KWBG Sports for May 17th

UNDATED (AP) - NFL owners and players plan to continue mediation
today after the league won another court battle. The 8th U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals has decided the player lockout should stay
in place until a full appeal is heard on whether it is legal, a
ruling that will continue the work stoppage until at least the
first week of June and possibly much longer. Yesterday's decision
came as owners and players resumed court-ordered mediation behind
closed doors for eight hours.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa
returned to the team yesterday after missing a six-game road trip
to be treated for shingles. The Cardinals were 2-4 during La
Russa's absence and were swept in a three-game weekend series at
Cincinnati.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt
(OHZ'-wahlt) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and
is scheduled to start tonight against the Cardinals. Oswalt opened
the season 3-1 with a 3.33 ERA in five starts before being
sidelined with lower back inflammation.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Tiger Woods expects to play in
the U.S Open despite having to withdraw from last week's Players
Championship after nine holes because of a leg injury. Woods
described the soreness as a chain reaction of pain from his left
knee to the left Achilles and tightening in his calf. He said on
his website yesterday that he irritated the knee and Achilles
without making them worse.

ELKTON, Md. (AP) - The trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Animal
Kingdom is strongly considering shipping his horse to Pimlico Race
Course on Saturday, hours before the running of the Preakness.
After watching the horse work out Monday morning, trainer Graham
Motion said he was "leaning toward" staying put until the day of
the Preakness. Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby at odds of
20-1.
