PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The National League Championship Series is
heading back to San Francisco tied at a game apiece following the
Philadelphia Phillies' 6-1 win over the Giants. Winning pitcher Roy
Oswalt (OHZ'-wahlt) held the Giants to a run and three hits while
striking out nine in eight innings. Jimmy Rollins opened and closed
the scoring, working out a bases-loaded walk in the first and
hitting a three-run double in the seventh.
UNDATED (AP) - Oregon has grabbed the top spot in the latest
Associated Press football poll, but the Ducks are second to
Oklahoma in the first BCS standings of the season. Boise State is
second in the AP poll, followed by Oklahoma, TCU and Auburn. Boise
is third in the BCS.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas says star quarterback Ryan
Mallett suffered a concussion during Saturday's loss at Auburn. The
university released a statement from a team athletic trainer that
says Mallett's symptoms are improving, and he will continue to be
evaluated. Mallett has passed for 1,844 yards and 14 touchdowns
this season.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota has fired football coach Tim
Brewster and named offensive coordinator Jeff Horton as interim
coach for the remainder of the season. The move was made after the
Gophers suffered their sixth straight loss, 28-17 to Purdue.
Brewster went 15-30 in 3 1/2 seasons at Minnesota, including a 6-21
record in the Big Ten.
UNDATED (AP) - Rocco Mediate closed with a 2-over 73 that was
good enough for a one-stroke win over Bo Van Pelt and Alex Prugh in
the PGA's Frys.com Open in California. Mediate was 15-under in
earning $900,000. And Beatriz Recari has picked up her first LPGA
victory in the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge in California with a
14-under total, one shot ahead of Gwladys Nocera (GLAD'-ihs
noh-SEHR'-uh).
