SANTA CLARA, Calif. San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore
has accepted a three-year contract extension through 2014,
according to one of his agents. The package is worth $21 million,
with $13.5 guaranteed. Gore ran for 853 yards in six games last
season and needs 931 yards to become the team's all-time leading
rusher.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - The NCAA has ruled that eight Miami
players including quarterback Jacory (jah-KOHR'-ee) Harris must sit
out games and repay benefits in order to play for the Hurricanes
again. Harris and four other players must sit out one game, Olivier
Vernon will miss six games, and Ray Ray Armstrong and Dyron Dye
will be out for four games. The suspensions are largely the result
of allegations made by former booster Nevin Shapiro to Yahoo
Sports.
UNDATED (AP) - Texas A&M is denying a New York Times report that
says the Aggies have sent a letter to Missouri Chancellor and Big
12 board chairman Brady Deaton informing him they were leaving the
conference. The Aggies have expressed interest in the SEC and
formally told Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe last week that they are
exploring their options and asked for the conference to outline the
process if they decide to leave.
BOSTON (AP) - CC Sabathia (suh-BATH'-ee-uh) worked six innings
and Francisco Cervelli hit a solo homer as the New York Yankees won
5-2 at Boston to pull within a half-game of the AL East-leading Red
Sox. Sabathia gave up 10 hits but only two runs while striking out
10. Eric Chavez had two RBIs to help the Yankees beat the Bosox for
only the third time in 13 tries this season.
NEW YORK (AP) - None of this year's Grand Slam women's singles
champions are still alive at the U.S. Open after French Open winner
Li Na (lee nah) was beaten by 53rd-ranked Simona Halep 6-2, 7-5. No
1. seeds Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) and Novak Djokovic
(NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) advanced to the second round without
dropping a set. Other winners in the men's bracket include second
seed Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL'), fifth seed David Ferrer and No. 11
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (joh-WIHL'-freed SAHN'-gah).

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback
Michael Vick have agreed to a six-year contract. A source familiar
with the contract says it's worth a guaranteed $40 million and can
pay out as much as $100 million, making Vick one of the NFL's
highest-paid players once again. Vick was named the NFC's starting
quarterback in the Pro Bowl last season and was the league's
comeback player of the year.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton
Manning practiced with the team yesterday for the first time since
undergoing neck surgery four months ago. The Colts activated the
four-time NFL Most Valuable player from the physically unable to
perform list on Monday, although Manning still doesn't know if
he'll be healthy enough to play in the season opener. Manning has
started 227 consecutive games, including playoffs, and says he
won't play just to keep the streak intact.
NEW YORK (AP) - Third seed Roger Federer and No. 8 Mardy Fish
were among the first-round winners at the U.S. Open yesterday.
Winners on the women's side include third seed Maria Sharapova and
unseeded Venus Williams, but No. 5 Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-uh-vuh)
became the first reigning Wimbledon champ to lose in the opening
round of the Open.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Associated Press has learned that the lead
negotiators for the NBA owners and players will meet tomorrow for
just the second time since the lockout began. The sides last met
Aug. 1, exactly one month after the lockout was imposed. The sides
remain far apart on numerous financial issues, and commissioner
David Stern was disappointed by the players' position and has said
there must be progress by Labor Day.
SANTA ANA, Calif. Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton has been
arrested in Southern California to face a murder charge in an
Atlanta shooting. An FBI spokeswoman said Crittenton was taken into
custody at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in
for a flight to Atlanta. Authorities were trying to determine
whether Crittenton will make an initial appearance in federal
court, or be taken directly to Atlanta to face state charges there.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Curtis Granderson homered twice to take over
the major league lead with 38, rookie Ivan Nova won his 10th
straight decision, and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore
Orioles 8-3 last night for a split of a day-night doubleheader.
Granderson moved past Jose Bautista, who has 37 homers, and assumed
the major league lead in RBIs with 107.
PHOENIX (AP) - Ian Kennedy became the National League's first
17-game winner by pitching the Arizona Diamondbacks past the San
Diego Padres 6-1 for their sixth straight win. Collin Cowgill hit
his first career homer during a four-hit game as the D-Backs
stretched their National League West lead to four games over San
Francisco.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The defending World Series champion Giants
fell in extra innings. Matt Downs delivered a go-ahead single with
one out in the 11th inning and the Houston Astros beat the Giants
4-3 to salvage a four-game split at AT&T Park.
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) - Pole-sitter Will Power held off a furious
charge from teammate Helio Castroneves (EHL'-ee-oh
kas-troh-NEH'-vehz) over the final seven laps following a late
restart to become the first two-time winner at the Indy Grand Prix
of Sonoma. Power trails Dario Franchitti (DA'-ree-oh fran-KEE'-tee)
by 26 points with four races to go on the IndyCar circuit.
NEW YORK (AP) - The U.S. Tennis Association says the site of the
U.S. Open has "minimal damage" from Tropical Storm Irene and the
Grand Slam tournament will begin on most courts as scheduled at 11
a.m. Monday. The start of play on the main court, Arthur Ashe
Stadium, is being delayed by two hours until 1 p.m. (Eastern time).

UNDATED (AP) - The New York Yankees are the first team in major
league history to hit three grand slams in a game. Robinson Cano
(kuh-NOH'), Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson connected in the
Yanks' 22-9 drubbing of Oakland, an offensive display that Yankee
manager Joe Girardi called "amazing." The Yanks needed all that
power to stay one game back of Boston, which still leads the AL
East after beating Texas 6-0 last night.
BALTIMORE (AP) -The Maryland medical examiner has ruled former
Cy Young award winner Mike Flanagan died of a self-inflicted
shotgun wound to the head on Wednesday. A police investigation
revealed that the 59-year-old pitcher was upset about financial
issues. He left no note.
UNDATED (AP) - Jim Thome (TOH'-mee) has accepted a trade to the
Cleveland Indians from the Minnesota Twins. The Indians are hoping
their career leader in home runs can help them catch first-place
Detroit in the AL Central.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Miami has determined that eight
football players, including quarterback Jacory (juh-KOR'-ee)
Harris, are believed to have committed NCAA violations by
associating with booster Nevin Shapiro and have been declared
ineligible. That's according to a person with knowledge of the
process.
UNDATED (AP) - Hurricane Irene is already leaving its mark on
the sports world even before coming ashore. Professional baseball
games, the NFL, tennis matches and MLS games are being rescheduled
as the Hurricane approaches the East Coast.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Friends, teammates and colleagues are
remembering 1979 American League Cy Young Award winner Mike
Flanagan as a savvy left-hander who got the most out of his talent
while winning 167 games during his 18-year major league career,
mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. Former Oriole great Cal Ripken
Jr. says Flanagan, who was found dead at his suburban Baltimore
home yesterday at 59, "will be sorely missed."
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jered Weaver, the American League leader
in earned run average, pitched seven shutout innings in the L.A.
Angels' 8-0 win over the Chicago White Sox last night. Weaver
struck out eight while raising his record to 15-6.
UNDATED (AP) - The Boston Red Sox trounced the defending
American League champion Texas Rangers 13-2 and took over sole
possession of first place in the AL East by one game of the New
York Yankees. The Yanks dropped a 6-4 loss to Oakland in 10 innings
as Coco Crisp homered twice and drove in five runs.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis Colts are bringing one
veteran quarterback out of retirement. The Colts agreed to terms on
a one-year deal with Kerry Collins, making the 16-year NFL vet the
likely starter in case Peyton Manning hasn't completely recovered
from offseason neck surgery when the season opens Sept. 11.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Danica Patrick has called a news
conference today during which she's expected to announce her 2012
move to NASCAR. The Associated Press reported earlier this month
that Patrick was finalizing a deal to drive fulltime for JR
Motorsports in the second-tier Nationwide Series and hopes to race
a limited schedule of elite Sprint Cup Series races for
Stewart-Haas Racing.

UNDATED (AP) - The National League picked up two 16-game winners
last night. In Washington, Arizona's Ian Kennedy blanked the
Nationals 2-0 to up his mark to 16-and-4, while in St. Louis
Clayton Kershaw notched his 16th victory against five defeats in a
13-2 drubbing of the Cardinals.
NEW YORK (AP) - New York's CC Sabathia (suh-BATH'-ee-uh) can
become an 18-game winner with a victory tonight. The Yankees are
playing host to the Oakland Athletics.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat
Summitt went public yesterday with the news that she has been
diagnosed with early onset dementia. The 59-year old says she will
coach the Lady Vols this season but admits she may have some
"limitations."
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Latrett Scott has stepped down as football
coach at the University of Richmond. The move comes after he was
arrested for driving while intoxicated. With less than two weeks
until the start of the season, offensive coordinator Wayne Lineburg
has taken over as interim head coach for the season.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - In an attempt to work things out,
Tennessee running back Chris Johnson is meeting with the Titans'
general manager today. The three-time pro bowler has refused to
report to training camp because he wants a new contract.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - C.J. Wilson threw 6 2-3 scoreless
innings allowing just four singles for his 13th victory as Texas
blanked Boston 4-0. Mike Napoli hit a three-run homer off of Boston
starter Erik Bedard (beh-DARD') who is 0-2 in his four starts for
the Red Sox since being acquired from Seattle last month
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Doumit (DOH'-miht) homered and drove in
two runs as the Pittsburgh ended more than a year of futility
against Milwaukee with a 9-2 win in the second game of a
doubleheader. The Brewers took the opener 8-1 for their 13th
straight victory over Pittsburgh.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jacoby Ellsbury likely will return to
Boston's lineup tonight against Texas and designated hitter David
Ortiz could also play in the series with the Rangers. Ellsbury has
been out of the starting lineup for three games since being hit in
the back with a pitch. Ortiz hasn't played since last Tuesday
because of bursitis in his right heel.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Rams have cut long snapper Chris
Massey who was the longest tenured player on the roster. The
32-year-old was a seventh-round draft pick in 2002. He lost out to
rookie Jake McQuaide.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt will
meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') to discuss his
arrests during the lockout, and he's praying he doesn't get
suspended. Britt made lots of headlines during the NFL lockout with
two arrests in New Jersey, and he also surrendered himself on two
arrest warrants in Tennessee. The 2009 first-round draft pick out
of Rutgers has had seven incidents with police since being drafted.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Police interviewed witnesses and were
searching for suspects after two men were shot and wounded
following a San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders preseason game
Saturday night at Candlestick Park. Calling the attack "completely
unacceptable," the NFL and the mayors of the two cities jointly
called for an end to "intimidation" and acts of violence at
sporting events.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres retired all-time saves
leader Trevor Hoffman's uniform No. 51, then went out and played
like champs. The Padres climbed out of last place in the NL West
and finished a four-game sweep of Florida with a 4-3 walkoff
victory to sweep the seven-game season series from the Marlins.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Three-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey
Calvin Borel (buh-REHL') has been arrested and released on a $100
bond on a drunken driving charge in Indiana. Borel won the Kentucky
Derby aboard Super Saver in 2010, Mine that Bird in 2009 and Street
Sense in 2007.
CINCINNATI (AP) - Maria Sharapova rallied to beat Jelena
Jankovic 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the finals of the Western & Southern
Open. On the men's side, Novak Djokovic's remarkable winning streak
ended with a grimace, stopped by a sore shoulder that forced him to
retire in the second set, giving Andy Murray a 6-4, 3-love win in
the finals
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - Kyle Busch is now a four-time winner this
season on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit after taking the
green-white checkered flat at Michigan International Speedway for
his 23rd career Sprint Cup victory. That pulls him even with
brother Kurt in career victories.

DETROIT (AP) - Cleveland doubled up the Chicago White Sox 4-2 as
Matt LaPorta hit a two-run homer for the Indians, who pulled within
1 1-2 games of idle Detroit for the division lead. The Tribe opens
a three-game series in Detroit tonight.
ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves have opened a six-game lead
over San Francisco in the National League wild card chase. The
Braves blanked the Giants 1-0 last night to take three of four from
the defending World Series champions as Mike Minor and three
relievers combined on a five-hit shutout.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Yankees manager Joe Girardi says the earliest
Alex Rodriguez will come off the disabled list and be able to play
for the New York Yankees is Saturday night against Minnesota. A-Rod
is coming off surgery July 11 to repair torn meniscus cartilage in
his right knee.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - The embattled University of Miami
football program is under an NCAA investigation after claims from a
former booster that he provided players with prostitutes, cars and
other illegal gifts from 2002 to 2010. But Canes' athletic director
Shawn Eichorst broke his silence yesterday and says "there will be
a better day" ahead for Miami fans coping with the charges.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tom Brady showed midseason form in his
preseason debut last night. After sitting out New England's
preseason opener in Week 1, the reigning NFL MVP tossed a pair of
touchdowns and completed 11 of 19 passes in the New England
Patriots' 31-17 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee threw seven impressive innings,
Wilson Valdez hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh and
the Philadelphia Phillies beat Arizona 9-2 to snap the
Diamondbacks' seven-game winning streak. Lee improved to 13-7,
allowing two runs and three hits, striking out seven while winning
his fourth straight start.
ATLANTA (AP) - The San Francisco Giants closed within two and
a-half games of the NL West-leading Diamondbacks by holding off the
Atlanta Braves 7-5. Matt Cain snapped a personal three-game losing
streak, holding the Braves to five hits and one run over eight
innings, retiring 18 straight Braves during one stretch.
CHICAGO (AP) - Fausto Carmona allowed four hits over 8 1-3
innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 4-1
last night. The Indians moved within two games of AL
Central-leading Detroit, which lost 6-5 to Minnesota.
ATLANTA (AP) - San Francisco closer Brian Wilson has a date
today with Dr. James Andrews, who performed Tommy John surgery on
him in 2003. Wilson is going to have his ailing right elbow checked
out by Dr. Wilson.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Fallout continues from bombshell
allegations that Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro, now serving 20
years in federal prison, provided University of Miami players with
cash, prostitutes, cars and other gifts from 2002 to 2010. NCAA
President Mark Emmert says that if an NCAA investigation confirms
the Miami allegations, there is a need for "fundamental change"
in college sports.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks posted
their seventh straight win by rallying with two in the ninth to
defeat Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. Combined
with Atlanta's 2-1 win over San Francisco in 11 innings last night,
that moves the D-Backs three and a-half games ahead of the
defending World Series champion Giants in the NL West.
ATLANTA (AP) - Rookie Randall Delgado allowed no hits through
six innings in his second big-league start in helping Atlanta nip
the Giants 2-1. Martin (mahr-TEEN') Prado's two-out RBI single in
the 11th gave the Braves their 2-1 win, their NL-leading 22nd
victory won in their final at-bat.
DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's Justin Verlander is the majors' first
18-game winner after allowing one run over 7 2-3 innings in the
Tigers' 7-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Verlander struggled
through a 29-pitch first inning but settled down, striking out
eight and lowering his ERA to 2.31 and raising his mark to 18-5.
UNDATED (AP) - Milwaukee trimmed the L.A. Dodgers 2-1 on Mark
Kotsay's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. That gives the
Brewers a commanding seven-game lead over St. Louis. The Cardinals
lost 5-4 in Pittsburgh on Garrett Jones' leadoff homer in the 11th.
DENVER (AP) - Colorado Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio
(nih-KAH'-see-oh) says he feels lucky to be alive after being
struck by a line drive and fracturing his neck, and he wants to get
back on the mound. Nicasio spoke publicly yesterday for the first
time since Aug. 5 when a drive off the bat of Washington's Ian
Desmond struck him on the right side of the head.

DETROIT (AP) - Minnesota slugger Jim Thome (TOH'-mee) has
entered the baseball record books as the eighth major leaguer to
hit 600 home runs. Thome got Nos. 599 and 600 on consecutive
at-bats last night, with the milestone shot coming on an opposite
field, three-run blast off Daniel Schlereth in the Twins' 9-6 win
over Detroit.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers turned four double plays
and a triple play as part of a superb defensive effort in a 3-0
victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy
and Corey Hart homered for the NL Central-leading Brewers, who have
won 17 of 19 and have a six-game lead over second-place St. Louis
after the Cardinals lost 6-2 at Pittsburgh.
ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta increased its wild-card lead to five
games over San Francisco after rallying with three runs in the
bottom of the ninth to stun the defending World Series champion
Giants 5-4. Freddie Freeman's two-run single climaxed the
ninth-inning rally.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M President R. Bowen
Loftin says there's still a chance the Aggies will stay in the Big
12, although he says the Aggies are looking only at the
Southeastern Conference right now. Yesterday, Loftin received
authority from the board of regents to take any action he deems
necessary in terms of conference realignment.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Marcos Ambrose won the rain-delayed
Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International for his first victory
in NASCAR's top series. Brad Keselowski, who was racing with a
broken left ankle and trying for his second straight win and third
of the season, finished second.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Weather permitting, they'll try to run
the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen this morning. Rain washed out
yesterday's race on the 2.45-mile road course and more rain is in
the forecast for today in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New
York.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles Angels look to gain some
ground on the AL West-leading Texas Rangers tonight when the two
clubs open a four-game series in Anaheim. The Angels have dropped
their last two to fall four games behind the front-running Rangers.
Eleven-game winner Alexi Ogando starts for Texas against Garrett
Richards, who was pounded by the Yankees last week in his major
league debut.
ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta has a four-game lead over San Francisco
in the NL wild card race. The two clubs begin a three-game series
at Turner Field tonight with 12-game winner Tim Hudson pitching for
the Braves and lefty Madison Bumgarner throwing for the Giants.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Randy Wolf faces his ex-mates tonight when the
Milwaukee left-hander takes the mound tonight against visiting Los
Angeles. The Brewers enter on a three-game winning streak and lead
the NL Central by five games over St. Louis. The Cards play tonight
at Pittsburgh.
HOUSTON (AP) - The first week of the NFL preseason comes to a
close tonight when the Houston Texans entertain the New York Jets.
Plaxico Burress won't play for New York as he sprained his left
ankle in practice last week, but Houston will get a chance to show
off its new 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (AP) - Steve Stricker is the leader heading
into the second round of the PGA Championship at Atlanta Country
Club. Stricker opened with a 7-under-par 63 that ties the lowest
score ever in a major. Jerry Kelly is two shots back, Shaun Micheel
(mih-KEEL') is three off the lead and Tiger Woods is a whopping 14
strokes behind following a 7-over 77.
NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees are within one game of
first-place Boston in the American League East after Robinson Cano
(kuh-NOH') belted a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning of
the Bombers' 6-5 triumph over the Los Angeles Angels. Cano's blast
came one batter after Maicer Izturis (MY'-sur ihz-TOOR'-ihs)
committed a two-out error, and one inning after Curtis Granderson
tied the game with a two-run homer. The Angels are two games behind
West-leading Texas and eight games behind the Yankees for the wild
card.
PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks homered their way to a
one-game lead over San Francisco in the National League West last
night. Chris Young launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the
10th to give the DBacks an 8-5 comeback win over Houston. Paul
Goldschmidt forced extra innings with a two-out, two-run homer in
the ninth, one inning after Arizona scored twice in the eighth to
get within 5-3.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi
Umenyiora (OH'-see yoo-mihn-YOOR'-uh) tells The Associated Press
that his contract talks remain deadlocked. Giants' general manager
Jerry Reese offered a little hope by saying he expected to have the
29-year-old veteran back in the fold for this season. Umenyiora has
not practiced since training camp opened in late July because he is
unhappy with his contract.
UNDATED (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with
wide receiver Jericho Cotchery, who was released by the Jets last
week. The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Ravens tackle Jared
Gaither. And running back Ahman Green has retired as a Green Bay
Packer, ending his career as the team's all-time rushing leader.

UNDATED (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are the new leaders in
the National League West, moving a half-game ahead of San Francisco
with a 6-3 triumph over Houston. Willie Bloomquist led off the
bottom of the first with a homer before Paul Goldschmidt added a
two-run single to put the Diamondbacks ahead 3-0 later in the
inning. The Giants were clobbered by Pittsburgh 9-2 as Andrew
McCutchen hit a two-run homer and scored four times to help the
Pirates win a series for the first time in three weeks.
MIAMI (AP) - Braves second baseman Dan Uggla (UHG'-luh) has
extended his hitting streak to 31 games by going 3-for-5 with a
two-run single in last night's 6-2 win at Florida. Uggla tied Rico
Carty's Atlanta team record for longest hitting streak and is six
away from matching the franchise mark held by Tommy Holmes.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots reportedly
have hammered out a contract with Logan Mankins. ESPN reports the
Pats and the three-time Pro Bowl guard have agreed to a six-year
package. And free-agent wide receiver Steve Smith has left the New

the Americans. Robbie Rogers scored late in the second half to give
the U.S a draw. Klinsmann only has held three practices since he
took over a program that needed a clear jolt after years of
mediocre results.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Kurt Busch will drive the No. 22 Dodge
in place of injured Penske teammate Brad Keselowski in NASCAR's
Nationwide race at Watkins Glen International on Saturday.
Keselowski pulled out a gutsy victory in Sunday's Sprint Cup race
at Pocono despite a fractured left ankle and strained back suffered
a week ago in a crash while testing at Road Atlanta.

MIAMI (AP) -- Dan Uggla can tie Rico Carty's Atlanta Braves
franchise record for longest hitting streak tonight. Uggla has hit
in 30 straight games, which ties the Dodgers' Andre Ethier
(EE'-thee-ur) for longest streak in the majors this year.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Cliff Lee hurled eight scoreless innings with
10 strikeouts and hit his second career home run in the
Philadelphia Phillies' 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers
last night. The Phils have won 11 of 12 to move 36 games over .500
for the first time since 1977.
UNDATED (AP) - San Francisco and Arizona both won so the Giants
still lead the NL West by a half-game over the D-Backs. Chris
Stewart hit his first major league home run in the Giants' 6-0 win
over Pittsburgh while the D-Backs erased a six-run deficit to beat
Houston 11-9.
CHICAGO (AP) - Washington pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (shee-EHN'
ming wahng) is a winner in the majors for the first time in more
than two years. Wang didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and
combined with three relievers on a three-hitter in the Nationals'
3-1 win over the Chicago Cubs last night.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Roy Halladay of the Phillies has earned his
15th win of the season, most in the National League. Halladay
pitched the Phils to a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles
last night. Halladay went six and a-third innings, allowing nine
hits but just one run in running his record to 15-4.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane
Victorino homered and had three hits and scored three runs in the
Phils' win in Los Angeles while appealing a three-game suspension
imposed for his part in a weekend brawl at San Francisco. Major
League Baseball also fined Victorino an undisclosed amount, but
he's allowed to play until his appeal is heard.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates' 10-game losing
streak is history. The Pirates, who dropped from first to third in
the NL Central during their swoon, blanked NL West-leading San
Francisco 5-0 last night as Charlie Morton hurled eight strong
innings, allowing six hits.
MIAMI (AP) - Atlanta's Dan Uggla stretched his hitting streak to
29 games with an infield single last night in the Braves' 8-5 win
over Florida. That's the longest active hitting streak in the
majors and is two behind Rico Carty's franchise-record 31 in a row
in 1970.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's legendary 84-year-old
football coach Joe Paterno was hospitalized and undergoing tests on
his right arm and hip after a player ran into him during practice
on Sunday. A person familiar with the team says doctors were
evaluating Paterno's shoulder and pelvis, and there was no firm
diagnosis yet on the extent of the injuries.
