CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Paul Silas has been named interim head
coach of the Charlotte Bobcats following Larry Brown's departure on
Wednesday. The Bobcats are 9-19 this season, losing three of their
last six games by at least 31 points. Owner Michael Jordan says
Brown agreed to step down, just a few months after leading the
Bobcats to their first playoff berth.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner
Cam Newton has been named the AP Player of the Year after leading
the Tigers to a perfect regular-season record and a berth in the
BCS title game. Newton already had won the Davey O'Brien and
Maxwell awards before receiving 51 votes from the 60-member AP
football poll panel. Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore finished
second with just three votes.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Colts receiver Austin Collie is done for the
season after he suffered a concussion in Sunday's win against
Jacksonville. Collie leads all Indy receivers with eight touchdown
catches and is second on the team with 58 receptions despite
missing five games and more than a half in three others.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets coach Rex Ryan says it's
a "personal matter," and declined to talk yesterday about a
"foot-fetish" report posted by the sports website Deadspin that
shows four videos of a woman who bears a close resemblance to
Ryan's wife. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a brief
statement that he and owner Woody Johnson met with Ryan and the
coach has their "full support." Asked if the NFL might look into
the report, spokesman Greg Aiello said the league also considered
it a personal matter.
GAINESVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Steve Addazio (ah-DA'-zee-oh) is the
new head football coach at Temple after spending the last six years
on Urban Meyer's staff at Florida. Addazio handled the Gators'
play-calling the last two years and replaces Al Golden, who left
the Owls to take over Miami's program.
