SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants used a six-run
fifth inning to knock out Texas ace Cliff Lee in their 11-7 victory
over the Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series last night. Tonight
it's Matt Cain for the Giants against C.J. Wilson for the Rangers.
DENVER (AP) - Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points, Arron Afflalo
added 22 and the Denver Nuggets opened the season with a 110-88 win
over the Utah Jazz in coach George Karl's return to the bench. Karl
missed the final two months of last season after being diagnosed
with throat and neck cancer.
CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James' former team has already done
something his new, super team in sunny Miami couldn't: Beat Boston.
Playing its first game in seven years without James, the Cleveland
Cavaliers stunned the Celtics 95-87 in their season opener last
night behind J.J. Hickson's 21 points.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Miami built an early 26-point lead but then
found itself in a ballgame before pulling out a 97-87 win over
Philadelphia for the first victory in the LeBron James, Dwayne Wade
and Chris Bosh era. Wade scored 30 and James scored 16 on
five-of-12 shooting.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Brett Favre (farv) is not ruling
himself out of Sunday's game at New England despite two fractures
in his left ankle. The 41-year-old Favre, who has 291 consecutive
starts, probably won't practice until at least Friday but says he
has always had a "knack" for healing quickly.
