KWBG Sports for September 7th

WASHINGTON (AP) -Stephen Strasburg returned to the majors by
tossing five shutout innings of two-hit ball one year and three
days after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament surgery. Strasburg
left with a 3-0 lead but the Washington Nationals bullpen promptly
blew that lead in a 7-3 loss and Strasberg was not involved in the
decision.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - Jeff Gordon has won the rain-delayed NASCAR
race at Atlanta Motor Speedway by holding off Jimmie Johnson for
his third victory of the season and 85th of his career. There's
only one race left before the Chase for the Sprint Cup and Gordon
already had locked up a spot but his performance stamped him as a
prime contender to end Johnson's unprecedented streak of five
straight titles.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The Jacksonville Jaguars have released
veteran quarterback David Garrard (guh-RARD'), a stunning move that
will save the franchise $9 million this season. Garrard has been
the Jags' QB since 2007 but Jacksonville is going in a different
direction with Luke McCown expected to start the opener against the
Tennessee Titans.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has made a
change and says Tommy Rees will be the starting quarterback for
Saturday night's game at Michigan. Kelly benched Dayne Crist in
Saturday's lackluster 23-20 loss to South Florida in the
season-opener and Rees played well in the second half and was 4-0
as a starter for the Irish last season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Two people with knowledge of the plans say NBA
players and owners will resume talks today at an undisclosed
location in New York. This session will be just the third between
top negotiators since the lockout started July 1.
