GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - After an offseason dominated by a labor
lockout, the NFL gets attention back where it wants it to be
focused--on the field. The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay
Packers are slight favorites over the New Orleans Saints, the
champions of two seasons ago, in the NFL season-opener from Lambeau
Field tonight.
NEW YORK (AP) - Less than 11 hours after New York completed a
rain-delayed victory, both teams were back at it with the Baltimore
Orioles squeezing out a 5-4 win over the Yankees in 11 innings. The
Orioles used up eight pitchers and the Yanks six in the finale of a
three-game set at Yankee Stadium. The teams are now in Baltimore
where they play this afternoon in a makeup of an Aug. 27 rainout
caused by Hurricane Irene.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies' lead in the NL
Central is 10-1/2 games following their three-game sweep of Atlanta
and last night's 3-2 win on pinch-hitter Ross Gload's RBI single in
the ninth. The Phils' magic number for clinching their fifth
straight NL East title is 12.
NEW YORK (AP) - Two straight days of rainouts and more rain in
the forecast have the U.S. Open tennis tournament organizers facing
a scheduling nightmare to somehow get back to a normal schedule.
Matches are scheduled to resume today at 11 a.m. Eastern time -
weather permitting.
