KWBG Sports for August 12th

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (AP) - Steve Stricker is the leader heading
into the second round of the PGA Championship at Atlanta Country
Club. Stricker opened with a 7-under-par 63 that ties the lowest
score ever in a major. Jerry Kelly is two shots back, Shaun Micheel
(mih-KEEL') is three off the lead and Tiger Woods is a whopping 14
strokes behind following a 7-over 77.
NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees are within one game of
first-place Boston in the American League East after Robinson Cano
(kuh-NOH') belted a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning of
the Bombers' 6-5 triumph over the Los Angeles Angels. Cano's blast
came one batter after Maicer Izturis (MY'-sur ihz-TOOR'-ihs)
committed a two-out error, and one inning after Curtis Granderson
tied the game with a two-run homer. The Angels are two games behind
West-leading Texas and eight games behind the Yankees for the wild
card.
PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks homered their way to a
one-game lead over San Francisco in the National League West last
night. Chris Young launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the
10th to give the DBacks an 8-5 comeback win over Houston. Paul
Goldschmidt forced extra innings with a two-out, two-run homer in
the ninth, one inning after Arizona scored twice in the eighth to
get within 5-3.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi
Umenyiora (OH'-see yoo-mihn-YOOR'-uh) tells The Associated Press
that his contract talks remain deadlocked. Giants' general manager
Jerry Reese offered a little hope by saying he expected to have the
29-year-old veteran back in the fold for this season. Umenyiora has
not practiced since training camp opened in late July because he is
unhappy with his contract.
UNDATED (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with
wide receiver Jericho Cotchery, who was released by the Jets last
week. The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Ravens tackle Jared
Gaither. And running back Ahman Green has retired as a Green Bay
Packer, ending his career as the team's all-time rushing leader.
