ATLANTA (AP) - In his first game back in Atlanta since coming
out of prison for his role in a dogfighting scheme, Philadelphia
Eagles quarterback Michael Vick left early with a neck injury and
appeared to be spitting out blood after being slammed into one of
his own linemen late in the third quarter. Backup Mike Kafka took
over for Vick and finished a touchdown drive that gave Philadelphia
a 31-21 lead, but Matt Ryan threw four TDs and the Falcons defeated
the Eagles 35-31.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Playing with a fractured rib, Tony Romo hit
Jesse Holley on a 77-yard completion on the Cowboys' first play of
overtime that set up Dan Bailey's winning 19-yard field goal, and
Dallas rallied for a 27-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
That got Romo out of the Dallas doghouse after he suffered a
fourth-quarter meltdown in a 27-24 road loss to the Jets in the
season opener.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Allen Craig hit two homers and Albert Pujols
(POO'-hohlz) also went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals improved
their playoff chances with a 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia
Phillies last night. The Cards moved within 3 1/2 games of the Atlanta
Braves in the NL wild-card chase with their ninth win in 11 games.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Justin Verlander won his 12th straight
start to improve to 24-5 by pitching the AL Central champion
Detroit Tigers over the Oakland Athletics 3-0. Verlander has the

season since Oakland's Bob Welch went 27-6 in 1990.
