EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Nick Folk kicked a 50-yard field
goal with 27 seconds left, giving the New York Jets a 27-24
comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the final game of the
NFL's first full Sunday of action. The Cowboys held a 24-10 lead
early in the fourth quarter before they fumbled on the goal line,
suffered a blocked punt and an interception in the final minute
that cost Dallas the game.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Cam Newton's NFL debut was as magnificent
as they come, except for the outcome as his Carolina Panthers
dropped a 28-21 loss to Arizona as Patrick Peterson returned a punt
89 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Newton, the No. 1 draft pick,
completed 24 of 37 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns and is
the first rookie to throw for more than 400 yards in his NFL
opener.
NEW YORK (AP) - There was a shocker in the women's final at the
U.S. Open yesterday. Ninth-seed Sam Stosur won her first Grand Slam
singles title by surprising three-time U.S. Open champion Serena
Williams 6-2, 6-3 for Williams' fourth loss in 17 major singles
finals.
NEW YORK (AP) -The men's final is being held today at the U.S.
Open because of last week's rains. It matches the top two ranked
players in the world with No. 1 Novak Djokovic (YOH'-koh-vihch)
taking on No. 2 Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL') in a 4 p.m.
(Eastern time) championship match
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun singled in the go-ahead run in the
seventh and the slumping Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a
much-needed 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday
that snapped their skid at five, and kept their NL Central lead at
six games over St. Louis. The major league-leading Phillies remain
12 games ahead of Atlanta in the NL East and could wrap up their
fifth straight division title as soon as Wednesday.
