STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - The longest winning streak in college
basketball history ended last night at Stanford's Maples Pavilion.
Jeanette Pohlen poured in a career-high 31 points and ninth-ranked
Stanford ended the top-ranked Connecticut women's team's 90-game
win streak, 71-59.
DALLAS (AP) - Tim Duncan bounced back from one of the least
productive games of his career to score 17 points and reserve Gary
Neal had 21 in the San Antonio Spurs' 99-93 victory over the Dallas
Mavericks in a showdown between the top two teams in the Western
Conference. Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT'-skee) missed his second
straight game because of a sprained knee ligament, and the
Mavericks have lost both.
UNDATED (AP) - Two NBA All-Stars are going to miss significant
time in the New Year due to injuries. Celtics star Kevin Garnett
could be out two weeks with a strained right calf and Portland
All-Star guard Brandon Roy is out indefinitely with sore knees.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets are paying for their
sideline shenanigans. The team was fined $100,000 by the NFL for
violating league rules when assistant coach Sal Alosi ordered
players to form a sideline wall, then tripped Miami's Nolan Carroll
during a punt return earlier this month.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Casey Barth kicked a 23-yard field goal
in the second overtime to send North Carolina past Tennessee 30-27
in a Music City Bowl that will be remembered much more for the
crazy finish of regulation last night. After first ruling the game
over, the Big Ten officiating crew put one second back on the clock
and that allowed Barth to kick a 39-yard field goal at the end of
regulation to force overtime and give North Carolina a second
chance.

ATLANTA (AP) - Drew Brees shook off two fourth-quarter
interceptions and threw a 6-yard TD pass to Jimmy Graham with 3:24
left that gave New Orleans a 17-14 victory over the Atlanta
Falcons. That clinched a playoff berth for the defending Super Bowl
champion Saints and kept Atlanta from clinching home-field
advantage through the playoffs.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles and Vikings are playing tonight
in a game that was postponed from Sunday because of heavy snow in
Philadelphia over the weekend. The extra two days probably won't
help 41-year-old Brett Favre (fahrv), who is doubtful because of
after-effects of a concussion sustained a week ago.
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Air Force put the cap on a successful 9-4
season with a 14-7 victory over Georgia Tech in the Independence
Bowl. Air Force's Tim Jefferson completed 11 of 23 passes for 117
yards and Zack Bell booted field goals that came from 41 and 42
yards for the Falcons.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ashton Gibbs scored 21 points as Pittsburgh's
balance overcame Kemba Walker's one-man offense for No. 4
Connecticut, and the sixth-ranked Panthers easily won the Big
East's first matchup of Top 10 teams by 78-63. That drops UConn to
10-1.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The weather is becoming a worry for the Winter

forecast for Saturday's Capitals-Penguins outdoor game Saturday at
Heinz Field, hardly the conditions the NHL wants for its midseason
showcase featuring stars Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lihs-bur-gur) threw
a 43-yard TD pass and scored on a quarterback sneak as the
Pittsburgh Steelers inched closer to another division title and a
first-round playoff bye by trouncing the Carolina Panthers 27-3.
The 11-4 Steelers will wrap up the AFC North and the bye if it
beats Cleveland on Jan. 2 or if the Baltimore Ravens lose one more
game.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Freshman Ronnie Hillman scored four touchdowns
and tied his career best with 228 yards rushing on 28 carries to
lead San Diego State to its first bowl victory since 1969, with a
35-14 win over Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl in soggy San Diego. The
game was played on a slick field after 1.5 million gallons of
rainwater were pumped out of Qualcomm Stadium following heavy rains
in Southern California.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Sidney Crosby extended his points streak to 23
games with a goal and an assist and Pascal Dupuis (paz-KAHL'
doo-PWEE') scored the decisive goal in the seventh round of a
shootout to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over
Washington. Crosby, the NHL's leading scorer, has 60 points on 29
goals and 31 assists in 36 games.
NEWARK (AP) - The disappointing New Jersey Devils fired rookie
coach John MacLean (mak-LAYN'), bringing back Jacques Lemaire
(zhahk leh-MEHR') to replace him behind the bench, but it hardly
made any difference on the ice. Josh Bailey had two goals and an
assist and the New York Islanders spoiled Lemaire's return with a
5-1 victory over the Devils last night.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The San Antonio Spurs' 10-game winning
streak is history. Dwight Howard also had 29 points and 14 rebounds
in another dominant performance for Orlando, which shot 59 percent
from the floor in beating the Spurs 123-101 last night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Paul Silas has been named interim head
coach of the Charlotte Bobcats following Larry Brown's departure on
Wednesday. The Bobcats are 9-19 this season, losing three of their

Brown agreed to step down, just a few months after leading the
Bobcats to their first playoff berth.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner
Cam Newton has been named the AP Player of the Year after leading
the Tigers to a perfect regular-season record and a berth in the

Maxwell awards before receiving 51 votes from the 60-member AP
football poll panel. Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore finished
second with just three votes.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Colts receiver Austin Collie is done for the
season after he suffered a concussion in Sunday's win against
Jacksonville. Collie leads all Indy receivers with eight touchdown
catches and is second on the team with 58 receptions despite
missing five games and more than a half in three others.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets coach Rex Ryan says it's
a "personal matter," and declined to talk yesterday about a
"foot-fetish" report posted by the sports website Deadspin that
shows four videos of a woman who bears a close resemblance to
Ryan's wife. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a brief
statement that he and owner Woody Johnson met with Ryan and the
coach has their "full support." Asked if the NFL might look into
the report, spokesman Greg Aiello said the league also considered
it a personal matter.
GAINESVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Steve Addazio (ah-DA'-zee-oh) is the

gave former Baltimore setup man Matt Albers a one-year pact worth
$875,000.
CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs are bringing back Kerry Wood,
giving him a one-year, $1.5 million package. Wood began last season
with Cleveland before heading to the New York Yankees, where he was
2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 24 appearances. He pitched for the Cubs from
1998-08, striking out 20 in his fifth major league start and
winning the NL Rookie of the Year before injuries turned him into a

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt
Cassel (KAS'-uhl) was limited in practice yesterday and his
availability for Sunday's game at St. Louis remains unclear. Cassel
underwent an emergency appendectomy Dec. 8 and missed last week's
31-10 loss at San Diego that trimmed Kansas City's lead over the
Chargers to one game in the AFC West.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Michael Haywood is the new football coach at

before they took their new jobs. Haywood replaces Dave Wannstedt,
who resigned under pressure this month following a 7-5 season.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia athletic director Oliver

Vikings from New England. He may be able to help the Titans as
receiver Kenny Britt hurt his right hamstring last weekend.
