KWBG Sports for September 24th

NEW YORK (AP) - B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford drove in two runs
each in a seven-run sixth inning mostly off of CC Sabathia
(suh-BA'-three-uh) as Tampa Bay topped the Yankees 10-3 win over
the Yankees. The victory earns the Rays a split of the four-game
series and leaves them just a half-game back of New York for first
in the American League East.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Dallas Braden stopped Texas on one hit
over eight innings as Oakland topped the Rangers 5-0. The loss kept
the Rangers' magic number for clinching the AL West title at four.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jacory (juh-KOR'-ee) Harris threw for 248
yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 19 Miami to a 31-3 win over
Pittsburgh in college football. The Hurricanes' defense held Dion
Lewis to 41 yards on 12 carries.

ATLANTA (AP) - Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Geoff Ogilvy shot
6-under 64's to share the lead after the first round of the
season-ending Tour Championship. Jim Furyk (FYOOR'-ihk) is just a
shot off the pace, while Phil Mickelson is in a group at 1-under.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The NCAA has placed Chattanooga on
probation for two years for major violations in its athletics
program. Among the infractions were failing to monitor phone calls
and text messages by coaches to recruits.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Miguel Tejada's (teh-HAH'-duhz) 300th career
home run helped list San Diego over the Dodgers 3-1 and back into
first place in the National League West. The Padres are a half-game
in front of the Giants who were shutout by the Cubs 2-0.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Raul Ibanez' (ee-BAHN'-yehz) rbi double in
the eighth was the difference as Philadelphia edged Atlanta 1-0 for
the Phillies tenth straight win. Phillies starter Roy Oswalt
(OHZ'-walt) locked up in a pitcher's duel with the Braves Tommy
Hanson but neither figured in the decision as Philadelphia
increased its NL East lead to six games over Atlanta.

TORONTO (AP) - Seattle's Jose Lopez flexed his muscles with
three home runs in a 6-3 win over Toronto. Lopez hit a solo shot
off starter Kyle Drabek in the second inning, led off the sixth
with a blast off reliever Brian Tallet, and connected again off
reliever Shawn Camp in the eighth.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Jets receiver Braylon Edwards
apologized to his teammates, coaches, family and fans a day after
he was arrested for drunken driving. The team has already told
Edwards he won't start against Miami Sunday and he could still face
punishment from the NFL.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The NCAA has suspended North Carolina
defensive back Kendric Burney six games and safety Deunta Williams
four games for receiving improper benefits. Both players must repay
benefits to become eligible, though the school plans to appeal the
length of the suspensions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay became Philadelphia's first
20-game winner in 28 years in a 5-2 win over Atlanta. The Phillies
ninth straight win widens their NL East lead over the second-place
Braves to five games.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton found out
he has two broken ribs after undergoing tests Tuesday, but hopes to
be back in the lineup before the end of the season. Hamilton is
leading the majors with a .361 batting average, but has been
sidelined since crashing into a wall Sept. 4 in Minnesota.

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez is scheduled to
face contempt charges that he violated a judge's order not to
contact his girlfriend. Rodriguez is to be arraigned on Wednesday
on charges that he violated an order of protection by sending text
messages to his girlfriend.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio is
out of the hospital, less than three days after having a mild heart
attack. The athletic department confirmed that Dantonio was
released around 3 p.m. Tuesday. He was hospitalized shortly after
the Spartans beat Notre Dame 34-31 in overtime Saturday night on a
fake field goal that worked for a touchdown.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City center Nenad Krstic (neh-NAD'
KRIH'-stihch) is recovering from surgery to repair a broken finger
on his right hand, but is expected to be ready for the Thunder's
season opener. Krstic was injured in the final game of this year's
world championship in Istanbul.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Denver receiver Kenny McKinley was found
dead in his apartment Monday of an apparent suicide. The 23-year
old was on season-ending injured reserve due to knee problems.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets cornerback Darrelle
Revis (deh-REHL' REE'-vihs) has a strained left hamstring that
could sideline him for a few weeks. Even though Revis wouldn't rule
himself out of Sunday's game against Miami, coach Rex Ryan says the
team is going to play it safe with the All-Pro.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The 49ers retired Hall of Famer Jerry
Rice's No. 80 at halftime of their Monday night football game
against New Orleans. Rice spent 16 of his 21 NFL seasons with San
Francisco and holds virtually every significant receiving record in
the NFL.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Danny Valencia and Michael Cuddyer
(kuh-DY'-ur) hit home runs to help Minnesota move closer to the
American League Central title with a 9-3 win over Cleveland. The
Twins can clinch the division Tuesday with another win over the
Indians and a White Sox loss at Oakland.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels allowed a run on six hits in
eight innings to lead Philadelphia to a 3-1 win over Atlanta in a
battle of NL East contenders. The Phillies' eighth straight victory
gave them a four-game lead over the Braves.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Manning Matchup II was no contest. Four-time
league MVP Peyton Manning threw for three touchdowns, leading the
Indianapolis Colts to a surprisingly easy 38-14 victory over kid
brother Eli Manning and the New York Giants. Both teams are 1-1.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - New England wide receiver Randy
Moss became the fourth player in NFL history to reach 150 career
touchdowns with a jaw-dropping, one-handed 34-yard catch in the
Patriots' 28-14 loss to the New York Jets. Moss has 149 receiving
touchdowns and another on a punt return. Hall of Famer Jerry Rice
tops the list with 208 TDs.

CHICAGO (AP) - Detroit's Jim Leyland became the 18th manager to
work 3,000 major league games when the Tigers wrapped up their
weekend series against Chicago with a 9-7, 11-inning victory over
the White Sox. Eleven of the first 17 managers to reach the mark
are in the Hall of Fame, and the other three who are still active -
Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre - likely will get there.

UNDATED (AP) - The two top teams in both the AL and NL East open
head-to-head matchups tonight. The New York Yankees begin their
four-game set against visiting Tampa Bay holding a half-game lead
over the Rays, while Philadelphia hosts an Atlanta Braves club that
starts the three-game series three games back of the Phillies.

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - Clint Bowyer (BOY'-ur) ended an 88-race
winless drought by taking the checkered flag at New Hampshire Motor
Speedway in the first of 10 events that comprise NASCAR's Chase for
the championship. Bowyer leapfrogs from last to second in the title
hunt, 35 points behind second-place finisher Denny Hamlin.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco is back in first place in the
National League West. The Giants took over the top spot last night
with a 10-2 win over the Dodgers, while San Diego was beaten by St.
Louis 4-0. The Giants top the Padres by a half game.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Minnesota Twins completed a big three-game
sweep of the Chicago White Sox last night. Delmon Young homered and
Carl Pavano got his 17th win as the Twins beat the Sox 8-5.
Minnesota leads the Sox by nine games with 16 left to be played.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Reggie Bush says nobody should read into
his decision to relinquish his Heisman Trophy. The Saints running
back says his returning of the trophy is not an admission of guilt.
He says his decision stemmed from his respect for the Heisman
Trophy Trust and all other Heisman winners.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Hall of Famer Jim Brown has confirmed that he
will not attend this Sunday's Cleveland Browns ring of honor
ceremony. The club is going to honor its 16 Hall of Fame members
and Brown is unhappy with how he thinks he has been treated by
Cleveland president Mike Holmgren.

CHICAGO (AP) - Joel Quenneville (KWEHN'-vihl) has been rewarded
by the Chicago Blackhawks for leading them to the Stanley Cup
championship. The coach has been given a three-year contract
extension through the 2013-14 season.

UNDATED (AP) - San Francisco nipped the L.A. Dodgers 2-1 for its
10th win in 14 games and is just a half-game back of San Diego in
the NL West race and a half-game behind wild-card leader Atlanta.
The Padres dropped a 9-6 decision to Colorado and the Braves got
beat 4-2 by Washington.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay reclaimed first place in
the AL East with a 4-3 victory over the now second-place Yankees.
Dan Johnson belted a pair of two-run home runs to help the Rays
claim a series victory over the Yanks, who fall a half-game off the
pace.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds bring
an eight-game lead over St. Louis into this afternoon's outing
against visiting Arizona. It's the only matinee on a light major
league schedule that includes four National League games and two
American League contests.

NEW YORK (AP) - The folks responsible for administering the top
individual award in college sports say now that Reggie Bush has
forfeited the Heisman Trophy he won as a star running back at
Southern California, the 2005 award will remain vacant. There had
been some sentiment that the trophy be given to Vince Young. The
former Texas quarterback was the runner-up to Bush in that year's
voting.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - On Friday, an NCAA committee will hear an
appeal by A.J. Green via conference call, opening the possibility
that the Georgia receiver could play Saturday when the Bulldogs
face No. 12 Arkansas in a crucial SEC game. Green, who sat out
Georgia's opening two games, is hoping for a reduction of the
four-game suspension he was handed for selling an Independence Bowl
jersey for $1,000 to someone deemed to be an agent by the NCAA.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The New York Yankees regained a
half-game lead in the American League East with a 7-6 win in 10
innings over second-place Tampa Bay. Jorge Posada (HOR'-hay
poh-SAH'-dah) led off the 10th inning with a homer for the Yanks,
who go for the series victory tonight at Tropicana Field in the
finale of the three-game set.

UNDATED (AP) - Pinch-hitter Matt Stairs hit a two-run homer in
the eighth and the San Diego Padres hung on to beat the Colorado
Rockies 7-6. Combined with San Francisco's 1-0 loss to the L.A.
Dodgers, that gives the Padres a game and a-half lead in the NL
West.

UNDATED (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies increased their lead to
two games over Atlanta in the NL East after nipping Florida 2-1
behind a season-high 13 strikeouts by Cole Hamels. Meanwhile, the
Braves were dropping a 6-0 decision to last-place Washington.

NEW YORK (AP) - The 2001 Major League Baseball schedule is out
with five openers set for Thursday March 31, although one of them
is expected to be moved up to the night of March 30. One of the
interleague highlights is the Chicago Cubs' three-game series in
Boston starting May 20, the Cubs' first visit to Fenway Park since
the 1918 World Series.

NEW YORK (AP) - After Southern California was hit with heavy
NCAA sanctions after it determined that Reggie Bush and his family
received hundreds of thousands of dollars of gifts while in
college, Bush has decided to return the 2005 Heisman Trophy. He's
the first player in the 75-year history of the Heisman to return
the trophy.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida receiver Chris Rainey is
scheduled for a court appearance this morning after being charged
with aggravated stalking. According to Gainesville Police, Rainey
sent a woman he dated on and off the last three years a text
message that read, "Time to die," after leaving her home Monday
night. Rainey has six receptions and a touchdown this season.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Matt Garza faces Ivan Nova tonight
when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Yankees in game two of their
series at Tropicana Field. The Rays won the opener last night 1-0
on Reid Brignac's (BRIHN'-yaks) 11th-inning, walk-off homer. The
victory gave the Rays a half-game lead over New York in the AL
East.

UNDATED (AP) - The San Diego Padres head into tonight's game at
Colorado holding a half-game lead over San Francisco in the NL
West. The Rockies, who had their 10-game winning streak snapped
Monday night, are only 2 1/2 games behind the Padres. The Giants,
who were idle last night, host Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez is due in court
today in New York City on assault charges. He is accused of
attacking his girlfriend's father outside a family lounge at Citi
Field. He was arrested after the Mets lost to Colorado on Aug. 11.

SEATTLE (AP) - The best-of-five WNBA Finals continue tonight
with the Seattle Storm holding a 1-0 lead over the Atlanta Dream.
The Storm won the opener Sunday on Sue Bird's 16-foot jumper in the
game's final moments.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - The Washington Redskins opened the Mike
Shanahan-Donovan McNabb era with a 13-7 win over the mistake-prone
Dallas Cowboys. The game ended when Tony Romo found Roy Williams
open for an apparent game-winning touchdown, but Alex Barron was
called for holding, the 12th and most costly penalty on the
Cowboys.

SEATTLE (AP) - Pete Carroll returned to the NFL for the first
time in 11 years and coached the Seattle Seahawks to a surprisingly
easy 31-6 win over San Francisco. Matt Hasselbeck threw for two
touchdowns and ran for another as the Seahawks gave new coach
Carroll a winning start after he left Southern California to return
to the NFL.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) looked every bit a
two-time Cy Young Award winner and had a two-run single as the San
Francisco Giants roughed up San Diego ace Mat Latos (LAY'-tohs),
6-1. The Giants won three of four in San Diego over the weekend and
cut the struggling Padres' lead to less than one percentage point
atop the NL West.

DENVER (AP) - You can't count out the torrid Colorado Rockies,
who've won 10 in a row to climb within a game and a-half of the top
spot in the NL West. Pinch-hitter Jason Giambi (jee-AHM'-bee)
connected for a two-run ninth-inning homer of the Rockies' 4-2 win
over Arizona in advance of their three-game series against San
Diego starting at Coors Field tonight.

NEW YORK (AP) - For the third straight year, the U.S. Open will
finish a day later than planned. A rainout yesterday postponed the
scheduled men's final between top-seeded Rafael Nadal and third
seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) until today when
they'll try again at 4 p.m. (Eastern time).

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Saints have opened the NFL
regular season with a 14-9 win over Minnesota as Drew Brees (breez)
passed for 237 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings led 9-7 until
Pierre Thomas scored on a one-yard run midway through the third
quarter. Brett Favre (fahrv) threw an interception and finished
with 171 passing yards, just 44 yards in the second half.

BOSTON (AP) - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady
accepted a four-year contract extension Thursday, hours after he
was involved in a two-car accident. Two people with knowledge of
the deal says Brady would get a guaranteed $48.5 million and could
receive $72 million through the length of the new package, making
him the highest paid player in the NFL. Brady was unhurt in his
morning collision and was able to practice later on Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) - It will be top seed Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL')
against No. 12 Mikhail Youzhny (YOOZ'-nee) in the U.S. Open men's
semifinals tomorrow at the National Tennis Center. Nadal was a 7-5,
6-3, 6-4 winner over No. 8 Fernando Verdasco last night after
Youzhny outlasted Stanislas Wawrinka (wah-RINK'-uh) 3-6, 7-6 (7),
3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Second seed Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic
(JOH'-koh-vihch) will square off in the other men's semifinal.

UNDATED (AP) - Just one game separates the first-place San Diego
Padres from the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.
Homers by Aubrey Huff, Juan Uribe (yoo-REE'-bay), Buster Posey and
Pat Burrell (BUR'-ul) led the Giants to a 7-3 win against San
Diego. Atlanta lost to St. Louis 11-4, leaving the Braves one game
behind East-leading Philadelphia and pushing the Cardinals within
five games of the Central-leading Cincinnati Reds.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA says the University of Dayton will
host all four first-round games of the newly expanded men's
basketball tournament next March. Two games will match the
tournament's lowest seeds, with the winners advancing as No. 16
seeds to play a top seed. The other two games will match the last
four at-large qualifiers.

BOSTON (AP) - The New England Patriots confirm that quarterback Tom Brady was involved in a car accident this morning in Boston but is OK and expected to be at Gillette Stadium today to continue preparing for this week's season opener. Fire officials say a passenger in one vehicle was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The party starts early in New Orleans, where the Super Bowl champion Saints and Minnesota Vikings kick off the 2010 NFL season this evening. It's a rematch of last year's NFC championship game that the Saints won 31-28 in overtime.

UNDATED (AP) - San Diego opened a little breathing room over San Francisco in the NL West entering today's opener of a four-game series between the division rivals in Southern California. The Padres blanked the L.A. Dodgers 4-zip last night, while the Giants absorbed a 3-1 loss at Arizona, giving San Diego a two-game advantage in the standings.

DETROIT (AP) - The White Sox are getting ready to take on the Tigers in the only afternoon start on a two-game American League schedule. Last night's 5-1 loss at Detroit was Chicago's second straight and dropped them 5 1/2 games behind the AL Central-leading Twins, who beat Kansas City 4-3 for their sixth straight win. Minnesota is off today.

NEW YORK (AP) - Five-time champion Roger Federer and women's top-seed Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) posted wins on a windy night at the U.S. Open and are through to the semifinals. There are two men's quarterfinals on today's slate at Flushing Meadows, with No. 12 Mikhail Youzhny (YOOS'-nee) facing 25th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka (vah-VINK'-ah) this afternoon and top-seeded Rafael Nadal playing No. 8 Fernando Verdasco under the lights.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - All-time career saves leader Trevor Hoffman
earned his 600th save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning in the
Milwaukee Brewers' 4-2 win over St. Louis. Before a roaring crowd
at Miller Park, the 42-year-old Hoffman got a double play and a
groundout in the ninth before being mobbed by his teammates and
family after the historic save.

PHOENIX (AP) - Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) struck out 11, three
San Francisco players homered and the Giants beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks 6-3 to keep up the pressure on San Diego in the NL
West. The Padres remained one game ahead of the Giants by nipping
the L.A. Dodgers 2-1.

UNDATED (AP) - There's a new leader in the National League East
where the two-time defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies have
overtaken the Atlanta Braves by a half-game. The Phils held off
Florida 8-7 while the Braves were dropping a 5-0 decision to the
last-place Pittsburgh Pirates.

MIAMI (AP) - Bill Parcells is turning over control of the Miami
Dolphins to general manager Jeff Ireland but will retain a role as
a daily consultant. The Dolphins say the change is part of a
long-range plan put in place when the Parcells regime took over at
the end of the 2007 season.

NEW YORK (AP) - U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin says picking
world No. 1-ranked Tiger Woods as one of his four captain's picks
for the Ryder Cup in three weeks was a no-brainer. Pavin also chose
a pair of major champions, Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson, and
21-year-old Rickie Fowler, who will be the youngest American Ryder
Cup player since Woods in 1997.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres ended their 10-game losing
streak by beating the L.A. Dodgers 4-2 to retain their one-game
lead over San Francisco in the NL West. Nick Hundley homered and
drove in two runs for the Padres, who won for the first time since
Aug. 25.

NEW YORK (AP) - Five-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer beat
13th-seeded Jurgen (YUR'-gihn) Melzer of Austria 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to
reach the quarterfinals at a 26th Grand Slam tournament in a row.
Next up for the second-seeded Federer is No. 5 Robin Soderling, the
man who upset Federer in this year's French Open quarterfinals.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Third-ranked Boise State passed what might
be the toughest test on its schedule by rallying past 10th-ranked
Virginia Tech, 33-30. Kellen Moore completed 23 of 38 passes for
three TDs and hit Austin Pettis with a 13-yard touchdown pass with
1:09 left for the go-ahead score in Boise State's 15th straight
victory.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets cornerback Darrelle
Revis (REE'-vihs) is due to practice today after signing a
lucrative four-year deal reportedly worth at least $46 million,
with $32 million guaranteed. Revis says he'll be ready to play in
the season opener against Baltimore.

NORTON, Mass. (AP) - Charley Hoffman earned his first PGA Tour
victory in three seasons by winning the Deutsche (DOY'-chuh) Bank
Championship, the second of the four events that comprise the FedEx
Cup. Hoffman moved up 57 spots to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings.

UNDATED (AP) - The San Francisco Giants are within a game of San
Diego for first place in the National League West after the Padres
suffered their 10th consecutive loss. Troy Tulowitzki
(too-loh-WITS'-kee) drove in two runs and Melvin Mora singled home
the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning as Colorado downed San
Diego 4-2. Jonathan Sanchez allowed just three hits in seven
innings to lead the Giants past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0.

UNDATED (AP) - Atlanta's lead in the National League East
remains a game over Philadelphia after the Braves and Phillies
lost. Atlanta erased a 6-0 deficit before pinch-hitter Scott
Cousins poked a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th to
lift the Marlins past the Braves 7-6. Prince Fielder smacked a
three-run homer in the first inning to put Milwaukee ahead to stay
in a 6-2 triumph against the Phillies.

NEW YORK (AP) - Darrelle Revis (dah-REHL' REE'-vihs) and the New
York Jets have agreed to a new contract, ending the All-Pro

HONOLULU (AP) - The Lane Kiffin coaching era at Southern
California opened with the 14th-ranked Trojans posting a
high-scoring 49-36 victory at Hawaii last night. Trojans QB Matt
Barkley completed 18 of 23 passes for 257 yards and five
touchdowns, including four in the first half.

ATLANTA (AP) - Parris Lee scored the first touchdown in Georgia
State history, Drew Little threw a pair of scoring passes and the
Panthers won their inaugural game by beating Shorter 41-7 before
30,237 at the Georgia Dome last night. The game marked the return
to coaching for 67-year-old Bill Curry, who had not been on the
sideline since being forced out by Kentucky in 1996.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') will

DENVER (AP) - Chase Utley drove in six runs and hit a grand slam
to cap a nine-run seventh inning last night as the Philadelphia
Phillies overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies
12-11. The Phillies moved within two games of NL East-leading
Atlanta, which dropped a 4-2 decision to the New York Mets.

season action. Second-ranked Ohio State is home against Marshall,

15th-ranked Pittsburgh gets an early test by traveling two time

UNDATED (AP) - It'll be a new-look 12-team Big Ten operating out
of two divisions with a championship game starting in the 2011
season. Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and
Northwestern will make up one division while Ohio State, Penn
State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana are in the other.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco's Tim Lincecum
(LINZ'-ih-kuhm) outdueled Colorado fireballer Ubaldo Jimenez

five-game losing streak as the Giants nipped the Rockies 2-1.
Jimenez was denied a Rockies-record 18th victory for his fifth

CLEVELAND (AP) - Manny Ramirez got a hit in his fourth at-bat
with the Chicago White Sox in their 6-4 win over Cleveland.
Ramirez, who was batting fifth as a DH in the White Sox lineup, got
hit by a pitch in the ninth inning right after Paul Konerko hit a
go-ahead three-run home run.

NEW YORK (AP) - Last night's ouster of ninth-seed Andy Roddick,
the 2003 U.S. Open champion, leaves Roger Federer as the only past
champion still alive at the U.S. Open. Roddick lost to 44th-ranked

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram will
miss Alabama's season opener against San Jose State Saturday after
injuring his left knee during practice. Coach Nick Saban said in a
statement that the star tailback had an arthroscopic procedure
Tuesday and should make a full recovery in a "relatively short
time."

UNDATED (AP) - Minnesota wide receiver Sidney Rice will be
ineligible to play in the first six games of the regular season
after being put on the physically unable to perform list following
hip surgery last week. He's expected to need at least two months of
recovery.

MIAMI (AP) - Washington Nationals rookie ace Stephen Strasburg
will have Tommy John surgery on Friday to rebuild his injured right
elbow. Strasburg tore a ligament while pitching Aug. 21 in
Philadelphia after going 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in
68 innings.

PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU says it will go independent in football
while joining the West Coast Conference in all other sports in the
2011-2012 school year. The Cougars had an agreement to join the
Western Athletic Conference in everything but football earlier this
month, but that fell apart when the Mountain West Conference
invited Nevada and Fresno State to leave the WAC for the MWC.
