SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants' season has come
down to this: If they beat San Diego once in their three-game
season-ending series with Matt Cain starting tonight at AT&T Park,
the Giants clinch their first division title and playoff berth
since 2003.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants earned at least a
tie for the NL West title by sweeping a three-game set from
Arizona, 4-1. Pablo Sandoval hit a splash shot into McCovey Cove,
and Andres Torres and Buster Posey also connected for the G-men.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Brad Snyder's RBI single off Heath Bell in the
ninth inning gave the Chicago Cubs a 1-0 win over San Diego,
pushing the Padres to the cusp of elimination from the playoff
race. The loss reduced San Francisco's magic number for clinching
the NL West to one and Atlanta's magic number for clinching the NL
wild card to two.
NEWPORT, Wales (AP) - Tiger Woods is paired with Steve Stricker
for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in one of the four team matches in the
morning play on the first day of Ryder Cup play at Celtic
(KEHL'-tihk) Manor. The Woods-Stricker team went 4-and-0 at the
Presidents Cup last year and U.S. coach Corey Pavin (PAY'-vihn) is
hoping some of that momentum carries over as the Americans open
their Ryder Cup defense.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton will
return to the lineup tonight for the AL West champions after being
out since Sept. 4 with two broken ribs. Rangers outfielder David
Murphy will be held out until the playoffs with a strained left
groin.
