PHOENIX (AP) - Kelly Johnson homered twice and the first-place
Arizona Diamondbacks won their seventh straight, a 15-4 rout of the
Florida Marlins last night. Johnson, with a double and triple, tied
a D-Backs club record with four extra-base hits.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - On the same day coach Jim Tressel resigned
in the wake of an NCAA investigation, The Columbus Dispatch
reported the NCAA and Ohio State are looking into whether star
quarterback Terrelle (tur-REHL') Pryor received cars and other
extra benefits. Pryor, who will be a senior this fall, and four
other players have been suspended for the first five games this
fall for accepting improper benefits from a local tattoo-shop
owner.
MIAMI (AP) - The NBA Finals tips off tonight with the Miami Heat
hosting the Dallas Mavericks in the opener. The Mavericks are
hoping to turn the tables on the Heat, which beat Dallas in six
games in the 2006 NBA championship.
ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Thrashers' move to north of the
border could be complete this week, possibly as early as today. The
Thrashers' owners are in negotiations with True North Sports and
Entertainment, which would relocate the team to Winnipeg.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former L.A. Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda is
recovering from a bacterial infection that caused the 83-year-old
to be hospitalized. A Dodgers spokesman says Lasorda is resting at
home after a four-day stay in the hospital last week.
