UNDATED (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are the new leaders in
the National League West, moving a half-game ahead of San Francisco
with a 6-3 triumph over Houston. Willie Bloomquist led off the
bottom of the first with a homer before Paul Goldschmidt added a
two-run single to put the Diamondbacks ahead 3-0 later in the
inning. The Giants were clobbered by Pittsburgh 9-2 as Andrew
McCutchen hit a two-run homer and scored four times to help the
Pirates win a series for the first time in three weeks.
MIAMI (AP) - Braves second baseman Dan Uggla (UHG'-luh) has
extended his hitting streak to 31 games by going 3-for-5 with a
two-run single in last night's 6-2 win at Florida. Uggla tied Rico
Carty's Atlanta team record for longest hitting streak and is six
away from matching the franchise mark held by Tommy Holmes.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots reportedly
have hammered out a contract with Logan Mankins. ESPN reports the
Pats and the three-time Pro Bowl guard have agreed to a six-year
package. And free-agent wide receiver Steve Smith has left the New
York Giants for a one-year deal with Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The U.S. men's soccer team played to a 1-1
tie against Mexico in Jurgen Klinsmann's debut as head coach for
the Americans. Robbie Rogers scored late in the second half to give
the U.S a draw. Klinsmann only has held three practices since he
took over a program that needed a clear jolt after years of
mediocre results.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Kurt Busch will drive the No. 22 Dodge
in place of injured Penske teammate Brad Keselowski in NASCAR's
Nationwide race at Watkins Glen International on Saturday.
Keselowski pulled out a gutsy victory in Sunday's Sprint Cup race
at Pocono despite a fractured left ankle and strained back suffered
a week ago in a crash while testing at Road Atlanta.
