KWBG Sports for January 18th

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders have found their
sixth head coach since 2003, promoting offensive coordinator Hue
Jackson to replace Tom Cable. The hiring comes after the Raiders
more than doubled their point total from 2009 and finished 8-8 to
avoid an eighth consecutive losing season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Quarterback Brett Favre (fahrv) has taken a
major step toward retirement by filing the proper papers with the
NFL, although it's a procedure he's done twice before and changed
his mind. Favre suffered numerous injuries while throwing for only
11 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in 16 games to finish with a
career-low 69.9 passer rating.

NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with the negotiations says the
New York Mets have worked out a contract with former All-Star
pitcher Chris Young, pending a physical. Young has missed most of
the last three seasons, going 13-12 with a 4.13 ERA.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A person familiar with NASCAR's proposed
changes for this season tells The Associated Press the sanctioning
body is considering scrapping the points system it has used since
1975. The sanctioning body wants to go to a scoring system that
would award 43 points to the race winner, and one point less for
each ensuing position down to 1 point for the 43rd-place finisher.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Men's top seed Rafael Nadal
(nah-DAHL') and women's No. 3 Vera Zvonareva (avah-nah-RAY'-uh)
were straight-sets winners in the first round of the Australian
Open on Tuesday. Other winners on the men's side include No. 5 seed
Andy Murray, seventh seed David Ferrer and American Michael
Russell. Women's fifth seed Sam Stosur and No. 7 Jelena Jankovic
(yeh-LAY'-nuh YANK'-oh-vihch) reached round-2 with straight-sets
wins.
