BALTIMORE (AP) - Friends, teammates and colleagues are
remembering 1979 American League Cy Young Award winner Mike
Flanagan as a savvy left-hander who got the most out of his talent
while winning 167 games during his 18-year major league career,
mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. Former Oriole great Cal Ripken
Jr. says Flanagan, who was found dead at his suburban Baltimore
home yesterday at 59, "will be sorely missed."
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jered Weaver, the American League leader
in earned run average, pitched seven shutout innings in the L.A.
Angels' 8-0 win over the Chicago White Sox last night. Weaver
struck out eight while raising his record to 15-6.
UNDATED (AP) - The Boston Red Sox trounced the defending
American League champion Texas Rangers 13-2 and took over sole
possession of first place in the AL East by one game of the New
York Yankees. The Yanks dropped a 6-4 loss to Oakland in 10 innings
as Coco Crisp homered twice and drove in five runs.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis Colts are bringing one
veteran quarterback out of retirement. The Colts agreed to terms on
a one-year deal with Kerry Collins, making the 16-year NFL vet the
likely starter in case Peyton Manning hasn't completely recovered
from offseason neck surgery when the season opens Sept. 11.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Danica Patrick has called a news
conference today during which she's expected to announce her 2012
move to NASCAR. The Associated Press reported earlier this month
that Patrick was finalizing a deal to drive fulltime for JR
Motorsports in the second-tier Nationwide Series and hopes to race
a limited schedule of elite Sprint Cup Series races for
Stewart-Haas Racing.
