CINCINNATI (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers built a 20-point lead
and held off the Cincinnati Bengals 27-21 to climb into a first
place tie with Baltimore atop the AFC North with a 6-2 record. The
2-6 Bengals drove to the 12-yard line before Jordan Shipley was
stripped of a fourth-down pass with 34 seconds left, handing
Cincinnati its fifth straight loss.
IRVING, Texas (AP) - Jerry Jones calls it a "very difficult
decision" to fire Wade Phillips but says he had little choice
following the Dallas Cowboys' horrendous 1-7 start that included an
embarrassing 45-7 loss at Green Bay Sunday night. The 63-year-old
Phillips leaves with a 34-22 record over 4-1/2 seasons guiding the
Cowboys and will be replaced on an interim basis by 44-year-old
offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) - There's going to be a change in the
broadcast booth next season on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball"
where Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are out as announcers after 21
seasons. ESPN did not immediately say who the new broadcast team
would be.
NEW YORK (AP) - There's a chance that Yankees owner George
Steinbrenner and former New York manager Billy Martin, who often
feuded while trying to run the Yankees, could go into the Hall of
Fame in the same year. The Hall of Fame veterans committee says
both Steinbrenner and Martin are on its Hall of Fame ballot, along
with former union head Marvin Miller and players Vida Blue, Steve
Garvey, Tommy John, Ron Guidry and Rusty Staub, among others.
CANCUN, Mexico (AP) - Lauren Cheney scored an early goal, Abby
Wambach added two and the United States stayed alive in qualifying
for next year's Women's World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Costa
Rica. The U.S. women now play 11th-ranked Italy in a home-and-home,
total-goals series for the final berth in the tournament.
