KWBG Sports for August 17th

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks posted
their seventh straight win by rallying with two in the ninth to
defeat Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. Combined
with Atlanta's 2-1 win over San Francisco in 11 innings last night,
that moves the D-Backs three and a-half games ahead of the
defending World Series champion Giants in the NL West.
ATLANTA (AP) - Rookie Randall Delgado allowed no hits through
six innings in his second big-league start in helping Atlanta nip
the Giants 2-1. Martin (mahr-TEEN') Prado's two-out RBI single in
the 11th gave the Braves their 2-1 win, their NL-leading 22nd
victory won in their final at-bat.
DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's Justin Verlander is the majors' first
18-game winner after allowing one run over 7 2-3 innings in the
Tigers' 7-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Verlander struggled
through a 29-pitch first inning but settled down, striking out
eight and lowering his ERA to 2.31 and raising his mark to 18-5.
UNDATED (AP) - Milwaukee trimmed the L.A. Dodgers 2-1 on Mark
Kotsay's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. That gives the
Brewers a commanding seven-game lead over St. Louis. The Cardinals
lost 5-4 in Pittsburgh on Garrett Jones' leadoff homer in the 11th.
DENVER (AP) - Colorado Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio
(nih-KAH'-see-oh) says he feels lucky to be alive after being
struck by a line drive and fracturing his neck, and he wants to get
back on the mound. Nicasio spoke publicly yesterday for the first
time since Aug. 5 when a drive off the bat of Washington's Ian
Desmond struck him on the right side of the head.
