KWBG Sports for January 31st

HONOLULU (AP) - The NFC set a Pro Bowl record for points in a
55-41 rout of the AFC in Honolulu. Game MVP DeAngelo Hall had one
of the NFC's five interceptions and returned a fumble 34 yards for
a touchdown to help his conference grab a 42-0 lead in the first
half. Linebacker Jon Beason brought back the final interception for
a TD to ice the victory.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Danny Briere (bree-EHR'), Jonathan Toews
(tayvz) and Martin St. Louis (mahr-TAN' san loo-EE') scored during
a four-minute span midway through the third period as Team Lidstrom
beat Team Staal 11-10 in the NHL All-Star game. Patrick Sharp was
named the MVP in a losing cause after producing a goal and two
assists. Loui (LOO'-ee) Eriksson had two goals and two assists for
Team Lidstrom.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Boston Celtics won a rematch of last
year's NBA Finals as Paul Pierce scored 32 points and Kevin Garnett
had a double-double in a 109-96 win over the Lakers in Los Angeles.
Garnett finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Ray Allen
chipped in 21 points to help the Celtics overcome Kobe Bryant's 41
points. It was the rivals' first meeting since Los Angeles rallied
from a late 13-point deficit for an 83-79 win in Game 7 of last
year's NBA Finals.

UNDATED (AP) - Expect to see several changes in the top-25 men's
basketball poll today following a weekend in which ranked teams
went 6-9 versus unranked opponents. St. John's and Washington State
pulled off such upsets on Sunday. The unranked Red Storm enjoyed a
93-78 rout of third-ranked Duke at Madison Square Garden.
Washington State was an 87-80 winner against 18th-ranked
Washington.

NEW YORK (AP) - The son of Martin Luther King Jr. is reportedly
interested in becoming a minority owner of the New York Mets. The
New York Post reports that Martin Luther King III is part of a bid
that includes former Mets first baseman Ed Kranepool, Donn
Clendenon Jr. and a television executive. Clendenon's father was
MVP of the Mets' 1969 World Series victory.

KWBG Sports for January 28th

NASHVILLE (AP) - Jeff Fisher is out after 16 full seasons as
head coach of the Tennessee Titans. The team made the announcement
within an hour of a report by SI.com that the Titans and Fisher
were negotiating his future, and three weeks after owner Bud Adams
announced Fisher would serve out the final year of his contract.
Fisher had been the NFL's longest tenured coach and led the Titans
to their only Super Bowl appearance.

NEW YORK (AP) - Miami Heat teammates LeBron James and Dwyane
(dwayn) Wade will be in the starting lineup for the Eastern
Conference in the NBA All-Star game February 20 in Los Angeles.
Rounding out the East starting five will be Orlando center Dwight
Howard, New York forward Amare Stoudemire (ah-MAR'-ay
STOO'-duh-my-ur) and Chicago guard Derrick Rose. Lakers guard Kobe
Bryant will be joined in the West starting lineup by New Orleans
guard Chris Paul, Oklahoma forward Kevin Durant and Denver forward
Carmelo Anthony, with a yet-to-be named center to replace injured
Houston star Yao Ming.

UNDATED (AP) - The Los Angeles Lakers will have a new coach next
season, according to current coach Phil Jackson. He told ESPN-Los
Angeles that this really is his final season, adding that he wants
to do this for himself. Jackson said last September that he was
uncertain whether he'd retire after the season.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tiger Woods opened his first tournament of the
year by firing a 3-under 69, leaving him five shots back in the
PGA's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Woods has captured
the last five tournaments he's played on the San Diego course but
is coming off his first winless season as a professional. Sunghoon
Kang is the first-round leader following an 8-under 64, one shot
better than Rickie Fowler and Alex Prugh.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Andy Murray has been playing No.7
David Ferrer (dah-VEED' feh-REHR'), in the Australian Open's second
men's semifinal. The winner of this match will face Novak Djokovic
(NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) in the final.

KWBG Sports for January 27th

PROVO, Utah (AP) - In one of the great individual performances
of the college basketball season, BYU's Jimmer Fredette dropped in
43 as the ninth-ranked Cougars handed fourth-ranked San Diego State
its first loss of the season, 71-58. That means top-ranked Ohio
State is the lone remaining undefeated team in men's Division I
basketball.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Li Na (lee nah) made tennis history
at the Australian Open today. Na became the first Chinese player to
reach a Grand Slam singles final by outlasting top-seed Caroline
Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Australian Open
semifinals.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The best individual performance of the night
in the NBA went to Kevin Durant, who had career highs of 47 points
and 18 rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Minnesota
Timberwolves, 118-117, in overtime. The Wolves' Kevin Love had a
big night of his own with 31 points and 21 rebounds.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR is simplifying its scoring system
and is implementing a straight scoring format based on finishing
position. It will give 43 points to the race winner, plus three
points, and decrease through the field down to 1 point for the
43rd-place finisher.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - After going winless on the PGA Tour last
season, Tiger Woods says he's looking forward to a new start in
2011. He opens his season at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey
Pines, a course where Woods has won seven times in his career,
including the 2008 U.S. Open.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Top-ranked Rafael Nadal couldn't
overcome a leg injury and was eliminated from the Australian Open
in straight sets by fellow Spaniard David Ferrer. Fifth-seeded Andy
Murray posted a quarterfinals victory and will meet the No. 7 seed
in the semifinals.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - In women's play Wednesday in
Melbourne, Vera Zvonareva (zvahn-uh-RAY'-vuh) and Kim Clijsters
(KLY'-sturz) won in straight sets. The second and third seeds will
go head to head in the semifinals.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse has lost its third basketball
game in a row following an 18-0 start. The third-ranked Orange got
hammered 90-68 by visiting Seton Hall.

BOSTON (AP) - The Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics
bounced back from a loss to the struggling Washington Wizards by
beating the equally-if-not-more inept Cavaliers 112-95. It's
Cleveland's 18th loss in a row, dropping the Cavs record to an
NBA-worst 8-37 in the post-LeBron James era.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers have traded former
closer Frank Francisco and cash to Toronto for catcher-first
baseman Mike Napoli. It's a win-win deal for both, with the AL
champions obtaining a much-needed versatile bat off the bench and
the Blue Jays adding depth to their bullpen.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Roger Federer is two victories away
from becoming the first man to win five Australian Open titles. The
defending men's champion cruised into the semifinals with a 6-1,
6-3, 6-3 win over Stanislas Wawrinka (vah-VINK'-ah).

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - David West scored 20 and canned a 17-foot
fadeaway with a half-second left in the New Orleans Hornets' ninth
straight win, 91-89 over Oklahoma City. Chris Paul led the Hornets
with 24 points, nine assists and three steals.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt's second-ranked basketball team suffered
its first home loss in more than a year when 15th-ranked Notre Dame
beat the Panthers 56-51. Ben Hansbrough scored 19 points, Carleton
Scott had 16 for the 15th-ranked Irish, who rallied from a
five-point halftime deficit.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) - Jay Cutler finally got some protection
from second-guessers who questioned his toughness for sitting out
most of the second half of Sunday's 21-14 NFC championship game
loss to Green Bay with a knee injury. Bears GM Jerry Angelo called
the other players' criticism "crap," Bears coach Lovie Smith said
Cutler sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee
late in the first half.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Sam Hornish Jr. says he hopes to run a
minimum of 11 Nationwide Series races this season for Penske
Racing. Hornish admits it's a step back, but says sponsorship woes
forced his team to give up his seat in the elite Sprint Cup Series
where he raced full-time the past three years.

UNDATED (AP) - Las Vegas oddsmakers have installed the Green Bay
Packers early two and a-half point favorites against the Pittsburgh
Steelers in Super Bowl 45 in two weeks. The Packers will be trying
for their fourth Super Bowl title while the Steelers are chasing a
record seventh Super Bowl ring.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Rashard (rah-SHARD') Mendenhall ran 27 times
for 121 yards and a touchdown to send the Steelers to Super Bowl 45
with a 24-19 victory over the New York Jets. The Steelers opened a
24-0 second-quarter lead and then held off a furious Jets rally to
reach the Super Bowl for the third time in six seasons.

CHICAGO (AP) - The sixth-seeded Green Bay Packers are NFC
champions following their 21-14 win over Chicago that sends the
Pack to the Super Bowl for the first time in 13 seasons. The
Packers now have now won road games in Philadelphia, Atlanta and
Chicago.

DENVER (AP) - Carmelo Anthony scored 23 of his game-high 36 in
the third quarter of the Denver Nuggets' 121-107 win over Indiana
last night. Anthony canned a career-best six 3-pointers in the
third quarter as the Nuggets handed the Pacers their fifth straight
loss.

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) - Jhonattan (JAHN'-uh-thihn) Vegas made a
13-foot par putt on the second playoff hole to win the Bob Hope
Classic, holding off Gary Woodland for his first PGA Tour victory.
The Venezuelan rookie won in just his fifth PGA Tour start.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Andy Roddick overcame a slow start
before serving 32 aces to beat Robin Haase 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 and
move into the fourth round of the Australian Open. Seven-time Grand
Slam winner Justine Henin (EH'-nihn) has been eliminated in the
third round, losing 6-4, 7-6 to Svetlana Kuznetsova (svet-LAH'-nah
kooz-NET'-so-vah).

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets linebacker Jason Taylor
has returned to practice on a limited basis, and wide receiver-kick
returner Brad Smith is expected to play in the AFC championship
game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Taylor sat out practice
Wednesday while recovering from a concussion, but was back
yesterday.

DENVER (AP) - Pekka Rinne (PEH'-kuh RIH'-nuh) stopped 32 shots
to lift the Nashville Predators to a 5-1 win over a Colorado
Avalanche squad that learned hours earlier that forward Tomas
Fleischmann would be out for the rest of the season with blood
clots in his lungs. The Predators have won nine of 11.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Martin Brodeur (mar-TAN' broh-DYOOR') and
the suddenly revived New Jersey Devils took advantage of the
absence of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to shut out the
Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0. Brodeur had a a relatively easy night,
stopping 23 shots in posting his fourth shutout of the season and
114th of his career.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Former ESPN announcer Ron Franklin is suing
the network over his firing for reportedly berating a female
colleague, Jeannine Edwards. The wrongful termination lawsuit filed
in Franklin's hometown of Austin claims ESPN had no grounds for
dismissing him, but a spokesman says the network acted
appropriately in firing the 68-year-old Franklin.

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Mavericks broke out of their
season-high six-game losing streak with a 109-100 win over the L.A.
Lakers. Jason Kidd scored a season-high 21 on 8 of 12 shooting
after making just 1 of 14 shots of his previous two games.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - You won't be seeing Carmelo Anthony in a New
Jersey Nets uniform any time soon. Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has
nixed any proposed Anthony trade, saying the long-rumored trade
distracted his team, which then went out and ended their six-game
losing streak with a 103-95 win over Utah last night.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Trail Blazers say center
Marcus Camby will need surgery on his left knee and there is no
timetable for his return. He joins All-Star Brandon Roy, who just
had arthroscopic surgery on both knees, and oft-injured center Greg
Oden on the Trail Blazers' injured list.

NEW YORK (AP) - Marian Gaborik (MEHR'-ee-uhn GA'-bohr-ihk) had
four goals and an assist three days after being benched and the New
York Rangers scored early and often in a 7-0 victory over the
Toronto Maple Leafs. Gaborik picked up the offensive slack just a
few hours after the Rangers said leading scorer Brandon Dubinsky
would be out three to four weeks because of a stress fracture in
his left leg.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL')
extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 23 matches, beating
American qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third
round of the Australian Open. The top-ranked Nadal is aiming to be
the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slam
titles at the same time.

UNDATED (AP) - Several former NFL head coaches landed assistant
coaching jobs for next season. Ex-Oakland coach Tom Cable is the
new offensive coordinator in Seattle, St. Louis hired ex-Denver
coach Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator and former San
Francisco head coach Mike Singletary is linebackers coach and
assistant head coach under Leslie Frazier with the Vikings.

MIAMI (AP) - The star-laden Miami Heat are on a four-game losing
streak. Atlanta delivered the latest loss, 93-89 in overtime, last
night, despite 34 points and 10 rebounds by Miami's LeBron James.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andrej Meszaros (AWN'-dray MEHT'-zahr-ohsh)
scored 1:07 into overtime to bail out the Flyers after they blew a
third period lead and give Philadelphia a 3-2 win over the
Washington Capitals. The victory gives the Flyers 65 points, tied
with Vancouver for most in the NHL.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki
(wohz-nee-AK'-ee) advanced to the third round of the Australian
Open with an emphatic 6-1, 6-love win over American Vania King in a
58-minute match. Venus Williams, the fourth seed, fought off an
apparent muscle pull at the end of her first set to beat Sandra
Zahlavova (zah-lah-VOH'-vuh), 6-7, 6-love, 6-4 to reach the third
round.

PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU guard Jimmer Fredette (freh-DEHT'), the
nation's leading scorer in Division I basketball, scored 21 points
in leading the ninth-ranked Cougars to their 18th victory in 19
games, 83-67 over TCU. Fredette was just 6-of-16 from the field and
was held below his 26-point per-game scoring average.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders have found their
sixth head coach since 2003, promoting offensive coordinator Hue
Jackson to replace Tom Cable. The hiring comes after the Raiders
more than doubled their point total from 2009 and finished 8-8 to
avoid an eighth consecutive losing season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Quarterback Brett Favre (fahrv) has taken a
major step toward retirement by filing the proper papers with the
NFL, although it's a procedure he's done twice before and changed
his mind. Favre suffered numerous injuries while throwing for only
11 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in 16 games to finish with a
career-low 69.9 passer rating.

NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with the negotiations says the
New York Mets have worked out a contract with former All-Star
pitcher Chris Young, pending a physical. Young has missed most of
the last three seasons, going 13-12 with a 4.13 ERA.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A person familiar with NASCAR's proposed
changes for this season tells The Associated Press the sanctioning
body is considering scrapping the points system it has used since
1975. The sanctioning body wants to go to a scoring system that
would award 43 points to the race winner, and one point less for
each ensuing position down to 1 point for the 43rd-place finisher.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Men's top seed Rafael Nadal
(nah-DAHL') and women's No. 3 Vera Zvonareva (avah-nah-RAY'-uh)
were straight-sets winners in the first round of the Australian
Open on Tuesday. Other winners on the men's side include No. 5 seed
Andy Murray, seventh seed David Ferrer and American Michael
Russell. Women's fifth seed Sam Stosur and No. 7 Jelena Jankovic

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New York Jets beat the New England
Patriots 28-21 to earn a spot in the AFC championship game at
Pittsburgh next Sunday. Mark Sanchez threw for three touchdowns and
no interceptions to help the Jets reach the conference title game
for the second straight year. The Jets recorded five sacks of Tom
Brady, who also threw his first interception since Week 6 when
David Harris picked him off in the first quarter.

CHICAGO (AP) - It will be the Bears hosting the Green Bay
Packers in the NFC championship game next Sunday after Chicago
earned a convincing 35-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Jay Cutler
threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others while the Bears
were building a 35-10 lead. Tight end Greg Olsen had three
receptions for 113 yards, including a 58-yard TD grab on the Bears'
first series.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - On the first day of the Australia

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A person with knowledge of the deal says
the Oakland Athletics and free-agent lefty reliever Brian Fuentes
have agreed to terms on a two-year contract, pending a physical.
The 35-year-old Fuentes was 4-1 with 24 saves and a 2.81 ERA in 48
appearances and 48 innings with the Los Angeles Angels and
Minnesota Twins last season.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Joey Votto is being rewarded for winning the
National League MVP and leading the Cincinnati Reds to their first
playoff berth in 15 years. A person familiar with negotiations
tells The Associated Press that the Reds and Votto have hammered
out a three-year, $38 million deal. Votto hit .324 with 37 homers
and 113 RBIs for the NL Central champs last season.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - All of a sudden, there's star power in
April's NFL draft. Auburn's dual-threat quarterback Cam Newton, who
ran for 20 touchdowns while throwing for 30 in leading the Tigers
to their first national title since 1957, is skipping his senior
year and will enter the NFL draft.

DENVER (AP) - Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points and the Denver
Nuggets took advantage of the absence of LeBron James, out with a
sprained ankle, to beat the Miami Heat 130-102. That's the Heat's
second straight loss as they drop to 30-11, a half-game back of
Boston for top spot in the NBA's Eastern Conference.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Bad news for Portland Trail Blazers' fans.
All-Star guard Brandon Roy plans to have surgery on both his knees
and there is no timetable for his return.

UNDATED (AP) - Two of the final three vacant coaching positions
in the NFL were filled yesterday, leaving only the Oakland Raiders
still in search mode. Coming off a franchise-worst 2-14 season, the
Denver Broncos hired former Carolina head coach John Fox and the
Cleveland Browns, with just one playoff appearance in the last 13
seasons, have turned to longtime NFL assistant coach Pat Shurmur.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Rafael Nadal will begin his quest
for his fourth straight Grand Slam title with a first-round match
against Marcos Daniel of Brazil at the Australian Open that starts
Monday. On the women's side, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Duke's 25-game winning streak is over.
Unranked Florida State got 22 points from Derwin Kitchen and the
Seminoles knocked off the top-ranked defending national champions
66-61, handing Duke its first defeat since it lost to Maryland last
March 3.

UNDATED (AP) - The four other unbeaten teams in the AP rankings
were in action last night - and all won. Second-ranked Ohio State
beat Michigan 68-64, third-ranked Kansas topped Iowa State 84-79,
fourth-ranked Syracuse topped St. John's 76-59 and sixth-ranked San
Diego State beat UNLV 55-49.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Clippers ended the Miami
Heat's attempt for a franchise record 14th straight road victory by
upsetting the Heat 111-105 last night. Eric Gordon scored 26 for
the Clippers, who ended Miami's nine-game overall streak.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Marcus Thornton scored 22 and Emeka Okafor
(eh-MEH'-kuh OH'-kuh-fohr) had 18 points and 14 rebounds in the New
Orleans Hornets' 92-89 overtime win over Orlando. That ends the
Magic's nine-game winning streak.

DIAMONDHEAD, Miss. (AP) - Police say Brandi Favre (fahrv), the
34-year-old sister of Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, faces felony
drug charges after she was arrested in a raid on a Mississippi
condo where people were making crystal methamphetamine. Brandi
Favre is in custody and has an initial court appearance scheduled
this morning.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The L.A. Lakers handed the Cleveland
Cavaliers a 55-point loss in a 112-57 beat-down at Staples Centers.
The 57 points are the fewest ever allowed by the Lakers as they
handed the Cavs their 11th straight loss.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Manu Ginobili (MAN'-oo jih-NOH'-blee) had 19
points, including five technical free throws in a 10-second span of
the third quarter, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Minnesota
Timberwolves 107-96. The Timberwolves have lost five in a row and
came unglued during referee Ken Mauer's five-technical binge in the
third quarter.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Draymond Green scored a career-high
26 points, and Kalin Lucas made three free throws in the final
minute of overtime to lift Michigan State to a 64-61 victory over
No. 20 Wisconsin last night. The Spartans scored the final nine
points of regulation to tie the game at 53, and improved to 12-4
overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Panthers have entrusted Ron
Rivera with turning around the NFL's worst team, making the San
Diego defensive coordinator the second Latino head coach in NFL
history, joining ex-Raiders and Seahawks boss Tom Flores. Rivera
replaces John Fox, who was let go after the Panthers' 2-14
campaign.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Trevor Hoffman, baseball's all-time saves
leader, has answered his last call from the bullpen. The
43-year-old Hoffman is retiring after 18 years and 601 saves and is
taking a front office job with the San Diego Padres.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Auburn is the national champion of
college football after Wes Byrum hit a 19-yard field goal as time
expired to give the Tigers a 22-19 win over Oregon. Freshman
Michael Dyer ran for 143 yards, including a 16-yard scamper that
put Auburn at the Oregon 1 just before Byrum's kick. Cam Newton
threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns while the Tigers limited
LaMichael James to 49 yards, 104 yards below his season average.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Auburn's victory in college football's
national championship completes an unprecedented climb. Auburn
(14-0) began the season at No. 22, but finishes No. 1 in The
Associated Press college football poll. Also undefeated at 13-0,

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tulsa football coach Todd Graham could be
introduced today as Pittsburgh's third football coach in a month.
Graham has a 36-17 record in four years at Tulsa, including a 10-3
record this past season. He would replace Mike Haywood, who was
hired last month but was fired New Year's Day following his arrest
on a domestic violence charge.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Chris Petersen says he has no plans to leave
Boise State. Petersen has become a hot commodity after building the
Broncos into a perennial Top-10 team and compiling a 61-5 record
over the past five seasons. While Petersen's name has come up in
discussions of higher profile jobs, he's elected to try to continue
his recent success at Boise State.

DENVER (AP) - Carmelo Anthony doesn't think a trade to New
Jersey is imminent. A person with knowledge of the discussions told
The Associated Press the Nets were closing in on a three-team deal
that would bring the Nuggets leading scorer to New Jersey. The
trade would reunite Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton in New
Jersey along with Anthony.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - LeBron James poured in 44 points with 13
rebounds and six assists in leading the Miami Heat to a 107-100
overtime win over Portland. Dwyane (dwayn) Wade added 34 points in
the Heat's 13th straight road win and 21st victory in their last 22
overall.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Rodgers tossed three TD passes in
winning his first NFL playoff game in Green Bay's 21-16 upset of
Philadelphia. That sends the Packers to Atlanta to play the
Falcons, top seed in the NFC side of the playoffs, next Saturday
night in the second round of the playoffs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Joe Flacco had two TD passes in
Baltimore's 30-7 rout of Kansas City that sets up the third meeting
of the season between the Ravens and Steelers next Saturday in
Pittsburgh. The Ravens and Steelers have split two previous
meetings.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) - Jonathan Byrd started the new year the
way he ended the old one - with a victory. Byrd, who won the final
event last year with a win in Las Vegas, opened the PGA Tour season
by winning the Tournament of Champions in a sudden-death playoff
against Robert Garrigus (GEHR'-ih-guhs), who missed a 3-foot par
putt on the second extra hole.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Tonight's national championship game
between top-ranked Auburn and second-ranked Oregon could be a
high-scoring affair between two unbeaten teams. The Tigers come
into the game averaging 42.7 points a game while the speedy Ducks
are averaging 49.3 points a contest.

RENTON, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks may be double-digit
underdogs at home against defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans
on Saturday, but at least they are getting their starting
quarterback back on the field. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says
35-year-old Matt Hasselbeck's hip injury is improving and he gets
the starting nod over backup Charlie Whitehurst for the Seahawks,
who enter the playoffs sporting a 7-9 record.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Saying he's committed to earning his
Stanford degree in architectural design by the spring of 2012,
Andrew Luck says he's passing on the NFL draft this year to play
another year of college ball. Many scouts had projected the
Stanford quarterback to be the No. 1 overall pick had he chosen to
go pro.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has scheduled a news conference
today as a report has surfaced that the Tide's standout defensive
end Marcell Dareus is heading to the NFL. Dareus's legal guardian,
Lester Reasor, told The Birmingham News that Dareus has decided to
skip his senior season and head to the NFL.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) - Jonathan Byrd and Carl Pettersson start
the day tied for the lead at the PGA season-opening Tournament of
Champions at Kapalua on the big island of Hawaii. Two-time
defending champion Geoff Ogilvy (OH'-gihl-vee) withdrew three days
after gouging his right index finger on a coral feer at the beach.

BOSTON (AP) - The Minnesota Wild stayed unbeaten in Boston with
a 3-1 win over the Bruins that gives the Wild a 9-2 overall mark
against the Bruins since Minnesota entered the NHL in 2000.
Boston's loss coupled with Montreal's 2-1 shootout win over
Pittsburgh, trims the Bruins' Northeast Division lead to one point
over the Canadiens, although the Bruins have two games in hand.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Top-ranked Duke ran its winning streak to
24, longest in the nation, with an 85-64 rout of
Alabama-Birmingham. Nolan Smith clicked for a career-high 33 for
the 14-0 Blue Devils.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut's second-ranked women's
basketball team has rebounded just fine from its first loss in
nearly two and a-half years. Following its loss to Stanford last
week that ended its 90-game winning streak, the UConn women
trounced Villanova 81-35 behind Tiffany Hayes' 22 points.

NEW YORK (AP) - Slick-fielding second baseman Roberto Alomar and
pitcher Bert Blyleven, fifth on the all-time strikeout list, are
the newest members of the Baseball Hall of Fame to be inducted into
Cooperstown this summer. In refusing entry into the Hall for
sluggers Rafael Palmeiro (pahl-MAYR'-oh), Mark McGwire, Jeff
Bagwell and Juan Gonzalez, baseball writer voters appear to be
continuing the trend of not allowing bulky hitters who posted big
numbers during the Steroid Era into the Hall.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Miami of Ohio can make college football
history with a victory tonight over Middle Tennessee in the
GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile. Coming off a 1-11 year, if Miami beats
MTSU for its 10th victory of the season, the RedHawks will be the
first team in Football Bowl Subdivision history to go from
double-digit losses to double-digit victories the next season.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Rich Rodriguez gets together with
athletic director Dave Brandon again Wednesday to see if he'll keep
his job as Michigan football coach. The two met Tuesday to discuss
the coach's future after he went 15-and-22 overall and 7-and-6 this
season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Wilson Chandler's season-high 31 points led a
torrid night of shooting for the Knicks who beat San Antonio
128-115. New York shot 55 percent in scoring the most points
against the league-leading Spurs this season. San Antonio is now
29-and-5.

UNDATED (AP) - Dan Uggla has reached agreement with Atlanta on a
$62 million, five-year contract, a person familiar with the
negotiations tells The Associated Press. The second baseman was
acquired from Florida in November for infielder Omar Infante and
left-hander Mike Dunn.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Ben Hansbrough scored 21 points and
helped hold Kemba Walker to lead No. 14 Notre Dame to a 73-70 win
over eighth-ranked Connecticut. With Hansbrough's help, Walker
scored just 19 points, nearly eight points below his average, on
8-of-23 shooting.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Clayton Stoner will always remember his
game-winning goal in Minnesota's 2-1 victory over New Jersey, not
only because it was his first in the NHL, but for how it happened.
Stoner sent the puck into the Devils zone along the boards and as
New Jersey goalie Johan (YOH'-hahn) Hedberg went behind the net to
play it, it caromed off the boards and into the empty net.

million, seven-year contract with Colorado a person familiar with
the deal has told the Associated Press. The National League batting
champ hit .336 with 34 homers and 117 RBIs last season.

HOUSTON (AP) - Gary Kubiak will return as Houston Texans coach
next season despite a 6-and-10 mark. However, four defensive
assistants were fired after the team surrendered a league-high
4,280 yards passing along with 33 touchdown passes this season.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Recently acquired Hedo Turkoglu's (HAY'-doo
TURK'-oh-looz) 10 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists led Orlando
over Golden State 110-90. Dwight Howard added 22 points and 17
rebounds in the Magic's sixth straight win.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Alexandre Burrows scored the game winner
midway through the third period to lift surging Vancouver to a 4-3
victory over San Jose. The Canucks improved to 15-1-2 in their past
18 game and moved into first place in the NHL's Western Conference.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - UCLA linebacker Akeem Ayers has decided to
forego his senior season and apply for the NFL draft. The
All-American was fourth on the team with 68 tackles and tied for
first with 4.0 sacks.

UNDATED (AP) - The first round matchups of the NFL playoffs are
set for next weekend. Next Saturday, the defending Super Bowl
champion New Orleans Saints open on the road against NFC West
champion Seattle followed by the New York Jets at Indianapolis and
then on Sunday, Baltimore visits Kansas City and Philadelphia hosts
Green Bay in other wild card matchups.

DETROIT (AP) - Brett Favre's (farvz) illustrious 20-year career
has apparently ended with him on the sideline in street clothes in
the Minnesota Vikings' 20-13 loss to Detroit. Afterward, the
41-year-old three-time MVP quarterback called it "a wonderful ride
for me" and reiterated that this time, his playing days are over
for good.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he
will decide in the next couple of days whether he'll remove the
interim head coach tag from Jason Garrett and give him the job.
Garrett went 5-3 since replacing Wade Phillips at midseason, and is
believed to have the inside track on the job.

DETROIT (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers ended a 22-year slump in
Detroit on Sunday. James van Riemsdyk (REEMS'-dyk), Daniel Carcillo
and Scott Hartnell scored to help the Philadelphia Flyers win for
the first time in Detroit in more than 22 years, 3-2 over the Red
Wings for their first win at Joe Louis Arena since Nov. 4, 1988.
