The Mackey honor is a national award presented by the Nassau
County Sports Commission.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay etched his name into baseball's

Larsen's perfect game in 1956. Halladay struck out eight and walk
just one as Philadelphia blanked Cincinnati 4-0 in the opening game
of the National League Division Series.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Cliff Lee struck out 10 in seven
innings and Nelson Cruz and Bengie Molina homered off David Price

opening game of that ALDS. Game 2 is today at Tropicana Field where
James Shields tries to get the Rays even against C.J. Wilson of the
Rangers.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR'-uh) launched a
two-run tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning that gave the
New York Yankees a 6-4 victory over Minnesota in the opener of that
ALDS. The Twins have lost seven straight postseason games to the

veteran Andy Pettitte against the Twins' 17-game winner Carl Pavano
in this evening's Game 2.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The last series to get started is in the
City by the Bay where the NL West champion San Francisco Giants

at Philadelphia is up next, with New York and Minnesota bringing
down the curtain tonight in Minneapolis.

MIAMI (AP) - Miami's Big 3 were together for all of three
minutes before Dwyane (dwayn) Wade limped into the locker room with
a strained right hamstring. But LeBron James and Chris Bosh more
than picked up the slack, combining for 38 points in a 105-89 win
over the Detroit Pistons in the Heat's exhibition opener.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State football coach Mark
Dantonio expects to travel with the team for this weekend's game at
Michigan as he recovers from a mild heart attack and subsequent

to coach from a box above the field, but he was hospitalized
Thursday because of the blood clot.

KWBG Sports for October 5th

MIAMI (AP) - The New England Patriots joined the New York Jets
atop the AFC East with a 41-14 rout over mistake-prone Miami last

Brady with his 100th regular-season victory in 131 career starts.

UNDATED (AP) - There's one more day of waiting before baseball's
postseason opens with a tripleheader on Wednesday. Tampa Bay ace

the only current major league franchise that's never won a playoff
series, followed by upstart Cincinnati against two-time NL champion
Philadelphia and 21-game winner Roy Halladay with the World Series
champion New York Yankees visiting Minnesota on Wednesday night for
the first postseason game at Target Field.

UNDATED (AP) - Three managers and one general manager started
their offseason by getting fired. The New York Mets got rid of

(mih-NY'-yuh) after missing the playoffs for the fourth straight
year and Milwaukee's Ken Macha (MAH'-kuh) and Pittsburgh's John
Russell also got pink slips.

NEWPORT, Wales (AP) - Europe is celebrating its one-point
victory in reclaiming the Ryder Cup with its fourth straight win on
European soil. The first Monday finish in the 83-year history of

to 13 1/2 victory over the United States.

DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Chicago Bulls are rewarding Joakim
Noah (JOH'-keem NOH'-ah) for last year's breakout season with a

surgery today after breaking his right hand in what he says was an

KWBG Sports for October 4th

NEWPORT, Wales (AP) - Europe has reclaimed the Ryder Cup,
winning a thriller that went down to the final singles match.
The Americans rallied from a three-point deficit to tie the
score, bringing the title down to the 12th match. But U.S. Open
champion Graeme McDowell made a clutch birdie putt at the 16th and
was conceded his par putt at No. 17. Hunter Mahan flubbed a chip
shot, then missed a last-gasp putt from off the green to save par.
The Europeans won 14 1/2-13 1/2 to reclaim the cup won by the
Americans at Valhalla two years ago.

UNDATED (AP) - San Francisco clinched its first NL West title
since 2003 with a 3-0 win over second-place San Diego on the final
day of the regular season. The Padres also lost the wild-card berth
to the Atlanta Braves, who punched their ticket to the postseason
with an 8-7 victory over the East champion Philadelphia Phillies.

UNDATED (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals
3-2 in 12 innings to claim their second AL East title in three
years. That leaves the wild card to the New York Yankees, who
dropped an 8-4 decision to the Boston Red Sox.

UNDATED (AP) - Osi Umenyiora (OH'-see yoo-mihn-YOHR'-uh) and
Justin Tuck recorded three sacks apiece and the New York Giants
defense limited Chicago to 110 total yards in last night's 17-3
victory that marked the Bear's first defeat of the year. And the
previously unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers lost to Baltimore 17-14,
leaving idle Kansas City as the only NFL team without a blemish on
its record.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Jimmie Johnson is taking dead aim at
another Cup title. The four-time series champion moved to the top
of the Chase standings with a second-place finish to Greg Biffle at
Kansas Speedway. Johnson is eight points better than former points

KWBG Sports for October 1st

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants' season has come
down to this: If they beat San Diego once in their three-game
season-ending series with Matt Cain starting tonight at AT&T Park,
the Giants clinch their first division title and playoff berth
since 2003.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants earned at least a
tie for the NL West title by sweeping a three-game set from
Arizona, 4-1. Pablo Sandoval hit a splash shot into McCovey Cove,
and Andres Torres and Buster Posey also connected for the G-men.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Brad Snyder's RBI single off Heath Bell in the
ninth inning gave the Chicago Cubs a 1-0 win over San Diego,
pushing the Padres to the cusp of elimination from the playoff
race. The loss reduced San Francisco's magic number for clinching
the NL West to one and Atlanta's magic number for clinching the NL
wild card to two.

NEWPORT, Wales (AP) - Tiger Woods is paired with Steve Stricker
for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in one of the four team matches in the
morning play on the first day of Ryder Cup play at Celtic

(KEHL'-tihk) Manor. The Woods-Stricker team went 4-and-0 at the
Presidents Cup last year and U.S. coach Corey Pavin (PAY'-vihn) is
hoping some of that momentum carries over as the Americans open
their Ryder Cup defense.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton will
return to the lineup tonight for the AL West champions after being
out since Sept. 4 with two broken ribs. Rangers outfielder David
Murphy will be held out until the playoffs with a strained left
groin.
