GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Auburn is the national champion of
college football after Wes Byrum hit a 19-yard field goal as time
expired to give the Tigers a 22-19 win over Oregon. Freshman
Michael Dyer ran for 143 yards, including a 16-yard scamper that
put Auburn at the Oregon 1 just before Byrum's kick. Cam Newton
threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns while the Tigers limited
LaMichael James to 49 yards, 104 yards below his season average.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Auburn's victory in college football's
national championship completes an unprecedented climb. Auburn
(14-0) began the season at No. 22, but finishes No. 1 in The
Associated Press college football poll. Also undefeated at 13-0,
TCU comes in at No. 2. Oregon finished third, a spot ahead of
Pac-10 rival Stanford. Ohio State was fifth.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tulsa football coach Todd Graham could be
introduced today as Pittsburgh's third football coach in a month.
Graham has a 36-17 record in four years at Tulsa, including a 10-3
record this past season. He would replace Mike Haywood, who was
hired last month but was fired New Year's Day following his arrest
on a domestic violence charge.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Chris Petersen says he has no plans to leave
Boise State. Petersen has become a hot commodity after building the
Broncos into a perennial Top-10 team and compiling a 61-5 record
over the past five seasons. While Petersen's name has come up in
discussions of higher profile jobs, he's elected to try to continue
his recent success at Boise State.
DENVER (AP) - Carmelo Anthony doesn't think a trade to New
Jersey is imminent. A person with knowledge of the discussions told
The Associated Press the Nets were closing in on a three-team deal
that would bring the Nuggets leading scorer to New Jersey. The
trade would reunite Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton in New
Jersey along with Anthony.
