SEATTLE (AP) - Mariano Rivera recorded his 600th save in the New
York Yankees' 3-2 win over Seattle last night. The 41-year-old
Rivera trails all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman by one and was
immediately mobbed by teammates offering hugs and congratulations
on his latest accomplishment.
CHICAGO (AP) - The AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers and Justin
Verlander are both on some kind of roll. The Tigers blanked the
Chicago White Sox 5-0 for their 11th straight win -- their longest
win streak since their World Series championship season of
1968--with Verlander improving to 23-5 with his 11th straight
triumph as well.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun homered leading off the 11th inning
and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Rockies 2-1 last night to win
their sixth straight at home over Colorado. Prince Fielder also
went deep for Milwaukee, which remained 6 1/2 games ahead of
second-place St. Louis in the NL Central with 13 to play.
NEW YORK (AP) - When the NBA season may start is anyone's guess
in the wake of yesterday's key labor meeting, after which both
sides claimed the other was being inflexible in its demands. No
further talks are scheduled. The salary cap structure is the major
stumbling block.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Even with a lockout firmly in place across
the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves have still managed to land one
of the biggest free agents on the market -- veteran coach Rick
Adelman who replaces Kurt Rambis, sent packing after two seasons as
T-Wolves' coach. The 65-year-old Adelman was available because the
Houston Rockets decided to not renew his contract at the end of
last season.
