KWBG Sports for September 1st

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians survived a marathon to
win their longest game of the year last night. Jack Hannahan
homered twice and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of
the 16th inning to give the Tribe a 4-3 win over Oakland.
PHOENIX (AP) - Miguel Montero hit a three-run homer for the
second straight game and the Arizona Diamondbacks won their ninth
in a row by beating the Colorado Rockies 4-2 to maintain their
six-game lead in the NL West. The Diamondbacks set a franchise
record with 12 consecutive home wins.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Federal prosecutors dropped all the
remaining charges against Barry Bonds on Wednesday, days after a
judge upheld the slugger's conviction on an obstruction of justice
count. That means Bonds won't face a new trial on accusations that
he lied to a grand jury back in 2003 when he testified that he
never knowingly received steroids or human growth hormone from
trainer Greg Anderson.
NEW YORK (AP) -Two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams has
pulled out of this year's final Grand Slam event because of a
medical condition. The 31-year-old Williams disclosed that she has
Sjogren's (SHOH'-grihns) Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that
causes fatigue and joint pain.
NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Roddick held on to avoid a first-round
upset at the U.S. Open, beating 96th-ranked Michael Russell 6-2,
6-4, 4-6, 7-5 last night. The 21st-seeded Roddick, who won the 2003
U.S. Open, had a 13-0 edge in aces in the all-American matchup.
