KWBG Sports for August 16th

DETROIT (AP) - Minnesota slugger Jim Thome (TOH'-mee) has
entered the baseball record books as the eighth major leaguer to
hit 600 home runs. Thome got Nos. 599 and 600 on consecutive
at-bats last night, with the milestone shot coming on an opposite
field, three-run blast off Daniel Schlereth in the Twins' 9-6 win
over Detroit.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers turned four double plays
and a triple play as part of a superb defensive effort in a 3-0
victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy
and Corey Hart homered for the NL Central-leading Brewers, who have
won 17 of 19 and have a six-game lead over second-place St. Louis
after the Cardinals lost 6-2 at Pittsburgh.
ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta increased its wild-card lead to five
games over San Francisco after rallying with three runs in the
bottom of the ninth to stun the defending World Series champion
Giants 5-4. Freddie Freeman's two-run single climaxed the
ninth-inning rally.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M President R. Bowen
Loftin says there's still a chance the Aggies will stay in the Big
12, although he says the Aggies are looking only at the
Southeastern Conference right now. Yesterday, Loftin received
authority from the board of regents to take any action he deems
necessary in terms of conference realignment.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Marcos Ambrose won the rain-delayed
Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International for his first victory
in NASCAR's top series. Brad Keselowski, who was racing with a
broken left ankle and trying for his second straight win and third
of the season, finished second.
