UNDATED (AP) - Longtime Dodgers great and Baseball Hall of Famer
Duke Snider has died of what the family called natural causes at
age 84. Snider hit over 40 homers for five consecutive seasons and
finished his 18-year career with a .295 average, 407 home runs and
1,333 RBIs. He homered four times in the 1955 World Series to help
Brooklyn win its only championship, one year before topping the
National League with a career-high 43 home runs.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jeff Gordon has ended his career-worst
66-race winless drought by taking the checkered flag in the Subway
Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Gordon led 138 of
312 laps and stayed in front after passing runner-up Kyle Busch
with eight laps to go. Gordon tied Cale Yarborough for fifth
all-time with his 83rd career victory, and first since April 2009
in Texas.

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) - Luke Donald spoiled Martin Kaymer's rise to
No. 1 in the world by winning the Match Play Championship with a
week so dominant that he never played the 18th hole. With the match
tied at the turn, Donald won two straight holes and finished off
Kaymer on the 16th hole for a 3-and-2 victory. Donald played only
89 holes over six matches and never trailed in any of them.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) - Johnson Wagner parred the first
playoff hole to beat Spencer Levin in the Mayakoba Golf Classic in
Mexico. Wagner closed with a 4-under-par 67 for a 17-under total in
his second PGA Tour victory and his first since the 2008 Houston
Open.

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook has
agreed to a five-year, $29 million contract extension. Seabrook has
been a Blackhawk since he was taken with the 14th overall pick in
the 2003 draft, scoring 34 goals and 177 points in 452 games over
parts of six seasons. He has led the Hawks in hits the last four
years.

KWBG Sports for February 25th

CHICAGO (AP) - Luol Deng (LOO'-ul dehng) swished a three-pointer
with 16 seconds left to break a tie and send the Chicago Heat to a
93-89 win over the Miami Heat. Derrick Rose had 26 and Deng
finished with 20 in a game that could have playoff seeding
implications in the Eastern Conference.

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) - When the dust settled in the desert on the
second day of the Match Play Championship, the lone remaining No. 1
seed left at the Match Play event is Martin Kaymer (KY'-mur), who
needed two extra holes to defeat Justin Rose. Phil Mickelson and
Lee Westwood both lost yesterday, joining Tiger Woods, who was
eliminated on opening day.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Miguel Cabrera has arrived at spring
training for the first time since he was arrested last week on
suspicion of drunken driving. He promptly apologized as Major
League Baseball said he will undergo treatment set up by doctors
administered by management and its players' union.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - NFL coaches and general managers now know
what they can and cannot do if there is a lockout. NFL officials
spent 45 minutes yesterday updating team decision-makers about
negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, what is
expected over the next 10 days before the current CBA runs out and
possible contingency plans with talks slated to resume next
Tuesday.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NFL will recommend team doctors and
trainers use a standardized sideline test to diagnose concussions
next season. The announcement is scheduled for this morning at the
league's annual scouting combine in Indianapolis.

NEW YORK (AP) - In his highly anticipated New York Knicks debut,
Carmelo Anthony had 27 points and 10 rebounds in leading the New
York Knicks past Milwaukee 114-108. Chauncey Billups, who came with
Anthony from Denver in Tuesday's blockbuster trade, finished with
21 points and eight assists as the Knicks won their third straight.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - There was a rash of bad injury news out of
spring training yesterday with the Cardinals learning their 20-game
winner Adam Wainwright could be lost for the season after being
sent back to St. Louis for tests on his injured right elbow. Cards
GM John Mozeliak (MOHZ'-lee-ak) says "things do not look
encouraging" for the runner-up in Cy Young voting last season.

UNDATED (AP) - The bad spring training news doesn't end there.
The L.A. Dodgers will be without pitcher Vicente Padilla
(puh-DEE'-uh) for as long as a few months as he faces elbow surgery
today and Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy will have surgery on his
right pinkie finger after breaking it yesterday.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The NFL and the players' union are planning
for meet again today in Washington, the seventh straight day of
mediated talks. Both sides declined comment as they race to get a
deal done before the end of the current collective bargaining
contract that runs out March 3.

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) - One day after knocking off Tiger Woods on
opening day, 16th-seed Thomas Bjorn (byorn) today faces Geoff
Ogilvy in a second-round match at the Match Play Championship. Phil
Mickelson, another No. 1 seed, takes on eighth-seed Rickie Fowler
today.

NEW YORK (AP) - New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni says the
cost of acquiring superstar Carmelo Anthony was worth it. Anthony
was netted in a three-team, 13-player trade that involved Minnesota
and Denver.

NEW YORK (AP) - Carmelo Anthony is expected to make his New York
Knicks debut tonight against Milwaukee. The Knicks formally
acquired Anthony from Denver when he signed a three-year, $65
million contract extension.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma City Thunder spoiled All-Star
slam dunk champ Blake Griffin's return to his hometown by beating
the Los Angeles Clippers 111-88. Griffin had 28 points, 11 rebounds
and eight assists in the loss as he threatened his first
triple-double in the NBA.

MIAMI (AP) - LeBron James scored 31 points, Dwyane (dwayn) Wade
added 23 and the Miami Heat opened their post-All-Star schedule
with an easy 117-97 win over the Sacramento Kings. Chris Bosh
scored 22 for Miami, which won for the 11th time in its last 12
games.

DALLAS (AP) - In the NHL, Nick Palmieri scored a power-play goal
with 5:37 left and Johan Hedberg stopped 19 shots for his 17th NHL
shutout as the New Jersey Devils won their eighth straight, 1-0
over Dallas. The surging Devils are 16-1-2 in their last 19 to move
closer to playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.

NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with the deal tells The
Associated Press the Denver Nuggets will send All-Star forward
Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks in a multi-player swap. The person
provided no other details of who was in the deal, but the Denver
Post reports the Knicks will send Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton,
Danilo Gallinari (dah-NIH'-loh gah-lih-NAHR'-ee), Timofey Mozgov
and a first-round pick in 2014 to Denver, along with additional
picks and cash. New York would receive Chauncey Billups, Shelden
Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman.

MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane (dwayn) Wade practiced with his Miami Heat
teammates Monday afternoon and plans to play Tuesday night against
Sacramento. Wade aggravated a right ankle injury during Sunday's
NBA All-Star game but says the pain isn't serious enough to miss
any playing time.

UNDATED (AP) - In top 25 college basketball action Monday night,
Number 3 Kansas had its way with Oklahoma State , 92 to 69. Number
17 Syracuse edged Number 15 Villanova 65 to 64.

UNDATED (AP) - Duke is back atop The Associated Press men's
basketball poll, capturing 35 of 65 first-place votes following
losses by the top four teams in last week's poll. Second-ranked
Ohio State picked up 10 first-place votes and is followed in the
poll by Kansas, Pittsburgh, Texas, San Diego State, BYU, Purdue,
Notre Dame and Arizona. St. John's is the newcomer in the poll,
debuting at No. 23 after Saturday's win over Pittsburgh.

UNDATED (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored late in the second period
and Michal Neuvirth (NOY'-vahrth) stopped 39 shots as the
Washington Capitals beat the Penguins 1-0 in Pittsburgh. Jonathan
Toews (tayvz) and Patrick Kane each had a goal and an assist while
the Blackhawks were scoring four times in the second period of a
5-3 triumph in St. Louis. And the New York Islanders posted a 5-1
victory against the visiting Florida Panthers as Matt Moulson
registered his second career hat trick.

Ogden Wrestlers Jared Hefler and Kyler Kiner will both be wrestling back through the consolation round this evening. Kiner lost his semi-final match by decision 11-7 to drop him out of the championship bracket. Hefler won his consolation bracket match by a score of 8-2. Each wrestler is guaranteed a spot on the winner's stand, and either could place as high as third.

PHOENIX (AP) - Dirk Nowitzki's (noh-VIHT'-skeez) 35 points paced
Dallas to a 112-106 win over Phoenix to wrap up the first half of
the NBA season. The Mavericks head into the All-Star break having
won 13 of their last 14 games.

CHICAGO (AP) - Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has picked San
Antonio's Tim Duncan to be the starting center for the Western
Conference in Sunday's All-Star game. Houston's Yao Ming was voted
in as starter by the fans, but has played in just five games this
season because of an injury.

NEW YORK (AP) - It's back to work for the negotiators in the NFL
labor dispute after both sides agreed to non-binding federal
mediation. The league and players union are set to resume stalled
talks with a mediator present in Washington Friday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former champ Robert Allenby leads a group of
nine golfers tied for the lead in the darkness-suspended first
round of the Northern Trust Open. Allenby posted a bogey-free
4-under 67 to tie with John Senden, Martin Laird, Spencer Levin,
Aaron Baddeley, Ben Martin, Bill Haas, Carl Pettersson and J.B.
Holmes.

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville
(KWEHN'-vihl) remained hospitalized because of bleeding that was
brought on by a small ulcer. Team physician Dr. Michael Terry said
in a statement, that Quenneville is expected to make a full
recovery and be released in the next few days.

Kiner will face Jordan Bremer (JR), Woodbury Central Moville in the Friday afternoon session which starts at 1pm. Ogden's 135-pounder, Jared Hefler, lost to Drew Proctor (SR), Tipton by a score 3-5, but came back through wrestle backs to defeat Trent Lundgren (JR), Graettinger-Terril with a major decision 15-6. Hefler also advances to Friday's session in the consolation bracket. Each wrestler is now assured of making it to the winner's stand on Saturday night, it's just a matter of which number they stand on.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals were unable to
hammer out a new contract with first baseman Albert Pujols
(POO'-hohlz) before his Wednesday deadline. The nine-time All-Star
could become a free agent this November after rejecting a deal
believed to be worth around $200 over eight years. Pujols is second
to Stan Musial on the team's all-time list with 408 home runs, 849
extra-base hits and 1,230 RBI, and is tied with Musial for fourth
with a .331 average.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start from
the back of the pack for Sunday's Daytona 500 after wrecking his
primary race car in practice. Hendrick Motorsports pulled out his
backup car following the crash, causing Earnhardt to forfeit the
pole he earned in last Sunday's qualifying.

UNDATED (AP) - Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance
Armstrong has told The Associated Press he has ended his cycling
career. The decision ends a comeback effort that failed to produce
an eighth title or diminish talk that performance-enhancing drugs
helped his career. He came out of a four-year retirement in 2009
and finished 23rd in last year's Tour de France.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard
Seymour has accepted a two-year, $30 million contract that includes
$22.5 million in guaranteed money. The deal allows Oakland to avoid
using a franchise tag on Seymour for a second straight season.
SI.com first reported the contract, saying Seymour would be paid
$15 million each of the next two years with $7.5 million in 2012
guaranteed in a bonus.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Charlotte Bobcats have removed the
interim tag from coach Paul Silas, giving him a one-year extension
that will keep him with the team at least through the 2011-12
season. The Bobcats are 15-13 under Silas after opening the season
9-19 under Larry Brown.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Prosecutors in the upcoming Barry Bonds
perjury trial benefited from two rulings by a federal judge on
Tuesday. The judge will allow into evidence an audio recording
prosecutors say contains Bonds' personal trainer discussing the
all-time home run king's steroids use. The judge also refused to
throw out one of the five charges alleging Bonds lied to a grand
jury in December 2003 when he testified he never knowingly took
steroids.

NEW YORK (AP) - Donald Trump is considering a possible
investment in the New York Mets, saying he's friends with the
Wilpon family and wants to help. Controlling owner Fred Wilpon is
under pressure from a lawsuit from the trustee trying to recover
money for the victims of the Bernard Madoff (MAY'-dawf) swindle.
Wilpon announced last month he was exploring sale of up to 25
percent of the team, and Trump says he hasn't thought that far down
the line about the possibility of investing without gaining control
of the ballclub.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL')
indicates the 2011 regular season could be in jeopardy if the
league and its players' union don't start "serious negotiations"
toward a new labor deal soon. In an op-ed piece posted Tuesday on
NFLlabor.com, Goodell writes: "The hard work to secure the next
NFL season must now accelerate in earnest." Goodell says owners
need more money to offset the costs of financing, building,
maintaining and operating stadiums.

UNDATED (AP) - A pair of Pro Bowl quarterbacks has been given
the franchise tag by their respective NFL teams. Four-time MVP
Peyton Manning has been given the exclusive franchise designation
by the Indianapolis Colts. Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller
Michael Vick also received the franchise label after leading the
team to a 10-6 record and an NFC East title.

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Dustin Byfuglien
(BUHF'-lihn) has signed a five-year, $26 million contract extension
rather than test the free agent market this summer. Byfuglien leads
all NHL defenseman with 17 goals and tops the Thrashers with 43
points. He has six game-winning goals, one shy of the NHL season
record for a defenseman.

UNDATED (AP) - The NFL has filed an unfair labor practice charge
against its players' union. In the filing with the National Labor
Relations Board, the league asked that the union be ordered to
bargain in good faith. The NFL says the union wants to avoid
reaching a new collective bargaining agreement by the early March
expiration of the old deal. The league says the union wants to
decertify so it can file an antitrust lawsuit.

NEW YORK (AP) - Kansas has unseated Ohio State as the top team
in the latest Associated Press men's basketball poll following the
Buckeye's loss to Wisconsin on Saturday. The Jayhawks picked up 22
of 65 first-place votes while the second-ranked Buckeyes took 14.
Texas actually had one more first-place vote than the Jayhawks, but
currently sits third, followed by Pittsburgh and Duke.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals and representatives
for Albert Pujols (POO'-hohlz) have agreed to a 24-hour extension
on contract extension talks out of respect for Stan Musial. The
Cardinals Hall of Famer will be awarded the Presidential Medal of
Freedom in Washington today, and general manager John Mozeliak says
the club did not want to distract from Musial's special day.
Pujols' agent originally wanted a contract agreement in place by
today, the first workout day for St. Louis pitchers and catchers.

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) - Tiger Woods has apologized after
being fined an undisclosed sum by the European Tour for spitting
during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic. Woods said on
Twitter that he agreed with the fine, adding that it was
inconsiderate to spit like that and he knows better. Woods spit on
the 12th green after missing a par putt on his way to a 3-over 75
that kept him winless since November 2009.

UNDATED (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have added more scoring
to their lineup by getting forward Kris Versteeg from Toronto for
first- and third-round picks in this year's draft. Versteeg was
sixth on the Maple Leafs with 35 points after helping Chicago win
the Stanley Cup last summer. And Colorado forward Peter Forsberg
has announced his retirement following a two-game comeback attempt.

UNDATED (AP) - The Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic picked up
key victories yesterday. The Celtics leapfrogged over Miami for the
NBA's Eastern Conference lead as Rajon Rondo (RAH'-zhahn RAHN'-doh)
had a triple-double of 11 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds in an
85-82 triumph over the Heat. Dwight Howard's 31 points and 13
rebounds led the Magic to an 89-75 stifling of the Los Angeles
Lakers.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Washington Wizards have halted their
season-opening 25-game road losing streak with a 115-100 win at
Cleveland. Nick Young poured in 31 points to help the Wizards
finish four shy of the 1992-93 Dallas Mavericks' NBA record of 29
consecutive road losses to start a season.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Dale Earnhardt has won the pole for
Sunday's Daytona 500 with a top lap of 186.089, a little more than
1/10 of a mile faster than Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon. Earnhardt
is coming off a disappointing season and spent part of the past
week facing questions about the 10-year anniversary of his father's
death at the track. The remainder of the field will be set
following Thursday's two qualifying races.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - NASCAR made two technical changes in
hopes of limiting two-car hookups and high speeds before next
Sunday's Daytona 500, telling teams to add pressure-release valves
to cooling systems and reduce the size of grill openings. The
changes should limit the time two cars can run bumper to bumper
around the 2 1/2-mile superspeedway, something that became a
concern after speeds topped 206 mph during Saturday's Budweiser
Shootout.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux
(leh-MYOO') has criticized the NHL for the way it handled the
aftermath of Friday's brawl-filled game between his team and the
New York Islanders. The Hall of Famer issued a statement saying the
league failed in its punishment of the New York Islanders following
a fight-filled game that included 346 penalty minutes, 10
ejections, 15 fighting majors and 20 misconducts. Lemieux called
the game a travesty, adding, "It was painful to watch the game I
love turn into a sideshow like that."

BOSTON (AP) - Ray Allen is the NBA's career leader in
three-point buckets after hitting three in the Boston Celtics'
92-86 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers last night. Allen's second 3
was the 2,561st of his career, moving him ahead of Reggie Miller.
Allen finished with 20 points, but Kobe Bryant scored 20 of his 23
after halftime to lead the Lakers to victory.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Ty Corbin will make his Utah Jazz head
coaching debut tonight against the visiting Phoenix Suns. Corbin
was promoted when Jerry Sloan stepped down yesterday after 1,127
victories over 23 seasons, saying it was time to go. Sloan was the
longest-tenured coach in the four major professional sports, and is
the only coach in NBA history to win 1,000 games with the same
team.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Barry Bonds now faces five felony charges
instead of 11 after federal prosecutors filed their third revised
indictment on baseball's all-time home run leader. In the new
indictment, prosecutors reduced from nine to three the number of
charges alleging Bonds lied under oath when he testified that he
never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs. Bonds is
scheduled to stand trial beginning March 21.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers and outfielder Josh
Hamilton have avoided salary arbitration by working out a two-year,
$24 million deal. Hamilton won the American League MVP Award last
year after hitting a major league-leading .359 with 32 homers, 40
doubles and 100 RBI in 133 games. He's a lifetime .311 hitter with
93 homers and 331 RBI in 468 career games.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Steve Marino and D.A. Points share
the lead through one round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Marino shot
a 7-under-par 65 at Spyglass Hill while Points fired a 7-under 63
at Monterey Peninsula, putting them one stroke ahead of Alex Cejka
(CHAY'-kuh).

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Third-ranked Texas continued its perfect
start in the Big 12 with a 68-52 victory at Oklahoma. Jordan
Hamilton scored 20 for the 21-3 Longhorns, who are 9-0 in league
play for the first time since doing it in the old Southwest
Conference 23 years ago.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Fifth-ranked Duke rallied from 16 down to
beat archrival 20th-ranked North Carolina 79-73. Nolan Smith scored
22 of his career-high 34 in the second half when the Blue Devils
outscored the Tar Heels 50-30.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Jonathan Mitchell's four-point play with
less than a second remaining capped a career-high 25-point night
and gave Rutgers a 77-76 upset win over No. 9 Villanova. Mitchell
hit a 3-point shot from about 25 feet, was fouled by Corey Fisher
and made the game-winning free throw.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The pace and intensity of labor negotiations
in the NFL is picking up less than a month before the current
contract expires on March 3. The two sides met for the second time
in five days yesterday and more talks are scheduled for today in
Washington.

BOSTON (AP) - There was a fight-filled, old-time Original Six
hockey game in Boston last night and when the dust cleared the
Boston Bruins outscored Montreal 8-6. Milan Lucic (LOO'-chich) and
Michael Ryder each scored twice for Boston in a game that featured
a combined 182 penalty minutes and even a fight between the two
All-Star goalies, Boston's Tim Thomas and Montreal's Carey Price.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl returned from
an eight-game suspension, but couldn't have liked what he saw from
his Vols last night. The 18th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats ripped the
Vols 73-61 as Pearl returned from a suspension handed out by the
SEC for lying to NCAA investigators looking into the Vols'
recruiting practices.

UNDATED (AP) - Michigan State and North Carolina are moving
forward with plans to play a basketball game aboard an aircraft
carrier next Veterans' Day. Michigan State athletic director Mark
Hollis says the long-discussed game will take place this year in
San Diego's harbor.

HOUSTON (AP) - Kevin Love set a Minnesota record with his 38th
consecutive double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 14
rebounds in the Timberwolves' 112-108 win over Houston. Love passed
Kevin Garnett for Minnesota's double-double record and his is the
longest since Moses Malone had 44 in a row during the 1982-83
season

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Green Bay Packers fans enjoyed a final
celebration for their Super Bowl heroes during a victory party at
Lambeau Field. Coach Mike McCarthy brought out the Lombardi Trophy
and promised fans to win next year's Super Bowl as fans screamed
their approval.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs took advantage of
the New York Islanders emergency goalie and snapped a five-game,
road-losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Isles. New York was
forced to start Mikko Koskinen in his NHL debut after second-string
goalie Kevin Poulin hurt his left leg during pregame warmups.

DALLAS (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers now have lost more
consecutive games than any other team in NBA history. Jason Terry
scored 23 and Dallas won its ninth in a row, 99-96 over the
Cavaliers, who've lost 25 in a row.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Unhappy with his new role as DH,
all-time Texas career hits leader Michael Young has asked the
Rangers to trade him. But Texas GM Jon Daniels says no trade is
imminent.

NEW YORK (AP) - Green Bay's nerve-wracking 31-25 Super Bowl
victory over Pittsburgh set a new U.S. television viewership record
- 111 million people, compared with the 106.5 million who watched
the 2010 Super Bowl between New Orleans and Indianapolis. The
series finale of "M-A-S-H" had held the title of the most-watched
TV show in the United States for 27 years, but now it's No. 3.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The last coaching vacancy has been
filled. The Tennessee Titans named longtime offensive line coach
Mike Munchak to replace Jeff Fisher, who left after 16 years
coaching the Titans following their 6-10 season.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - They had to wait until Monday to crown
the winner of the Phoenix Open golf tournament, but that was just
fine with Mark Wilson. The journeyman outlasted Jason Dufner on the
second playoff hole for Wilson's second victory this year, and
fourth of his career.

DALLAS (AP) - The Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
31-25 yesterday at Cowboys Stadium for their fourth Super Bowl
victory and 13th NFL championship. Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers
completed 24 of his 39 passes for 304 yards, three touchdowns and
no interceptions for the Packers, who also scored on Nick Collins'
37-yard interception return. The Packers held Rashard Mendenhall to
63 yards on 14 carries and caused him to fumble, setting up Green
Bay's final TD.

DALLAS (AP) - About 400 fans were not allowed inside Cowboys
Stadium for Super Bowl 45 because temporary seating on the third
and fifth levels was deemed unsafe. Another 850 people were
relocated elsewhere in the stadium, while those turned away were
promised a refund of triple the face value of their ticket. About
15,000 temporary seats were added to the stadium in a bid to set
the record for the largest crowd in Super Bowl history, but
attendance fell short of the mark.

DALLAS (AP) - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is the
first unanimous winner of The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable
Player Award since the AP began using a nationwide panel of media
members who cover the league. Brady threw for 36 touchdowns, was
intercepted just four times and wasn't picked off over his final
335 regular-season attempts in leading the Patriots to a
league-best 14-2 record.

DALLAS (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') says
this weekend's bargaining session with the players' union was
"beneficial," telling "Fox News Sunday" that drug testing is a
key issue in labor talks. Goodell says "a number of" individual
players and owners participated in a two-hour meeting Saturday, the
first formal bargaining session since November.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma
(BYLZ'-muh) nodded his head yes yesterday when asked if he was
preparing as if injured Evgeni Malkin (ehv-GEH'-nee MAHL'-kihn)
won't return until the fall. An MRI on Saturday showed the all-star
center tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee Friday night in his
first game back after sitting out five straight with a knee problem
and a sinus infection.

UNDATED (AP) - The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers
were without key players as they worked out yesterday in
preparation for Super Bowl 45. Packers receiver Donald Driver sat
out because of a thigh injury, while linebacker Erik Walden missed
the workout because of an ankle sprain. Steelers center Maurkice
(MAHR'-kees) Pouncey got treatment for his sprained left ankle
during Pittsburgh's workout, and defensive end Aaron Smith didn't
participate in scrimmages as he tries to return from a torn triceps
muscle.

DALLAS (AP) - Another disagreement has developed in the ongoing
NFL labor situation, this time over franchise tags put on players.
The league is telling clubs they can place that designation on
players whose contracts are expiring, even if there's no new
collective bargaining agreement to replace the one that ends March
3. The union is telling agents the NFL is wrong about that.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Clippers' Blake Griffin is going to his
first All-Star game, and Kevin Garnett matched an NBA record with
his 14th straight selection as one of a record-tying four Boston
Celtics selected for the midseason event. Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce
and Ray Allen will accompany Garnett, who equaled Jerry West,
Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone for the most consecutive
selections. The Celtics joined the 2006 Detroit Pistons as the only
teams to have four players picked as reserves by the coaches.

NEW YORK (AP) - New York Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte will
announce his retirement at a news conference later today. Pettitte
spent 13 seasons with the Yankees and three years with the Astros,
going 240-138 with a 3.88 ERA. He's the all-time leader in
postseason victories, pitching to a 19-10 mark with a 3.83 earned
run average.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Four players share the first-round lead
at the Phoenix Open. Bill Haas, Jason Bohn, Tom Gillis and Tom
Lehman (LAY'-mihn) each opened with 6-under 65's. Lucas Glover,
Chris Couch and Ben Crane are one shot back, one ahead of a sextet
that includes Phil Mickelson.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Kevin Durant continued a scoring tear with
43 points and 10 rebounds and led a key fourth-quarter run and the
Oklahoma City Thunder beat the New Orleans Hornets 104-93. Durant
surpassed 40 points for the third time in four games, and leads the
NBA with five 40-point games this season.
CELVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers' long losing streak is
almost history. Cleveland's slide reached 22 games - one shy of the
NBA's single-season record - as Danny Granger scored 23 in
Indiana's 117-112 win over the Cavaliers, who can tie the mark with
a loss in Memphis on Friday night.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Rick Jackson had 13 points and 13
rebounds in 17th-ranked Syracuse's 66-58 victory over sixth-ranked
Connecticut last night as the Orange avoided the first five-game
losing streak in coach Jim Boeheim's (BAY'-hymz) 35 seasons.
Brandon Triche had 16 points for the Orange.
DALLAS (AP) - New England coach Bill Belichick easily beat out
Tampa Bay's Raheem Morris to win his third Associated Press NFL
Coach of the Year award. Belichick, who won in 2003 and 2007, now
trails only Don Shula, a four-time winner of the award.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - With overnight temperatures in the 20s,
frost delays might be in store for today's first round of the
Phoenix Open. Bubba Watson enters this event coming off a
one-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson last weekend.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers rookie center
Maurkice (mar-KEES') Pouncey says he still hopes to play in the
Super Bowl against the Packers despite dealing with a high left
ankle sprain. The Pro Bowl pick was off crutches at media day on
Tuesday, but still has a bulky walking boot on his left foot.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans center Emeka Okafor (eh-MEH'-kuh
OH'-kuh-fohr) will be sidelined one to three weeks because of his
strained abdominal muscle. Okafor was injured late in the first
half of Sunday's loss at Phoenix. Okafor is the Hornets' leading
rebounder with 10.1 per game and has averaged 11.1 points and 1.8
blocks this season.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Pacers owner Herb Simon says team
president Larry Bird's job is safe through the rest of the season,
and that he could be back next year despite the team's current
18-27 record. Some fans have grown restless because the Pacers have
missed the playoffs for four straight seasons. Simon told The
Associated Press that he feels Bird has done a good job since
taking full control of basketball decisions after the 2007-08
season.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Sabres owner Tom Golisano (gah-lih-SAH'noh)
has agreed to sell the NHL franchise to Pennsylvania businessman
Terry Pegula, pending league approval. The team announced the
agreement, but details were not released. Golisano and managing
partner Larry Quinn have scheduled a news conference for Thursday.
The Buffalo News reports the agreement includes $175 million for
the Sabres and an additional $14 million in liabilities.

UNDATED (AP) - The New York Mets' top officials have met with
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig (SEE'-lihg) to discuss the team's
finances, days after team ownership announced it will consider
seeking a minority partner. A person familiar with the meeting says
it involved owner Fred Wilpon, team president Saul Katz and chief
operating officer Jeff Wilpon and took place at the commissioner's
office. The Wilpons were sued last month by trustee Irving Picard,
who's seeking to recover money for victims of the Bernie Madoff
Ponzi scheme.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Third-ranked Texas built a
25-point lead by halftime and walloped 16th-ranked Texas A&M 69-49
behind Jordan Hamilton's 20 points. That's the Longhorns' first
victory in College Station since 2004.

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a game featuring 16 turnovers by each team,
13th-ranked Georgetown won its fifth in row, 62-59 over 15th-ranked
Louisville. Chris Wright hit for a career-high 24 for the Hoyas.

DALLAS (AP) - Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu (poh-luh-MAH'-loo)
is the Associated Press 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year
award, edging Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews 17-15 in a vote of
a nationwide panel of 50 media members. The pair will be on the
field for Sunday's Super Bowl.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Injured Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin
returned to practice yesterday and is a step closer to his eventual
return to game action. He's missed three games with a knee injury
and sinus infection and will probably also sit out tonight's game
in New York against the Rangers.

MIAMI (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers are two losses shy of tying
the single-season NBA longest losing streak after suffering their
21st straight loss, 117-90 to Miami last night. Dwayne (dwayn) Wade
led the way with 34, ex-Cav LeBron James added 24 and eight assists
and ex-Cav center Zydrunas Ilgauskas (zih-DROO'-nuhs
ihl-GOWS'-kuhs) contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds.
