UNDATED (AP) - Longtime Dodgers great and Baseball Hall of Famer
Duke Snider has died of what the family called natural causes at
age 84. Snider hit over 40 homers for five consecutive seasons and
finished his 18-year career with a .295 average, 407 home runs and
1,333 RBIs. He homered four times in the 1955 World Series to help
Brooklyn win its only championship, one year before topping the
National League with a career-high 43 home runs.
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jeff Gordon has ended his career-worst
66-race winless drought by taking the checkered flag in the Subway
Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Gordon led 138 of
312 laps and stayed in front after passing runner-up Kyle Busch
with eight laps to go. Gordon tied Cale Yarborough for fifth
all-time with his 83rd career victory, and first since April 2009
in Texas.
MARANA, Ariz. (AP) - Luke Donald spoiled Martin Kaymer's rise to
No. 1 in the world by winning the Match Play Championship with a
week so dominant that he never played the 18th hole. With the match
tied at the turn, Donald won two straight holes and finished off
Kaymer on the 16th hole for a 3-and-2 victory. Donald played only
89 holes over six matches and never trailed in any of them.
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) - Johnson Wagner parred the first
playoff hole to beat Spencer Levin in the Mayakoba Golf Classic in
Mexico. Wagner closed with a 4-under-par 67 for a 17-under total in
his second PGA Tour victory and his first since the 2008 Houston
Open.
CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook has
agreed to a five-year, $29 million contract extension. Seabrook has
been a Blackhawk since he was taken with the 14th overall pick in
the 2003 draft, scoring 34 goals and 177 points in 452 games over
parts of six seasons. He has led the Hawks in hits the last four
years.
