UNDATED (AP) - The BCS made its bowl selections yesterday and
put Auburn and Oregon in the championship game on January 10 at
Glendale, Arizona. The 12-0 Ducks will play for a national title
for the first time, while the 13-0 Tigers seek their first
championship since 1957. In the other BCS bowls, Arkansas and Ohio
State will play in the Sugar Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl will have
Oklahoma against Connecticut, and Stanford has a meeting with
Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
UNDATED (AP) - Auburn rode its overwhelming win in the
Southeastern Conference championship game to its first No. 1
ranking in The Associated Press college football poll since 1985.
The Tigers jumped Oregon, which had been on top the last seven
weeks. TCU remains third and is followed by Wisconsin, Stanford,
Ohio State, Michigan State, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Boise State.
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox are scheduled to hold a news
conference today amid reports that Adrian Gonzalez is joining the
team. Two people with knowledge of the negotiations told The
Associated Press yesterday that the Red Sox were on the verge of
acquiring the All-Star first baseman from the San Diego Padres for
prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - The Washington Nationals have
worked out a seven-year, $126 million package with free-agent
outfielder Jayson Werth, who hit .296 with 27 homers, 85 RBI and a
league-high 46 doubles for Philadelphia. Werth moves from the team
that has won four straight NL East titles to one that finished last
this year at 69-93 and hasn't had a winning record since 2003.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) - Tiger Woods has capped his winless
season by blowing a four-shot lead in the final round of the
Chevron World Challenge. U.S. Open champ Graeme McDowell put
together the greatest fourth-round comeback ever against Woods,
sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the
tournament after holing a 20-foot birdie try on the final hole of
regulation to force the playoff. Woods had never lost a tournament
as a pro when leading by at least three shots going into the final
round.
