KWBG Sports for September 30th


 NEW YORK (AP) - Two of baseball's premiere pitchers will square
off tonight when Justin Verlander goes for Detroit against the
Yankees' CC Sabathia (suh-BA'-thee-uh) in the first game of the
ALDS. Verlander topped the majors with 24 wins this season to go
with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts. Sabathia was 19-8 for New York
with a 3.00 ERA and 230 strikeouts.
   
     CLEVELAND (AP) - An 11-win improvement over last season has
earned Manny Acta another year on the job. Cleveland has picked up
the 2013 option on its manager after the team finished second in
the AL Central with an 80-82 mark.
   
     INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - It looks like Curtis Painter will get his
first NFL start when the winless Colts take on Tampa Bay Sunday. He
led the team to a game-tying touchdown late in Sunday's game
against Pittsburgh in relief of Kerry Collins who continues to
suffer from concussion-like symptoms.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) - New Flyers captain Chris Pronger had an
assist in his preseason debut to help Philadelphia edge New Jersey
2-1. The rugged defenseman last played April 30, before undergoing
offseason surgeries on his wrist and back.
   
     KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart
says the Southeastern Conference will expand again and officials at
each school need to have a number of frank discussions before
moving forward. Hart says those conversations will take place
shortly. The SEC recently added Texas A&M as the conference's 13th
school.

UNDATED (AP) - Evan Longoria and Dan Johnson powered Tampa Bay
into the American League playoffs last night, leading an 8-7 win
over the New York Yankees while Boston was losing to Baltimore 4-3.
Longoria won it with a walk-off homer in the 12th inning after
providing a three-run blast that capped a six-run eighth. Tampa Bay
was one strike from a 7-6 loss until Johnson homered to force extra
innings.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals rode Chris Carpenter's
arm and bat into the National League playoffs as wild card
champions. Carpenter poked an RBI single and struck out 11 in a
two-hitter to lead the Cards to an 8-0 pounding of Houston. The
Redbirds actually claimed the wild card after Hunter Pence hit an
RBI single in the 13th to give Philadelphia a 4-3 win over Atlanta,
ending the Braves' season.
   
     MIAMI (AP) - Ozzie Guillen (gee-EHN') was introduced as the
Florida Marlins' new manager Wednesday, confirming what Guillen had
announced two days earlier. Guillen's Web site leaked the news late
Monday that he had agreed to take the job, and he tweeted Tuesday
that he was in Miami and "ready to go." He led the White Sox to
the 2005 World Series championship and was with Chicago for eight
seasons before he asked to be let out of his contract on Monday.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick
practiced yesterday and said there's a "100 percent" chance he
starts Sunday against San Francisco. Vick was initially diagnosed
with a broken, non-throwing hand after getting hurt in a 29-16 loss
to the New York Giants three days ago. But tests on Monday revealed
he had a contusion on his right hand.
   
     BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The attorney for Jordan Jefferson says
LSU has lifted its suspension imposed on the quarterback after a
grand jury reduced charges stemming from Jefferson's involvement in
a bar fight. Jefferson is now charged with simple battery in
connection with the Aug. 19 brawl. The grand jury Wednesday also
cleared reserve linebacker Josh Johns of charges.

UNDATED (AP) - Tampa Bay and Boston remain tied for the American
League wild card heading into the final day of the regular season.
The Rays were a 5-2 winner over the New York Yankees last night as
Matt Joyce hit a go-ahead, three-run homer after Ben Zobrist
(ZOH'-brihst) went deep. The Red Sox held off Baltimore 8-7 after
Ryan Lavarnway hit a three-run homer and a solo shot to help Boston
take an 8-4 lead.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals have caught up to Atlanta
for the National League wild card by crushing Houston 13-6 while
the Braves were losing 7-1 to Philadelphia. Ryan Theriot
(TEHR'-ee-oh) delivered a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the
seventh for the Redbirds after Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt
(OHZ'-wahlt) completed a three-hitter against the Braves.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - Ozzie Guillen (gee-EHN') announced he'll be
managing the Florida Marlins next season. However, the team has not
confirmed they have hired the former Chicago White Sox skipper,
although an announcement could be made before the Marlins' final
home game at Pro Player Stadium. Guillen was let out of his Chicago
White Sox contract on Monday after eight seasons, one World Series
championship and two division titles.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - NBA labor talks are scheduled to begin again
today after the two sides met for about two hours yesterday.
Neither side would say if there were any new proposals, with both
using the word "concepts." Negotiators are expected to meet in
small groups, today, although Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said
the owners' labor relations committee would be prepared to return
to the table this week if necessary.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - Bill Haas got another big payoff when he was
picked for the U.S. team at the Presidents Cup. Fred Couples said
more than a month ago he would use one of his captain's picks on
Tiger Woods. He added Haas, who on Sunday won the Tour Championship
to capture the FedEx Cup.

 UNDATED (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox are dead
even in the American League wild-card standings this morning. Rays
ace James Shields came within one out of his league-leading 12th
complete game, limiting the Bombers to two runs and six hits in a
5-2 win over the New York Yankees. The Red Sox fell into a tie for
the wild card as Josh Beckett surrendered six runs in six innings
of a 6-3 loss at Baltimore.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - Atlanta and St. Louis lost last night, keeping
the Braves one game ahead of the Cardinals for the National League
wild card with two games to play. Cliff Lee helped Philadelphia
knock off the Braves 4-2, allowing five hits in six innings for his
17th win. Angel Sanchez laid down an RBI bunt in the bottom of the
10th to lift Houston past the Cards 5-4, preventing the Redbirds
from pulling even with the Braves.
   
     CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago White Sox will have a new manager
today after releasing Ozzie Guillen (gee-EHN') from the remainder
of his contract. Guillen had one year left in his deal and was
seeking an extension with a pay raise. He is the only White Sox
skipper since 1917 to lead the team to a World Series title,
winning it in 2005.
   
     IRVING, Texas (AP) - Tony Romo played through a broken rib last
night and completed 22 of his 36 passes for 255 yards as the Dallas
Cowboys outlasted Washington 18-16. Rookie Dan Bailey put the
Cowboys ahead for good with his sixth field goal of the night, a
40-yarder with 1:57 remaining. Felix Jones ran for a career-high
115 yards despite separating his shoulder against San Francisco the
previous game.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles say a CT scan shows
Michael Vick's right hand is bruised and not broken, as was
originally believed after he was forced from Sunday's loss to the
division rival New York Giants in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia
coach Andy Reid says his star quarterback's non-throwing hand is
swollen and Vick's status for this week's game against the San
Francisco 49ers is up in the air.

UNDATED (AP)- The Atlanta Braves head into their final series of
the regular 162-game baseball season with a one-game lead over St.
Louis in the wild card despite having lost 10 of their last 15
games, including yesterday's 3-0 loss in Washington. The Braves
head into Philadelphia for a three-game series starting tonight
against the NL East champion Phils while the Cards close out with a
three-game series against last-place Houston, which is sporting a
55-104 record.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - The Boston Red Sox head to Baltimore for their
final three games with a one-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL
wild card. Jacoby (jah-KOH'-bee) Ellsbury delivered a three-run
home run in the 14th inning to give the Red Sox a 7-4 win and a
doubleheader split with the New York Yankees last night as the Rays
host the Yanks for the final three games of the regular season.
   
     LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - Tony Stewart has won just two races in this
NASCAR Sprint Cup season and both have come in the past eight days
to vault him atop the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings. Stewart
won in New Hampshire yesterday and four other Chase drivers
finished in the top 10 -- . Brad Keselowski was second, Jeff Gordon
was fourth, Matt Kenseth was sixth and Carl Edwards finished
eighth.
   
     ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The University of New Mexico has fired
head football coach Mike Locksley and a school official says
defensive coordinator George Barlow will serve as interim head
coach for the rest of the season. The Lobos are 0-4 this season and
2-26 under Locksley, who was in his third year with the Lobos.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP)- Michael Vick is banged up again, this time
it's a broken hand and is availability for next Sunday's game
against San Fraancisco is uncertain. The Philadelphia Eagles
quarterback, who bounced back from a concussion last week, injured
his non-throwing right hand after he was hit hard by Chris Canty in
the third quarter of a 29-16 loss to the New York Giants yesterday.

 UNDATED (AP) - The Big 12 dumped its embattled commissioner Dan
Beebe and said nine schools had pledged to give their TV rights to
the conference for the next six years. That's a step intended to
preserve a fractured league that has lost two members in the past
year and is expected to lose another by next summer.
   
     ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals start the final weekend
of the regular season trailing the Atlanta Braves by two games in
the NL wild card with six games left. The Cards suffered a costly
loss yesterday, giving up six runs in the ninth inning in an 8-6
loss to the New York Mets.
   
     ATLANTA (AP) - Keegan Bradley starts second round play at the
Tour Championship with a two-shot lead following his opening round
6-under 64. Luke Donald, Jason Dufner and Chez Reavie (chehz
REE'-vee) are tied for second, two shots back.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - A person with knowledge of the plans says the
NBA will cancel training camps and some preseason games today after
failing to reach a new labor deal with its players. Training camps
were expected to begin Oct. 3, but Commissioner David Stern is
acknowledging that "the calendar is not our friend," in the hopes
of playing a complete NBA season.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Brendan Shanahan has handed out his first
suspensions since becoming the NHL's dean of discipline. He's
banned Calgary forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond (leh-TOOR'-noh
leh-BLAWN') for the rest of the preseason and the Flames' first
game of the regular season. He's also suspended Philadelphia
forward Jody Shelley for the rest of the preseason and first five
games of the regular season for a hit on Toronto's Darryl Boyce.

 MIAMI (AP) - Javier Vazquez shut down his former team on two
hits as Florida topped the slumping Atlanta Braves 4-0. The Braves
have lost 13 of their last 20 to see their lead in the wild card
race shrink to 1  1/2 games.
   
     ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Freese drove in five runs with a go-ahead
three-run homer and a triple, and surging St. Louis beat the Mets
6-5. The Cardinals have won four straight and 12 of 14 to move
within 1 1/2 games of Atlanta in the National League wild-card race.
   
     PHOENIX (AP) - Miguel Montero's homer sparked a three-run first
inning that included four stolen bases and Arizona went on to beat
Pittsburgh 8-5. The Diamondbacks magic number for clinching the NL
West is now down to two.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - Mike Modano has decided to end his NHL career
after 21 seasons. He goes out as the top U.S.-born scorer in the
league history with 561 goals and 1,374 points. Mondano was part of
a Stanley Cup winner with Dallas in 1999.
   
     JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio has
named rookie Blaine Gabbert as starting quarterback for Sunday's
game at Carolina. He replaces Luke McCown who threw four
interceptions against the New York Jets last week.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Clayton Kershaw notched his 20th victory by
pitching the L.A. Dodgers to a 2-1 win over San Francisco, ending
the Giants' eight-game winning streak. Kershaw is the Dodgers'
first 20-game winner in 21 seasons and is 20-5 overall, and 5-0
against the Giants this season.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees can clinch their 16th trip
to the postseason in the last 17 years with one victory today in
their day-night doubleheader against Tampa Bay, which fell 5-0 to
the Yanks last night. The Yanks lead Boston by a season-high six
games in the AL East with the Red Sox owning a two-game lead over
the Rays in the wild card as both those teams lost last night.
   
     CHICAGO (AP) - Shaun Marcum threw eight strong innings and the
Milwaukee Brewers moved a step closer to the NL Central title with
a 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. Milwaukee needs a combination of
three wins or Cardinals losses to clinch the division after the
Cardinals rallied with six runs in the seventh inning to beat the
New York Mets 11-6 last night.
   
     OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Two people with knowledge of the
negotiations say the Oakland Athletics have reached agreement to
name Bob Melvin their permanent manager with a new three-year
contract. Melvin is expected to formally receive his new deal in
the coming days.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Twelve is enough for the Pac-12, which has
decided not to expand. Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas
Tech were among those considering a potential move from the Big 12,
which now appears to have a new lease on life.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Eli Manning tossed a pair of TD
passes and linebacker Michael Boley scored on a 65-yard fumble
return to lead the New York Giants to a 28-16 victory over the St.
Louis Rams for their first win of the season. That gave Giants
coach Tom Coughlin (KAWF'-lihn) a win over Steve Spagnuolo
(spag-NOH'-loh) in their first matchup since the one-time Giants
defensive coordinator left to take over as coach of the winless
Rams.
   
     INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Peyton Manning made it out to practice
yesterday, but he's still nowhere close to throwing a football. The
four-time MVP was in good spirits when he made his first public
appearance on the field since having neck surgery Sept. 8. Manning
didn't participate in the practice.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Michael Vick's status for the Eagles' next
game is uncertain because of a concussion sustained in Sunday
night's 35-31 loss at Atlanta. The veteran quarterback must pass
several tests and be evaluated by an independent neurologist before
he can be cleared to return. If he can't, Mike Kafka or Vince Young
gets the nod.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals gained a game in the NL
wild card race and now trail Atlanta by 2-1/2 games. The Cards held
off Philadelphia 4-3 while Omar Infante (in-fahn-TAY') hit two-run
walkoff home run to give the Florida Marlins a 6-5 win over the
Braves.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Mariano Rivera sits atop the world of relief
pitchers after notching his record 602nd save, passing Trevor
Hoffman on the all-time saves list. It came in the Yanks' 6-4 win
over Minnesota which, combined with Boston's doubleheader split
with Baltimore, increased the Yanks' lead to five games in the AL
East.

 ATLANTA (AP) - In his first game back in Atlanta since coming
out of prison for his role in a dogfighting scheme, Philadelphia
Eagles quarterback Michael Vick left early with a neck injury and
appeared to be spitting out blood after being slammed into one of
his own linemen late in the third quarter. Backup Mike Kafka took
over for Vick and finished a touchdown drive that gave Philadelphia
a 31-21 lead, but Matt Ryan threw four TDs and the Falcons defeated
the Eagles 35-31.
   
     SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Playing with a fractured rib, Tony Romo hit
Jesse Holley on a 77-yard completion on the Cowboys' first play of
overtime that set up Dan Bailey's winning 19-yard field goal, and
Dallas rallied for a 27-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
That got Romo out of the Dallas doghouse after he suffered a
fourth-quarter meltdown in a 27-24 road loss to the Jets in the
season opener.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Allen Craig hit two homers and Albert Pujols
(POO'-hohlz) also went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals improved
their playoff chances with a 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia
Phillies last night. The Cards moved within 3 1/2 games of the Atlanta
Braves in the NL wild-card chase with their ninth win in 11 games.
   
     OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Justin Verlander won his 12th straight
start to improve to 24-5 by pitching the AL Central champion
Detroit Tigers over the Oakland Athletics 3-0. Verlander has the
most wins in a major league season since Arizona's Randy Johnson in
2002 and needs one more win to become the winningest pitcher in a
season since Oakland's Bob Welch went 27-6 in 1990.
   
     JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - The first race of the NASCAR Chase for the
Sprint Cup championship will be run today at Chicagoland Speedway
after yesterday's rainout. Matt Kenseth is the pole-sitter for the
10-race Chase

KWBG Sports for September 16th


OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Athletics snapped the Tigers' 12-game
winning streak and prevented Detroit from clinching the division
title by beating the AL Central leaders 6-1 in Oakland. The Tigers
can clinch tonight by beating the A's, or if Cleveland loses at
Minnesota.
   
     STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - LSU continues its football domination
of Mississippi State. The third-ranked Tigers' 19-6 victory on the
25th-ranked Bulldogs home field was the 12th straight against their
SEC rival.
   
     LEMONT, Ill. (AP) - It's Justin Rose by two shots headed into
today's second round of the PGA Tour playoff tournament outside of
Chicago. The Englishman fired an 8-under 63 yesterday at Cog Hill.
   
     INCHEON, South Korea (AP) - There's a three-way tie for the lead
after the opening round of the Champions Tour event in South Korea.
David Peoples, Michael Allen and Mark Calcavecchia
(kal-kuh-VEHK'-ee-ah) matched 6-under 66s. Mark O'Meara is a shot
back.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - Back pain has forced Novak Djokovic
(JOH'-kuh-vich) to pull out of Serbia's opening singles match
against visiting Argentina in the Davis Cup semifinals four days
after winning the U.S. Open title. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal shrugged
off the disappointment and fatigue of losing the U.S. Open final to
rout Richard Gasquet (ree-SHARD' gas-KAY') 6-3, 6-love, 6-1 and
give Spain a 1-0 lead over France in their Davis Cup semifinal.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton
Kershaw and manager Don Mattingly were ejected from the Dodgers'
3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kershaw, who earned his 19th
victory with five innings of one-hit ball, was tossed in the sixth
inning last night after his inside pitch struck Arizona's Gerardo
Parra on the right elbow.
   
     PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched their 19th
consecutive losing season, a record for a major league franchise in
North America, losing to the Cardinals 3-2 as Yadier Molina
(YAH'-dee-eer moh-LEE'-nah) hit a tiebreaking, two-run double. The
Cards are 4-1/2 games back of Atlanta in the NL wild card and 5-1/2
back of Milwaukee in the NL Central race.
   
     OAKLAND (AP) - The Detroit Tigers go for their 13th straight win
tonight in Oakland when they play the Athletics. The Tigers posted
a 6-5 win in 10 innings in Chicago yesterday to match their longest
winning streak since 1934.
   
     HOUSTON (AP) -A Roy Halladay six-hitter has made the
Philadelphia Phillies the first team to reach the playoffs this
season with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Astros. The NL East
leaders clinched at least a wild-card berth and will appear in the
postseason for the fifth straight year.
   
     ATLANTA (AP) - Police say former Washington Wizards basketball
player Javaris Crittenton will be returned to Atlanta from Los
Angeles today to face a murder charge. Authorities say Crittenton
is being returned to face charges in the death of 22-year-old
Julian Jones, a mother of four who was hit by gunfire during a
drive-by shooting. Crittenton denies involvement.

 SEATTLE (AP) - Mariano Rivera recorded his 600th save in the New
York Yankees' 3-2 win over Seattle last night. The 41-year-old
Rivera trails all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman by one and was
immediately mobbed by teammates offering hugs and congratulations
on his latest accomplishment.
   
     CHICAGO (AP) - The AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers and Justin
Verlander are both on some kind of roll. The Tigers blanked the
Chicago White Sox 5-0 for their 11th straight win -- their longest
win streak since their World Series championship season of
1968--with Verlander improving to 23-5 with his 11th straight
triumph as well.
   
     MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun homered leading off the 11th inning
and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Rockies 2-1 last night to win
their sixth straight at home over Colorado. Prince Fielder also
went deep for Milwaukee, which remained 6  1/2 games ahead of
second-place St. Louis in the NL Central with 13 to play.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - When the NBA season may start is anyone's guess
in the wake of yesterday's key labor meeting, after which both
sides claimed the other was being inflexible in its demands. No
further talks are scheduled. The salary cap structure is the major
stumbling block.
   
     MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Even with a lockout firmly in place across
the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves have still managed to land one
of the biggest free agents on the market -- veteran coach Rick
Adelman who replaces Kurt Rambis, sent packing after two seasons as
T-Wolves' coach. The 65-year-old Adelman was available because the
Houston Rockets decided to not renew his contract at the end of
last season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) is the U.S. Open
champion after the world's top-ranked player defeated second seed
Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL') 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. It's the third Grand
Slam title of the year for Djokovic, who also won the Australian
Open and Wimbledon.

MIAMI (AP) - Former Michigan quarterbacks Tom Brady and Chad
Henne (HEHN'-ee) combined to throw 933 yards in the New England
Patriots' 38-24 win over the Dolphins at Miami. Brady threw his
first regular-season interception since last October, but became
the 11th player in NFL history to throw for at least 500 yards,
finishing with 517 and four touchdowns. Henne passed for 416 yards
and two touchdowns.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chargers coach Norv Turner says kicker Nate
Kaeding is out for the year after injuring his left knee during the
season's opening kickoff. Kaeding entered the season as the most
accurate kicker in NFL history, having made 86.5 percent of his
field goal attempts in the previous seven seasons.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A person familiar with the negotiations tells
The Associated Press that pitcher Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis
Cardinals are closing in on a $21 million, two-year contract. St.
Louis has a $15 million option for next season as part of a $63.5
million, five-year contract agreed to in December 2006. The 2005 Cy
Young Award winner is 9-9 with a 3.75 ERA in 30 starts this year.

WESTON, Fla. (AP) - Police say former World Series MVP Manny
Ramirez has been arrested and charged with battery following a
domestic dispute at his Florida home. The Broward County sheriff's
office confirmed Ramirez was arrested Monday.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Nick Folk kicked a 50-yard field
goal with 27 seconds left, giving the New York Jets a 27-24
comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the final game of the
NFL's first full Sunday of action. The Cowboys held a 24-10 lead
early in the fourth quarter before they fumbled on the goal line,
suffered a blocked punt and an interception in the final minute
that cost Dallas the game.
   
     GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Cam Newton's NFL debut was as magnificent
as they come, except for the outcome as his Carolina Panthers
dropped a 28-21 loss to Arizona as Patrick Peterson returned a punt

     NEW YORK (AP) - There was a shocker in the women's final at the
U.S. Open yesterday. Ninth-seed Sam Stosur won her first Grand Slam
singles title by surprising three-time U.S. Open champion Serena
Williams 6-2, 6-3 for Williams' fourth loss in 17 major singles
finals.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) -The men's final is being held today at the U.S.
Open because of last week's rains. It matches the top two ranked
players in the world with No. 1 Novak Djokovic (YOH'-koh-vihch)
taking on No. 2 Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL') in a 4 p.m.
(Eastern time) championship match
   
     MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun singled in the go-ahead run in the
seventh and the slumping Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a
much-needed 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday
that snapped their skid at five, and kept their NL Central lead at
six games over St. Louis. The major league-leading Phillies remain
12 games ahead of Atlanta in the NL East and could wrap up their
fifth straight division title as soon as Wednesday.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - The reigning Super Bowl champs beat the
team they unseated for the title in last night's NFL opener. After
a game filled with offense, the Green Bay Packers stopped the
visiting New Orleans Saints from a yard out on the final play to
preserve a 42-34 victory.
   
     STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Brandon Weeden threw for 397 yards and
two touchdowns to Justin Blackmon in No. 9 Oklahoma State's 37-14
win over visiting Arizona. Blackmon had 128 yards on 12 receptions
to extend his NCAA record streak to 14 straight games with at least
100 yards receiving.
   
     TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Misssouri is the second member of the AP's
Top 25 to take the field this week. The 21st-ranked Tigers are on
the road to play Arizona State under the lights. Arizona State will
debut its new black uniforms and will be holding a "Black Out"
game, with all the fans expected to wear black shirts
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Top seeds Novak Djokovic (YOH'-koh-vihch)
Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) were among Thursday's winners
at the U.S. Open. So were Americans Serena Williams, Andy Roddick
and John Isner (IHZ'-nur). Roddick and Isner are scheduled to play
again this afternoon.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - All of the rain at the U.S. Open forced the
tournament to change its schedule. Organizers have pushed the men's
final to Monday for the fourth consecutive year.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - After an offseason dominated by a labor
lockout, the NFL gets attention back where it wants it to be
focused--on the field. The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay
Packers are slight favorites over the New Orleans Saints, the
champions of two seasons ago, in the NFL season-opener from Lambeau
Field tonight.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Less than 11 hours after New York completed a
rain-delayed victory, both teams were back at it with the Baltimore
Orioles squeezing out a 5-4 win over the Yankees in 11 innings. The
Orioles used up eight pitchers and the Yanks six in the finale of a
three-game set at Yankee Stadium. The teams are now in Baltimore
where they play this afternoon in a makeup of an Aug. 27 rainout
caused by Hurricane Irene.
   
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies' lead in the NL
Central is 10-1/2 games following their three-game sweep of Atlanta
and last night's 3-2 win on pinch-hitter Ross Gload's RBI single in
the ninth. The Phils' magic number for clinching their fifth
straight NL East title is 12.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Two straight days of rainouts and more rain in
the forecast have the U.S. Open tennis tournament organizers facing
a scheduling nightmare to somehow get back to a normal schedule.
Matches are scheduled to resume today at 11 a.m. Eastern time -
weather permitting.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - From Anaheim to Montreal, the world's best hockey
players are struggling to comprehend a shocking loss to their sport
after a chartered Russian plane carrying the Kontinental Hockey
League's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team crashed, killing 43 of the 45
people on board. On the plane also were several NHL veterans. The
air crash comes after the sudden offseason deaths of three other
NHL players.

 WASHINGTON (AP) -Stephen Strasburg returned to the majors by
tossing five shutout innings of two-hit ball one year and three
days after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament surgery. Strasburg
left with a 3-0 lead but the Washington Nationals bullpen promptly
blew that lead in a 7-3 loss and Strasberg was not involved in the
decision.
   
     HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - Jeff Gordon has won the rain-delayed NASCAR
race at Atlanta Motor Speedway by holding off Jimmie Johnson for
his third victory of the season and 85th of his career. There's
only one race left before the Chase for the Sprint Cup and Gordon
already had locked up a spot but his performance stamped him as a
prime contender to end Johnson's unprecedented streak of five
straight titles.
   
     JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The Jacksonville Jaguars have released
veteran quarterback David Garrard (guh-RARD'), a stunning move that
will save the franchise $9 million this season. Garrard has been
the Jags' QB since 2007 but Jacksonville is going in a different
direction with Luke McCown expected to start the opener against the
Tennessee Titans.
   
     SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has made a
change and says Tommy Rees will be the starting quarterback for
Saturday night's game at Michigan. Kelly benched Dayne Crist in
Saturday's lackluster 23-20 loss to South Florida in the
season-opener and Rees played well in the second half and was 4-0
as a starter for the Irish last season.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Two people with knowledge of the plans say NBA
players and owners will resume talks today at an undisclosed
location in New York. This session will be just the third between
top negotiators since the lockout started July 1.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -There was a close call for a perfect game in
baseball last night as White Sox rookie Zach Stewart took a perfect
game into the eighth inning and finished with a one-hitter. Chicago
completed a doubleheader sweep of the Minnesota Twins, 4-0. The
lone Minnesota hit was Danny Valencia's leadoff double in the
eighth spoiled the right-hander's bid to become the 21st rookie in
major league history to throw a no-hitter.
   
     ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mark Trumbo continued his torrid rookie
season with a two-run homer and an RBI double, Vernon Wells hit his
20th home run, and the L.A. Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3 to
move within 2 1/2 games of first place Texas in the AL West. The
Angels capitalized on Texas' 5-1 loss at Tampa Bay and moved a
season-best 13 games over .500 at 77-64.
   
     COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Nick Ferrara kicked a 32-yard field
goal with 1:39 left, Danny O'Brien threw for 348 yards and a
touchdown, and Maryland beat short-handed Miami 32-24 Monday night
in coach Randy Edsall's first game with the Terrapins. Miami was
playing its first game under Al Golden without eight suspended
players, including quarterback Jacory (juh-KOR'-ee) Harris,
linebacker Sean Spence and defensive linemen Marcus Forston and
Adewale Ojomo.
   
     HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - NASCAR is hoping to get in its Sprint Cup
race at Atlanta Motor Speedway that was postponed Sunday night
because of drenching rains in the Atlanta area. Kasey Kahne (kayn)
is the pole-sitter for this morning's scheduled race.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee)
rallied to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova (svet-LAH'-nah
kooz-NET'-so-vah) 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in a fourth round U.S. Open match.
She finished with 26 unforced errors compared to 78 for the
17th-seeded Kuznetsova, a two-time major champion.

 DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers finished a three-game sweep of
Chicago by toying with the White Sox 18-2 last night as Miguel
Cabrera homered and drove in four. Max Scherzer won his 14th game
by tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits.
   
     COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -Eighth-ranked Texas A&M opened a
season of high expectations by mauling in-state rival SMU 46-14.
Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael ran for two touchdowns apiece as
the Aggies scored 26 unanswered points to win easily.
   
     MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Geno Smith threw two first-half
touchdown passes, Tavon Austin returned a kickoff for a score and
No. 24 West Virginia beat Marshall 34-13 in a game that was stopped
early in the fourth quarter because of lightning. That was at least
the third college football game shortened by storms on the opening
weekend of the season.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Fourth-seeded Andy Murray moved into the U.S.
Open's fourth round by beating No. 25 Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4, 6-2
last night. On the women's side, 2010 runner-up Vera Zvonareva
(zvahn-uh-RAY'-vuh) reached the quarterfinals with a straight-set
win over No. 22 seed Sabine Lisicki.
   
     HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - NASCAR has postponed its race at Atlanta
Motor Speedway because of heavy rain and it will be run Tuesday
morning instead with Kasey Kahne on the pole. NASCAR said there was
no chance to get the race in today because of storms moving through
the Atlanta area.

 NEW YORK (AP) - Both top seeds cruised to easy victories last
night to reach the third round of the U.S. Open. Women's top-seed
Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) lost her serve in the first
game, then rolled off 12 of the next 13 in an easy 6-2, 6-love
victory over Arantxa (uh-RAHN'-chuh) Rus while Novak Djokovic
(YOH'-koh-vihch) won the first 14 games in a 6-love, 6-love, 6-2
victory over Argentina's Carlos Berlocq.
   
     NEW YORK (AP) - Sloane Stephens and Vania King - both ranked
outside the top 100 - upset seeded players at the U.S. Open and
that gives the United States five women in the third round, its
most since 2004. Stephens and King join Serena Williams, Christina
McHale and Irina Falconi in the third round.
   
     MILWAUKEE (AP) - Albert Pujols (POO'-hohlz) hit a grand slam and
also had another homer as the St. Louis Cardinals completed a
three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with an 8-4 win. Even
with the sweep, the Cards still trail the first-place Brewers by
7-1/2 games in the NL Central.
   
     UNDATED (AP) - The college football season opened last night
with two teams ranked in the AP Preseason Top-25, posting
impressive victories. The 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers routed UNLV
51-17 as new quarterback Russell Wilson's throwing two TDs and
running for another and 20th-ranked Mississippi State flattened
Memphis 59-14.
   
     EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The second night of college football
has the 17th-ranked Michigan State Spartans hosting Youngstown
State of the Football Championship Subdivision tonight. Michigan
State is coming off an impressive 11-win season in which it tied
for the Big Ten title, but the Spartans lost to Alabama 49-7 in
their bowl appearance.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians survived a marathon to
win their longest game of the year last night. Jack Hannahan
homered twice and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of
the 16th inning to give the Tribe a 4-3 win over Oakland.
PHOENIX (AP) - Miguel Montero hit a three-run homer for the
second straight game and the Arizona Diamondbacks won their ninth
in a row by beating the Colorado Rockies 4-2 to maintain their
six-game lead in the NL West. The Diamondbacks set a franchise
record with 12 consecutive home wins.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Federal prosecutors dropped all the
remaining charges against Barry Bonds on Wednesday, days after a
judge upheld the slugger's conviction on an obstruction of justice
count. That means Bonds won't face a new trial on accusations that
he lied to a grand jury back in 2003 when he testified that he
never knowingly received steroids or human growth hormone from
trainer Greg Anderson.
NEW YORK (AP) -Two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams has
pulled out of this year's final Grand Slam event because of a
medical condition. The 31-year-old Williams disclosed that she has
Sjogren's (SHOH'-grihns) Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that
causes fatigue and joint pain.
NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Roddick held on to avoid a first-round
upset at the U.S. Open, beating 96th-ranked Michael Russell 6-2,
6-4, 4-6, 7-5 last night. The 21st-seeded Roddick, who won the 2003
U.S. Open, had a 13-0 edge in aces in the all-American matchup.
