran pitcher from the Atlanta Braves for a minor
leaguer, a low-risk move made more attractive by the fact the
Indians will pay Lowe just $5 million of the $15 million he's due
next season as part of a long-term deal he signed with Atlanta in
2009.

Yankees have made a contract offer to ace CC Sabathia, who has

four years remaining on his current deal. If the 31-year-old
Sabathia opts out, he would become the top pitcher on the
free-agent market.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - It's opening night at the World Series in St.
Louis where Chris Carpenter takes the mound for tonight's Fall
Classic opener against C.J. Wilson of the Texas Rangers. It's the
second straight trip to the World Series for the Rangers, who lost
to the San Francisco Giants last year, while the Cards are in it
for the first time since winning it all in 2006.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The coolest person at the World Series could be
Texas Rangers Game 1 starting pitcher C.J. Wilson, who recently
spent 2-1/2 minutes in a Dallas cryotherapy chamber, where liquid
nitrogen lowered the temperature to a frosty 295 degrees below zero
in an effort to speed body recovery. Wilson joked that 35 degrees
should be no problem after examining the frigid forecast for Game 1
at Busch Stadium, where game-time temperatures are forecast to be
in the 40s at game time and dropping throughout the night.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders, in need of a
quarterback in the wake of Jason Campbell's broken collarbone

Darrelle Revis (duh-REHL' REE'-vihs) and Mark Sanchez led them to a
24-6 victory over the winless Miami Dolphins. Revis returned an
interception 100 yards for the Jets' first touchdown and held
Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall in check. Sanchez ran for a TD
and completed 14 of his 25 passes for 201 yards, one touchdown and
no interceptions.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz
will not be fined by the NFL for their on-field altercation
following San Francisco's 25-19 win over Schwartz's Detroit Lions

to be separated in a scrum that included players and other coaches.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - The Saints say surgery on coach Sean
Payton's injured left leg was successful and he should be able to
return to work Wednesday. The club's orthopedic surgeon repaired a

Payton expects to call plays from the coaches' booth when the
Saints host Indianapolis on Sunday night.

against New England.

UNDATED (AP) - NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson says IndyCar should
stop racing on ovals and stick to road courses. The five-time
defending driving champ says he was glued to his television Sunday
watching the coverage of Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon's
death in the IndyCar season finale on the oval at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway. Johnson believes the IndyCar cars are built for street
circuits and road courses, and drive too fast to race on ovals.
