HONOLULU (AP) - The NFC set a Pro Bowl record for points in a
55-41 rout of the AFC in Honolulu. Game MVP DeAngelo Hall had one
of the NFC's five interceptions and returned a fumble 34 yards for
a touchdown to help his conference grab a 42-0 lead in the first
half. Linebacker Jon Beason brought back the final interception for
a TD to ice the victory.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Danny Briere (bree-EHR'), Jonathan Toews
(tayvz) and Martin St. Louis (mahr-TAN' san loo-EE') scored during
a four-minute span midway through the third period as Team Lidstrom
beat Team Staal 11-10 in the NHL All-Star game. Patrick Sharp was
named the MVP in a losing cause after producing a goal and two
assists. Loui (LOO'-ee) Eriksson had two goals and two assists for
Team Lidstrom.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Boston Celtics won a rematch of last
year's NBA Finals as Paul Pierce scored 32 points and Kevin Garnett
had a double-double in a 109-96 win over the Lakers in Los Angeles.
Garnett finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Ray Allen
chipped in 21 points to help the Celtics overcome Kobe Bryant's 41
points. It was the rivals' first meeting since Los Angeles rallied
from a late 13-point deficit for an 83-79 win in Game 7 of last
year's NBA Finals.
UNDATED (AP) - Expect to see several changes in the top-25 men's
basketball poll today following a weekend in which ranked teams
went 6-9 versus unranked opponents. St. John's and Washington State
pulled off such upsets on Sunday. The unranked Red Storm enjoyed a
93-78 rout of third-ranked Duke at Madison Square Garden.
Washington State was an 87-80 winner against 18th-ranked
Washington.
NEW YORK (AP) - The son of Martin Luther King Jr. is reportedly
interested in becoming a minority owner of the New York Mets. The
New York Post reports that Martin Luther King III is part of a bid
that includes former Mets first baseman Ed Kranepool, Donn
Clendenon Jr. and a television executive. Clendenon's father was
MVP of the Mets' 1969 World Series victory.
