KWBG Sports for October 7th

NEW YORK (AP) - It will be the Texas Rangers hosting the Detroit
Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on
Saturday. Don Kelly and Delmon Young hit solo homers on consecutive
pitches in the first inning as the Tigers beat the New York Yankees
3-2 in Game 5 of the division series. Doug Fister allowed a run and
five hits in five innings, and Joaquin Benoit (WAH'-keen BEHN'-wah)
worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to keep Detroit
ahead.

CHICAGO (AP) - Robin Ventura has accepted a multiyear contract
to replace Ozzie Guillen (gee-EHN') as manager of the Chicago White
Sox. The former White Sox third baseman was hired by the club last
June as a special adviser to director of player development Buddy
Bell. Ventura has no previous major league managing or coaching
experience.

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins have opened their Stanley Cup
title defense by losing 2-1 to the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.
Bruins forward Brad Marchand scored a power-play goal midway
through the first period, minutes after the team raised its first
Stanley Cup banner in 39 years. Claude Giroux (juh-ROO') and Jakob
Voracek (YAH'-kuhb VOHR'-uh-chehk) scored 47 seconds apart in the
final minute of the first period to ruin the Bruins' night.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Peyton Manning says he still holds out hope
that he will be back on the field for the Colts this season. The
four-time league MVP says he is getting X-rays every four weeks on
his neck and his recovery has progressed to the point that doctors
will allow him to stand on the sideline, which is where he plans to
watch Sunday's game against Kansas City. Manning has not played a
down since having neck surgery in May.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne (HEH'-nee)
has decided to have season-ending shoulder surgery and has been
placed on the injured reserve list. Miami is replacing him on the
roster by signing 33-year-old quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who was
released Tuesday by the New York Giants after recovering from a
blood disorder that sent him to the hospital in August. Henne
separated his left shoulder win in the first quarter of last
Sunday's loss at San Diego.
