STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - The longest winning streak in college
basketball history ended last night at Stanford's Maples Pavilion.
Jeanette Pohlen poured in a career-high 31 points and ninth-ranked
Stanford ended the top-ranked Connecticut women's team's 90-game
win streak, 71-59.
DALLAS (AP) - Tim Duncan bounced back from one of the least
productive games of his career to score 17 points and reserve Gary
Neal had 21 in the San Antonio Spurs' 99-93 victory over the Dallas
Mavericks in a showdown between the top two teams in the Western
Conference. Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT'-skee) missed his second
straight game because of a sprained knee ligament, and the
Mavericks have lost both.
UNDATED (AP) - Two NBA All-Stars are going to miss significant
time in the New Year due to injuries. Celtics star Kevin Garnett
could be out two weeks with a strained right calf and Portland
All-Star guard Brandon Roy is out indefinitely with sore knees.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets are paying for their
sideline shenanigans. The team was fined $100,000 by the NFL for
violating league rules when assistant coach Sal Alosi ordered
players to form a sideline wall, then tripped Miami's Nolan Carroll
during a punt return earlier this month.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Casey Barth kicked a 23-yard field goal
in the second overtime to send North Carolina past Tennessee 30-27
in a Music City Bowl that will be remembered much more for the
crazy finish of regulation last night. After first ruling the game
over, the Big Ten officiating crew put one second back on the clock
and that allowed Barth to kick a 39-yard field goal at the end of
regulation to force overtime and give North Carolina a second
chance.
