KWBG Sports for August 30th

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback
Michael Vick have agreed to a six-year contract. A source familiar
with the contract says it's worth a guaranteed $40 million and can
pay out as much as $100 million, making Vick one of the NFL's
highest-paid players once again. Vick was named the NFC's starting
quarterback in the Pro Bowl last season and was the league's
comeback player of the year.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton
Manning practiced with the team yesterday for the first time since
undergoing neck surgery four months ago. The Colts activated the
four-time NFL Most Valuable player from the physically unable to
perform list on Monday, although Manning still doesn't know if
he'll be healthy enough to play in the season opener. Manning has
started 227 consecutive games, including playoffs, and says he
won't play just to keep the streak intact.
NEW YORK (AP) - Third seed Roger Federer and No. 8 Mardy Fish
were among the first-round winners at the U.S. Open yesterday.
Winners on the women's side include third seed Maria Sharapova and
unseeded Venus Williams, but No. 5 Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-uh-vuh)
became the first reigning Wimbledon champ to lose in the opening
round of the Open.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Associated Press has learned that the lead
negotiators for the NBA owners and players will meet tomorrow for
just the second time since the lockout began. The sides last met
Aug. 1, exactly one month after the lockout was imposed. The sides
remain far apart on numerous financial issues, and commissioner
David Stern was disappointed by the players' position and has said
there must be progress by Labor Day.
SANTA ANA, Calif. Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton has been
arrested in Southern California to face a murder charge in an
Atlanta shooting. An FBI spokeswoman said Crittenton was taken into
custody at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in
for a flight to Atlanta. Authorities were trying to determine
whether Crittenton will make an initial appearance in federal
court, or be taken directly to Atlanta to face state charges there.
